  • Larkin legs out win over Marian Central Dec 23, 2014 10:29 PM
One of the decisions Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter pondered prior to the Royals’ 85-73 win at the Hinkle Holiday Classic Tuesday was to figure out whether or not to allow Marian Central’s dynamic guard Adam Pischke to go off in the scoring column and clamp down on every other Hurricane in the process.

There was no slowing Barrington at Jacobs on Tuesday, where the Broncos rolled past Johnsburg 62-39 to improve to 3-0 in the tournament. Barrington will meet Zion-Benton in Friday’s 6 p.m. game., with third-place and championship action on Saturday night.

  • Hampshire falls to Moline Dec 23, 2014 10:49 PM
Coach Bob Barnett ticked off the reasons Hampshire lost to Moline. “Twenty-one turnovers, 3-for-10 free throws,” he recounted. “We had 13 turnovers in the first half. And I believe they had 9 offensive rebounds to go along with 13 turnovers.” For all that, the Whip-Purs found themselves just 5 points down in the waning moments. They whittled away at an 18-point second-half deficit, but it was too little, too late, and the Maroons hung on for a 54-49 win at the Chuck Dayton tournament in DeKalb.

  • Jacobs blows past Grant to set up semifinal vs. Larkin Dec 23, 2014 10:54 PM
Jacobs senior guard Mike Canady epitomizes his belief that he has never played on a basketball team this unselfish. Canady knew he was on borrowed time as a starter until Northern Michigan-bound Kenton Mack returned from a knee injury. Now Canady is making the most of his time off the bench such as Tuesday night when he scored 11 points to help the Golden Eagles finish 3-0 in pool play with a 69-23 victory over Grant in the Hinkle Holiday Classic in Algonquin.

  • Huntley hangs tough, stops Prairie Ridge Dec 23, 2014 11:25 PM
Had it not been for a defensive stop on the game’s final play where freshman Jadrian Flores knocked the ball loose from Prairie Ridge’s Logan Card inside the top of the arc as time expired, Huntley’s 32-30 win over Prairie Ridge could have turned into complete and utter disarray. The Red Raiders (2-7), who rounded out pool play 1-2 at the Hinkle Holiday Classic Tuesday for the team’s second win of the season, virtually held the Wolves (4-6) without a field goal (0-for-15) in the first half until PR’s Andrew Eschweiler, who had checked in with a minute to go in the second quarter, launched a circus heave that from half-court that banked off the glass as time expired, giving Huntley a 21-4 advantage and PR its first made basket.

  • Stingy Naperville Central handles Deerfield Dec 23, 2014 11:34 PM

  • Mooney, Notre Dame subdue Prospect Dec 23, 2014 10:27 PM
When Notre Dame basketball coach Tom Les played for the Dons, he was known as a hard-nosed defensive player. To this day, he still preaches defense and is quick to take a player to task — even when it’s a top offensive player. The Dons had just watched a 32-22 lead shrink to 32-30 in a 1:30 span as Prospect guard Frankie Mack scored 8 straight of his 10 points in that run. Les called time out with :59 left in the quarter and made sure Joe Mooney got the message. Mooney responded after the time out with a steal and basket to put the 9-1 Dons back on track. Mooney scored 36 points as Notre Dame got past stubborn Prospect 49-42 at Wheeling’s 37th annual Hardwood Classic. Notre Dame moves into Friday’s semifinal against Naperville Central, while Prospect goes to the winner’s consolation bracket against Deerfield.
