Prairie Ridge denies Cary-Grove FVC Valley crown May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Lauren Stanley deserved better. Allowing only an unearned run in the sixth inning, Stanley was the hard-luck loser as Cary-Grove dropped a gut-wrenching 1-0 decision to Prairie Ridge in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division softball action in Crystal Lake Monday afternoon. The victory gave the Wolves the outright Valley championship with a 10-2 record. The Trojans end league play with a 9-3 slate.

Perfect game for Prairie Ridge’s Stevens vs. Huntley Apr 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Strikeout, strikeout, strikeout. Out, out, out You get the picture. The Huntley hitters never had a chance against Prairie Ridge senior standout Kirsten Stevens. Retiring all 21 hitters she faced, Stevens twirled a masterful perfect game while striking out 13 Red Raiders as the Wolves eked out a 1-0 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win in Huntley Monday afternoon. The game was played in a snappy 1 hour and 7 minutes.

Scary moment in Cary-Grove’s win over Prairie Ridge Apr 22, 2013 12:00 AM
There's really only one word to describe the moment. Scary. Cary-Grove defeated Prairie Ridge 3-1 Monday afternoon in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division softball game in Cary. But when an 0-1 pitch in the top of the fourth inning from Cary-Grove senior standout Lindsay Efflandt came off the bat of Prairie Ridge senior Kirsten Stevens, Efflandt's good friend and summer teammate, and hit Efflandt flush in the face, the emotions of the game between the District 155 rivals changed immediately.

Huntley, McHenry graciously share county crown Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Huntley and McHenry were well suited to split the 2013 McHenry County Boys Track and Field Meet title in Cary Saturday. “It’s great that we tied,” Huntley relay anchor Mike Dollar said. “We both competed really hard. I have a lot of buddies on McHenry and I have since middle school.” Once the meet concluded athletes from both programs posed together with the trophy. Even the chummy coaches seemed satisfied with the split decision of a meet delayed two days by bad weather, though both expressed some surprise at the outcome.

Cary-Grove girls make it 5 straight county titles Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Cary-Grove’s drive for five didn’t come easy. The Trojans edged Huntley by 7 points to win their fifth consecutive McHenry County Girls Track and Field Meet on a crisp Saturday in Cary, and they did so by navigating potholes. Sophomore Morgan Schulz tweaked an ankle in warm-ups and had to pull out of the 800-meter relay, which finished second only to Huntley. The Trojans relinquished points in the day’s second race when the 400-meter relay team dropped the baton and finished sixth.

Prairie Ridge hands No. 1 Huntley 1st loss Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Huntley’s baseball team produced enough runs to win Saturday. But in the end, the Red Raiders’ season-opening winning streak of 13 came to an abrupt halt because of shoddy defense and pitching. Hindered by 4 errors and 8 walks combined from pitchers Bryce Only and Tommy Regan, the No. 1 Red Raiders absorbed their first loss of the season, 9-7, to Prairie Ridge in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division contest in Huntley.

Skonieczny’s 3 HRs, 8 RBI lead unbeaten Huntley Apr 19, 2013 12:00 AM
Huntley junior catcher Mark Skonieczny had a forgettable start to an unforgettable game Friday at Prairie Ridge. Teammate Jake Wagner didn’t let Skonieczny forget about it after the top-ranked Red Raiders weathered three hours in cold, windy and snowy conditions for a 16-10 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division baseball victory in Crystal Lake. “Hey Mark, remember when you struck out,” Wagner shouted amid a lot of laughter to the Illinois recruit prior to Huntley’s postgame meeting. But Skonieczny struck back emphatically with home runs in his final 3 at-bats and finished with 8 RBI as every starter in the Huntley (13-0, 6-0) lineup contributed to a 17-hit attack.

Prairie Ridge blanks Crystal Lake S. Apr 16, 2013 12:00 AM
According to Crystal Lake South softball coach Scott Busam, it's not time to panic, but it might be time to sound a wake-up alarm on his Gators. After a slew of errors committed in an 8-1 loss to McHenry on Monday, the errors were contagious again as the Gators spotted Prairie Ridge 4 runs on 4 errors on the road in a 10-0 Fox Valley Conference loss in 5 innings Tuesday in Crystal Lake.

FVC Valley race promises to be a thriller Apr 11, 2013 12:00 AM
The seven teams of the Fox Valley Conference’s Valley Division own a 51-12 combined record this spring. Next week they begin facing each other in a title chase that promises to be among the state’s fiercest. The FVC Valley is as deep as it is competitive. Not only have member schools gone 10-3 against the Mid-Suburban League and 7-1 against the North Suburban Conference, all seven boast winning records through Thursday: Huntley (9-0), Crystal Lake South (6-0), Jacobs (8-1), Cary-Grove (9-2), Dundee-Crown (4-2), Prairie Ridge (8-3) and McHenry (7-4).

St. Charles East lacks execution vs. Prairie Ridge Mar 28, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Charles East's baseball team finished with one fielding error during Thursday's nonconference game against Prairie Ridge. But the late-inning miscue proved costly as the Wolves (4-0) capitalized with a 6-run seventh — with all of the runs coming across after 2 outs — during their 7-3 victory over the Saints (1-2) in St. Charles.

Jacobs outlasts Prairie Ridge Feb 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Now that the season has reached a single-elimination format, this is where Jim Hinkle’s coaching career at Jacobs reminds you of a game of Russian Roulette. But in Monday night’s 43-25 Class 4A regional quarterfinal win over No. 6 Prairie Ridge in Algonquin, the 71-year-old Hinkle outlasted the Wolves to coach another game. And he also received another chance, for possibly the last time, to refute an ugly victory claim for the first time.

Prairie Ridge co-op won its first state trophy in girls gymnastics last season, finishing in third place. This season the Wolves are hungry for more. Lyons Township is in second with 149.05, followed by Fremd (146.0). New Trier (145.35) and Geneva (145.225) round out the top five.

Hinkle, Jacobs enjoy one last win in old gym Feb 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Jim Hinkle wanted one more special night in the cozy confines of the old main gym at Jacobs. He got it Friday night, and he’ll certainly remember it for a long time. The Golden Eagles used the energy of the near-full gym to start the game on a 22-6 run and went on to defeat Prairie Ridge, 70-48, in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action. “This was awesome,” said Hinkle, who is retiring at the end of his 17th season on the Jacobs bench. “The new gym is kind of like a trophy wife. It looks pretty, everyone likes it, says it’s beautiful. It’s got no substance. It’s got no heart. It’s got nothing this gym had. This is the good wife.”

St. Edward’s Madden ready for a fantastic finish Feb 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Something significant has been missing for St. Edward senior girls gymnast Abby Madden this season. That would be older sister, Jordyn, who was her teammate and confidant the previous three seasons. Jordyn Madden, now studying at Indiana, was a four-time state qualifier. “It was hard at the beginning this season without her,” Abby Madden says. “She came to three meets at Christmas time, which was really nice. She sends texts saying good luck. I really missed her at first. It was so hard without her, but I got used to it. I’ve been competing with her since I was 5, 6 or 7. She still cheers me on. She used to be nervous and I would calm her down. Now, she calms me down because she doesn’t freak out anymore.” Older sister certainly has plenty to be proud of this season. Madden once again finds herself in the girls gymnastics state finals this weekend at Palatine High School, where she will compete in all the individual events and the all-around competition.

Crystal Lake South tops Prairie Ridge Feb 13, 2013 12:00 AM
The Crystal Lake South girls basketball team got a taste of what could have happened if it didn’t have a knack all season for winning close games. That special capacity alone averted a major crisis at Gator Alley Wednesday night as crosstown rival Prairie Ridge did all it could to spoil the party for the Class 4A regional hosts, who refused to quit after being down as much as 17 in the first half. Third-seeded PR rallied to cut South’s lead to 2 with 1:42 remaining after Alex Neckopulos broke free on a shot fake and converted a 3-point play to the dismay of Gators coach Kyle McCaughn, who called for time as it put the rematch of last year’s regional final between South and Cary-Grove in serious jeopardy. But as South had done all season, the Gators would come through in the clutch. Lauren Del Vecchio ended South’s 8-minute field goal drought with a 3-point play of her own with 1:27 remaining, helping the second-seeded Gators escape with a 42-36 regional semifinal win over the Wolves, launching them into Friday’s title game against top-seeded Cary-Grove

Third-quarter surge lifts Dundee-Crown Feb 6, 2013 12:00 AM
It was a third quarter to remember for Dundee-Crown and a nightmarish quarter to forget for Prairie Ridge. Outscoring PR 20-3 in the third quarter, D-C rallied from a 13-point second quarter and eventually pulled out a 50-46 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball win over the host Wolves in Crystal Lake Wednesday night.

Prairie Ridge co-op had three gymnasts finish in the top five for all-around as the Wolves cruised to their second consecutive sectional title with an impressive 149.525 at Fremd High School in Palatine on Monday. Prairie Ridge became the first of four sectional winners automatically qualifying for the girls gymnastic state meet on Feb. 15 and 16 at Palatine High School.

Cary-Grove starts fast, blows out Prairie Ridge Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Rarely are games won in the first 5 minutes. This one was. Scoring the first 11 points of the game, Cary-Grove’s fast start provided the spark in the Trojans’ 53-32 win over Prairie Ridge in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action in Cary Friday night.
