  • Huntley hangs tough, stops Prairie Ridge Dec 23, 2014 11:25 PM
Had it not been for a defensive stop on the game’s final play where freshman Jadrian Flores knocked the ball loose from Prairie Ridge’s Logan Card inside the top of the arc as time expired, Huntley’s 32-30 win over Prairie Ridge could have turned into complete and utter disarray. The Red Raiders (2-7), who rounded out pool play 1-2 at the Hinkle Holiday Classic Tuesday for the team’s second win of the season, virtually held the Wolves (4-6) without a field goal (0-for-15) in the first half until PR’s Andrew Eschweiler, who had checked in with a minute to go in the second quarter, launched a circus heave that from half-court that banked off the glass as time expired, giving Huntley a 21-4 advantage and PR its first made basket.

  • Negron, Larkin topple Prairie Ridge Dec 20, 2014 8:50 PM
There was a lesson learned after the Larkin boys basketball team dropped an Upstate River matchup to St. Charles North Friday night — that sophomore Christian Negron has to be more of a focal point offensively by being aggressive and selfish. While the 6-foot-6 inch Negron carries an alternative approach, there was no doubt that Larkin benefits from that game plan after he poured in 18 points in Larkin’s 58-48 win over Prairie Ridge to open pool play of the 2014 Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs in Algonquin Saturday.

  • Girls gymnastics: D155 co-op team talented again Dec 4, 2014 1:45 PM
The Prairie Ridge District 155 co-op girls gymnastics team has enjoyed a great run of success in recent years. Prairie Ridge finished third in the state in 2012 and second in 2013 and last year. And with a talented roster of returning gymnasts that were key contributors during last year’s state run, longtime coach Lee Battaglia is confident his group will again be in the conversation come late February in Palatine (site of the state meet).

  • Larkin gets the message, tops Richmond-Burton Nov 22, 2014 6:39 PM
Larkin girls basketball coach Ruben Flores must have gotten his message across. Flores subbed all five players — including four starters — with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter Saturday afternoon, trailing Richmond-Burton 7-4. That group returned a minute later, down 10-6. The Royals outscored the Rockets by 10-4 the rest of the quarter and never trailed again in a 61-45 victory in Pool B play at the Burlington Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

  • Healthy playoff start for James, Lakes Oct 31, 2014 11:45 PM
A new season — playoff football — delivered a healthy and revitalized Izayah James. “I feel like a whole brand-new person,” said Lakes’ junior running back, whose injured hip limited him to only special-teams duties last week after he missed the Eagles’ Week 8 showdown against Antioch. “I was hungry to get in again.” On the field, Lakes’ domination was nothing new. It was the same-ol’ Eagles, as they started the Class 6A state playoffs like they ended the regular season. Led by James’ 143 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on 24 carries, host Lakes led from start to finish in a 38-14 win over No. 14 Prairie Ridge on a chilly Friday night.

  • Jacobs Van Vlierbergen makes it a FVC trifecta Oct 18, 2014 8:43 PM
Muddy, wet conditions. Didn’t matter. Annoying mist. Didn’t matter. You get the picture. Nothing was going to deter Jacobs senior standout Lauren Van Vlierbergen from capturing her third straight Fox Valley Conference individual championship. Van Vlierbergen, who finished fourth in Class 3A in 2013, posted a 3-mile time of 17:53.8 to finish first at Saturday’s Fox Valley Conference girls cross country championship at Hickory Nut Grove Park in Cary.

  • Prospect likes its downstate prospects Oct 13, 2014 9:39 PM
All the work and practices Prospect coach Jim Hamann put his girls golf team through this fall were geared toward seeing his players enjoying their best golf at the end of the season. With that in mind, the Knights sure must have made their coach proud on Tuesday at Bittersweet Golf Club in Gurnee. They produced their best team score of the season (330) in some of the toughest conditions of the fall. With many golfers still having to finish their rounds due to rainy weather suspending play late in the afternoon, all of the results of the Warren Class AA sectional are still unofficial and not yet reported to the IHSA. Coaches will be alerted early in the morning if play will resume at noon Tuesday. If conditions are still unsuitable, Wednesday would be the finishing day. Yet to finish their team scores are Barrington, Loyola, Libertyville and Crystal Lake Central.

  • Jacobs nabs FVC girls tennis crown Oct 11, 2014 9:41 PM
Patience is a virtue. Just ask Jacobs girls tennis coach Jon Betts. During Betts’ 10-year tenure as the Golden Eagles coach, Jacobs finished second in the Fox Valley Conference six times. Jacobs is no longer a bridesmaid. For the first time since 2003, the Golden Eagles are conference champs.

  • Hampshire falls to Prairie Ridge Oct 10, 2014 11:17 PM
Hampshire’s postseason starts next week. After falling to Prairie Ridge 28-20 in a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division game Friday night, it’s now win or go home for the Whip-Purs. Hampshire (3-4) must win its final 2 games at Crystal Lake Central and at home against Woodstock to have a shot at the playoffs.

  • Huntley claims 3rd FVC title in 4 years Oct 2, 2014 7:08 PM
After finishing second to Jacobs in last year’s Fox Valley Conference boys golf tournament, Huntley coach Jim Rolando was looking for his team to climb that one step higher in this year’s meet. The Red Raiders got the job done. Led by a 73 from Jake Grabner and a 75 from Trent Craig, Huntley placed first with a score of 312 at Thursday’s FVC meet hosted by McHenry and held at Oak Grove Golf Course.

  • Cary-Grove senior Luloff wins FVC crown Oct 1, 2014 7:12 PM
Cary-Grove senior Larissa Luloff admitted she put a lot of pressure on herself to win Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference girls golf tournament at Crystal Woods. “I really wanted to win individually,” Luloff said. “I put that pressure on myself and I probably shouldn’t have.” But Luloff beat the pressure, and the golf course, to shoot a 5-over par 77 and come away with the individual title that also led her Crystal Lake co-op team to the FVC team championship.

  • Must-read sequel from Booker, Grayslake North Sep 26, 2014 11:48 PM
After rushing for school-record 329 yards in a high-scoring nonconference victory the previous week, Grayslake North senior running back Titus Booker was hoping to keep the momentum going Friday night against visiting Prairie Ridge. Booker and the Knights really outdid themselves this time around, as Booker ran for 189 yards in the first quarter alone before setting another school record with 360 yards on 26 carries as Grayslake North rolled to a 47-27 Fox Valley Conference victory over the Wolves in this Fox Division contest. The Knights (3-2, 2-0) struggled defensively in their 50-43 win last week. But this time around they got both the incredible offensive performance from Booker, who ran for 5 touchdowns for the second straight week as well as some pretty solid defense against a potent Prairie Ridge ground attack. The Wolves (3-2, 2-1) fell behind 7-0 just 3:04 into the contest as junior quarterback Merrick Gentile hit Matt Aikin with a 22-yard screen pass over the middle before Kevin Meyer kicked the first of his 5 extra points. Prairie Ridge did respond to that early TD quickly, though, as junior running back Nathan Griffin broke free from the line of scrimmage and went 73 yards untouched down the left sideline for the score. The extra point by Christopher Eschweiler deadlocked the score at 7-7. Despite being overshadowed by the Indiana University-bound Booker’s performance, Griffin had a great game himself with 270 yards on 32 rushes and 3 TD’s. Booker and the Knights (619 yards of total offense) continued to dominate on offense, as Booker answered Griffin’s TD by breaking away down the left sideline for an 80-yard TD run and a 14-7 lead just after the Wolves’ had gotten on the scoreboard. Then on the last play of the first quarter, Booker put on a hesitation move before bolting 53 yards down to the Prairie Ridge 2-yard-line. Booker scored his second TD on a 2-yard run on the first play of the second quarter for a 21-7 advantage. “The kid (Booker) is a phenomenal athlete, and when we tried to grab him he just ran through everybody tonight,” said Prairie Ridge coach Chris Schremp. “They have a good quarterback too, they have a good tandem and they just took it to us. He (Booker) is a Division I athlete and you see why, there is an obvious difference and it’s speed.” Prairie Ridge hung tough in the early going as Griffin capped a 66-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard TD run to cut the lead to 21-14 with 4:11 left in the first half. But once again the Knights answered that time-consuming drive by marching 80 yards in 11 plays with Booker scoring on a 1-yard run with only 25.5 seconds left in the second quarter to give North a 27-14 halftime lead. Booker continued his magic in the third quarter as he ran left before reversing field completely and racing 44 yards down the left sideline for the TD and a 33-14 lead 2:56 into the period. Then after keeping the Knights out of the end zone on a fourth-and-goal from the 2, the Knights proceeded to march 99 yards on seven plays on their ensuing possession. Gentile (132 yards on 10 carries) got the drive rolling with a 48-yard keeper on the first play. Then Booker somehow broke through a big pack of defenders on his way to a 22-yard TD run and his fiffth TD for a 40-14 lead on the final play of the third quarter. Booker already had a school-record 333 yards at that point of the game before adding 27 more yards before being removed from the game early in the fourth quarter. “We really emphasize that we need to make holes and it was a great team effort,” said Booker, who once again credited his offensive line for another great performance. “Without them (offensive line) I can’t do the things I do, and I’m excited about the things we’re doing on offense.” Prairie Ridge sophomore Cole Brown’s 13-yard TD run made the score 40-20 with 10:18 to play before Gentile (6-for-9, 62 yards passing) added an 8-yard TD run for a 47-20 lead with 6:45 remaining. Griffin scored on a 6-yard TD run with three minutes left to account for the final score. “We knew coming in we needed to play better defensively and we really challenged them in practice,” said Grayslake North coach Steve Wood. “We held them to 14 points through three quarters and our offense just clicked.” Wood could not say enough about the play of Booker for the second straight week along with the stellar play of Gentile. “Titus was unbelievable tonight, our offensive line played great, and Merrick played great offensively too,” added Wood. “He (Booker) looks so fast with his speed right now, and last year he wasn’t healthy.”

  • Prairie Ridge wears down Dundee-Crown Sep 20, 2014 12:22 AM
Prairie Ridge took a shot on the chin Friday night and didn’t even flinch. Instead, after yielding an opening-drive touchdown to Dundee-Crown the Wolves got right up off the deck to score 41 unanswered points in a 41-7 Fox Valley Conference crossover win that spoiled the Chargers’ homecoming celebration.

  • Cary-Grove’s growth continues at Prairie Ridge Invite Sep 13, 2014 10:42 PM
Same coaches. Same building. Far different stakes. The last time girls volleyball teams coached by Barrington’s Michelle Jakubowski and Cary-Grove’s Patty Langanis met was in 2011, when Langanis’ Trojans defeated an injury weakened Huntley squad — then coached by Jakubowski — to win the Class 4A Prairie Ridge sectional title.

  • Prairie Ridge brushes aside Jacobs Sep 2, 2014 10:36 PM
It was a night Jacobs girls volleyball coach Lisa Dwyer would like to forget ever happened. Sluggish and mistake-prone throughout the entire evening, the Golden Eagles were overpowered by Prairie Ridge 25-17, 25-18 in Fox Valley Conference action in Crystal Lake Tuesday night.
