Blair hit a pair of free throws with 39 seconds for the final go-ahead points.

  • Carmel surprises Bartlett Dec 23, 2014 7:20 PM
Carmel’s boys basketball team did not at all resemble a team that had just 3 wins and 6 losses coming into Tuesday’s action at the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs. St. Francis Jason Sullivan has a short basketball memory, by design. He didn’t care that last year Northridge Prep handled the Spartans at the Glenbard West Holiday Classic. “We don’t really like to look at the past,” said the senior guard, “we look at the future and what our next school ahead of us is, so our mentality was the next game, attack it.”

The Cadets were ready for Eisenhower’s ultra-quick pace and five-man lineup changes every 90 seconds. Marmion capitalized with one easy shot after another, shooting 58 percent from the field in a 72-66 win in the first round of the 87th annual Chuck Dayton tournament in DeKalb.

  • Stevenson motors past New Trier Dec 22, 2014 10:32 PM
The pressure that Stevenson’s boys basketball team faced as the top seed and the defending champion of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament is nothing compared to the obstacle the Patriots have seen a couple of times already this season: brutal rush-hour traffic. “I don’t know what it is, but we have had that happen twice now,” Patriots coach Pat Ambrose said. The first incident came at the Thanksgiving tournament at Lyons Township, when the Patriots arrived after the scheduled tip. The latest came Monday night, but the rush-hour traffic was about the only thing that slowed the Patriots down in their opening-round contest at the 54th edition of this tournament. Stevenson raced out to a 26-7 lead after one quarter and a 52-16 advantage at the half en route to an 86-33 win over New Trier.
