    Highland Park ended the postseason dreams of Buffalo Grove with a 2-1 victory Tuesday afternoon in the Class 3A Palatine boys soccer sectional semifinals. The Giants earned a spot in Friday’s sectional championship against No. 3 seed Fremd (17-5-1), which edged Libertyville 1-0 in the second match of the day at Chic Anderson Stadium. Tony Barrios’ 54th-minute PK conversion capped a strong second-half opening by the No. 13 seed Giants (13-6-4) and made the difference in ending the season for the 14th-seeded Bison (11-11-2).

    Rolling Meadows 3, West Chicago 0: The Mustangs extended their postseason surge by shutting down the Wildcats in Class 3A sectional semifinal play Tuesday hosted by Bartlett. Rolling Meadows advances to meet No. 2 seed Lake Park in an 11:30 a.m. Saturday sectional championship matchup. The Lancers stayed alive by eliminating the top-seeded team, Glenbard West, 2-0 in Tuesday’s second matchup at Bartlett. Evanston 2, Leyden 1, OT: The firth-seeded Eagles took the top seeded Wildkits to extra time before falling short in Niles North sectional semifinal play.

    Prospect senior Lucas Karz has already thought about his first winter in college. “I won’t need to shovel the driveway in the winter,” he said with a smile. Instead, he will probably be gripping a baseball bat during those months. That’s because Karz, thanks to his baseball skills, will be attending Presbyterian College in South Carolina.

    Saturday’s announcement of the IHSA football playoff pairings left four area teams elated, two dejected. Everyone wearing St. Edward green and gold sported a broad smile at Danny’s on Douglas, a pizzeria in downtown Elgin where approximately 100 members of the St. Edward football community gathered in front of a big screen to find out which opponent the Green Wave would draw in the wake of a 9-0 regular season.
