  • Orange to the rescue for Jacobs Feb 5, 2014 9:14 PM
When it came time for someone on the Jacobs boys basketball team to make a play, junior point guard Chris Orange knew it was on him to rise to the occasion. Orange thought the charge he took in overtime in the Golden Eagles’ come-from-behind 56-54 Fox Valley Conference Valley overtime win over Prairie Ridge Tuesday night in Crystal Lake was much more important than his game-tying 3-point play with 52.2 seconds remaining in regulation.

Huntley held the Wolves to just 2 free throws the rest of the game en route to a 49-35 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory.

  • George, Kirby lead Carmel victory Nov 27, 2013 9:13 PM
Carmel seniors Jack George and Billy Kirby made sure history didn’t repeat itself in a rematch with Prairie Ridge in the seventh annual Crystal Lake Central Coaches vs. Cancer Thanksgiving Tournament. On Wednesday afternoon, the Corsairs found themselves in a similar position at the CL Central Fieldhouse. This time Kirby contained Bradshaw and no one could stop the 6-foot-10 George as he had 28 points and 9 rebounds in Carmel’s 58-49 victory.

  • Housing crash pushed bigger tax load onto seniors Nov 13, 2013 9:03 AM
A property tax relief program intended to save Illinois senior citizens hundreds of dollars on their annual tax bills has had the opposite effect since property values began their steep nosedive since 2009. Because of the way the "senior freeze" is set up, the declining value of properties is actually making seniors pay more than ever before. “It's the law of unintended consequences,” said Craig Dovel, DuPage County's supervisor of assessments.

  • Prairie Ridge has Marmion’s number again Nov 9, 2013 6:27 PM
Failing to produce a first down while falling behind 14-0 at halftime, Marmion’s football team regrouped in a big way in the second half. Senior quarterback Brock Krueger’s 4-yard touchdown run with 1:57 remaining capped a 5-play, 64-yard drive that gave the Cadets (8-3) a 20-14 lead over Prairie Ridge in Saturday’s Class 6A second-round playoff clash. The Cadets’ first lead of the game was short-lived, however, as the Wolves (7-4) marched 60 yards in 4 plays to tie the game on quarterback Brett Covalt’s 28-yard TD pass to Danny Meikel with 59.2 seconds left. Junior Chris Eschweiler delivered the all-important PAT kick and the Wolves escaped with a 21-20 triumph in Crystal Lake.

  • Prairie Ridge’s option attack too much for Grayslake North Oct 18, 2013 11:55 PM
Lots of good things in life are tripled. For instance: Triplets. A triple scoop ice cream sundae. Winning the Triple Crown in baseball or horse racing. After Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference crossover clash with Prairie Ridge in Crystal Lake, the Grayslake North Knights will not add the Wolves’ triple-option offense to that list. That volcano of pressure reared its ugly head Friday and it was quite the show during and after in Huntley’s 34-7 homecoming trouncing of Fox Valley Conference Valley Division foe Prairie Ridge, which put the Red Raiders back at the .500 mark as they earned their first division win of the year.
