  • St. Francis can’t stay with Love, Nazareth Nov 23, 2014 2:13 AM
Love may not have been in the air during Saturday’s penalty-plagued Class 6A semifinal between St. Francis and Nazareth, but Love certainly found the end zone. Nazareth's Julian Love scored on 29- and 27-yard catches, a 22-yard interception return and a 93-yard kickoff return as No. 1 seed Nazareth ended No. 6 St. Francis’ magical season 56-28 in LaGrange Park.

  • Cary-Grove makes it clear — they aren’t done yet Nov 24, 2014 5:55 AM
Had Libertyville’s football players been told prior to the postseason they would win 3 playoff games before bowing out with a 9-4 record, they probably would have been OK with that scenario. Heck, most teams statewide would be OK with making a state semifinal appearance. Not Cary-Grove. Not this year.

  • Loud and proud, Cary-Grove’s headed downstate Nov 23, 2014 2:11 AM
His voice cracking and lungs stretching to capacity, Michael Gomez flailed his big arms as he delivered an intense postgame speech to his fired-up Cary-Grove football teammates on Libertyville’s turf. Top that, Brad Seaburg. “There’s not much more I can say after that,” Cary-Grove’s coach joked, as his players roared. Cary-Grove spoke amply with its play on the field during Saturday’s Class 7A state semifinal, dominating the No. 11 seed 41-7 to earn its third state final appearance in six years. The Trojans last went to state two years ago. Gomez started at guard as a sophomore on that 2012 team.

  • ‘So close’ goes Stevenson’s way Nov 22, 2014 10:04 PM
When the football hit Jimmy Marchese in the hands, he quickly pulled it to his body and gently went to the ground. Marchese risked nothing to make sure “so close” finally went Stevenson’s way. The senior linebacker’s interception in the end zone with under five seconds to play sealed the Patriots’ 7-3 victory over Glenbard West in Saturday’s Class 8A semifinals in Glen Ellyn, a win that sends Stevenson to the state title game for the second time overall and for the first time since 2002.

  • Winning’s a blast for bright-minded Bazsali Nov 21, 2014 8:16 PM
It turned out Bruce Bazsali still has the drive and enthusiasm he’s possessed since he started high school coaching in 1967. Winning a total of 3 games in his first two years at Rockford Lutheran was progress for a program that had a combined 6 victories in the seven seasons before he took over. Now Bazsali has seen the payoff in a 31-5 record the last three years. It includes a trip to the Class 4A semifinals last season and a perfect season that came to a heartbreaking end in a 1-point quarterfinal loss to Phillips last Saturday.

  • Football: Scouting Cary-Grove at Libertyville Nov 21, 2014 4:49 PM
Head football coaches Mike Jones and Brad Seaburg were still assistants and this year’s seniors were 8-years-old when Libertyville and Cary-Grove last met. The Wildcats prevailed 13-3 on a wet, blustery Champaign evening to win the 2004 Class 7A state championship game at Memorial Stadium. The teams meet again 10 years later in a 7A semifinal on Saturday at 3 p.m. as host Libertyville (9-3) seeks its first berth in a championship game since 2004 against Cary-Grove (12-0), which is vying for its third title-game appearance in six seasons and fourth overall.
