Defense was the name of the game as Prairie Ridge and Burlington Central battled in the semifinals of the Class 2A Belvidere girls soccer sectional Tuesday night. Both backlines and both goalkeepers put on an exhibition, but the Wolves were able to find the back of the net late in the first half and held on for a 1-0 victory at Funderburg Stadium.

That was the scenario as Cary-Grove posted a crucial 3-0 win over Prairie Ridge in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division softball action in Crystal Lake Monday afternoon. Both teams are now 5-1 in conference action.

Huntley entered Saturdays Fox Valley Conference Valley Division baseball matchup at Prairie Ridge with an offensive theme of scoring early and often. The Red Raiders accomplished that by scoring 3 runs in the first two innings. But those were only runs Huntley could muster against Prairie Ridge senior pitcher Lucas Keller, who blanked the Red Raiders during the final five innings. The end result was a come-from-behind 5-3 win by PR.

Dee Beaubien, widow of late Republican state Rep. Mark Beaubien of Barrington Hills, will announce her intention Monday to run as an independent in the 52nd District state representative race against Republican nominee David McSweeney of Barrington Hills. The announcement is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Jewel Tea Pavilion in Citizens Park, 511 Lake Zurich Road in Barrington.

No, Kirsten Stevens didnt drive the bus home from Algonquin to Crystal Lake. The Prairie Ridge junior pitcher did enough with her arm and bat. Retiring the final 12 hitters she faced, Stevens struck out 12 without allowing a walk in 7 innings of work. The hard throwing left-hander limited Jacobs to 1 run on 5 hits. Stevens also wielded a hot bat with a 2-run homer and a 3-run double in leading the Wolves to a convincing 8-1 win over Jacobs in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division softball action in Algonquin Wednesday afternoon.

McHenry-area stable fire ruled accidental; all horses accounted for Apr 13, 2012 12:00 AM
Investigators have a few theories but can only speculate what caused the stable fire that killed 18 horses Wednesday evening near McHenry, leading officials to rule the blaze accidental and of undetermined origin. Officials are also certain that all horses have been found and accounted for.

Danielle Rowe said she responded sincerely, and what she thought to be truthfully, when she disclosed an 11-year-old arrest on her Daily Herald candidate questionnaire. The 52nd House District GOP candidate wrote that she slapped her sister during a heated argument, but that charges were dropped. But court records show she received one-year supervision and a $342 fine for misdemeanor battery.

Realizing that Sean Valentine is capable of scoring more than 20 points in any game, Cary-Grove boys basketball coach Ralph Schueltze wanted to make sure the Prairie Ridge senior didn’t single-handedly beat the Trojans. Using a solid team defense, Cary-Grove held Valentine to only 12 points and 1 3-pointer as the fourth-seeded Trojans knocked off the fifth-seeded Wolves 49-42 in first round action of the Class 4A Cary-Grove regional Monday night.
