Libertyville slams St. Charles East Jun 7, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Charles East respected Libertyville junior catcher Evan Skoug enough to walk him intentionally in his second at-bat Friday at the Class 4A state semifinals at Silver Cross Field in Joliet. Later in the game, the Saints didn't have that option, and Skoug made them pay as the Wildcats earned a 9-6 victory.

St. Francis tackles tall task vs. Grayslake Central Jun 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Playing small ball was St. Francis’s answer to the big problems Grayslake Central starter Jack Spicer presented, not the least of which was his intimidating 6-foot-6 frame. The Spartans pulled Spicer off the mound with a couple of bunts that would have been tough for any big pitcher to get to in Friday's Class 3A state semifinals. Tim Zettinger’s textbook bunt with one out set up a suicide squeeze that scored 2 runs in the fourth inning, and that wound up being a game-changer for St. Francis in a 6-3 victory over Grayslake Central.

Schulewitz sure delivered for Mundelein Jun 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Mitch Schulewitz, a powerful sidearm pitcher, cruised to a 10-1 record this spring and carried Mundelein to its second of back-to-back North Suburban Conference championships. He was 8-0 in league games and pitched shutouts in seven of them. The only run he allowed in NSC play was to Wauconda last month in the league title game, a 5-1 Mundelein win. His eye-popping domination of every team in the NSC Lake Division pushed Schulewitz to the top of the list of candidates for captain of the Daily Herald’s Lake County all-area baseball team.

Libertyville savors Final Four run Jun 6, 2013 12:00 AM
When a road leading to the state Final Four got bumpy, Libertyville navigated it with a Blazer. Despite losing two-time all-American Kevin Verkler and fellow starting defender Graham Crawford due to late-season injuries, the Wildcats’ boys lacrosse team trucked within a victory of the Class-A state championship game. After beating Glenbrook North to earn its Final Four berth, Libertyville saw its season end last Thursday with an 11-4 loss to eventual state champion Loyola. Wildcats junior goalie Cole Blazer showed throughout the season why he along with teammates Verkler and A.J. Schmidt netted All-America honors. The trio led Libertyville to a 16-6 record (15-5 in state) and its first Final Four berth since 2004, when the Wildcats finished second.
