At cigarette probably set a wooden balcony, vinyl siding and plastic chair on fire at an apartment on the 2300 block of Colony Drive around 1:30 p.m. May 16. Damage was estimated at $600. A lit cigarette may also have caused a balcony fire at an apartment on the 1700 block of Forest Cove Drive around 11:35 p.m. May 22. Damage was estimated at $2,000.

A police officer shot and killed a pit bull that attacked him when he responded to a call for a dispute between a resident and a postal worker, police said. Arris Newsome, 22, of Elgin, was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct for not controlling her pit bull, according to police reports. A police officer responded to a call about a dispute between a postal worker and Newsome when Newsome started to argue with the officer, reports said. When she opened the door, the dog attacked the officer and the officer shot and killed it, according to reports.

Ann Thompson, 48, of the 200 block of Division Street, Elgin, was arrested and later charged with criminal trespassing Monday, according to police reports. Her bond was set at $5,000, of which she must pay 10 percent in order to be released before her court date, scheduled June 1 in Elgin.
