    Seven Mount Prospect residents received phone calls between Feb. 18 and 24 from scammers claiming to be with the IRS. The callers told the residents that they had back taxes due and needed to pay immediately or be charged and arrested. All the residents hung up without paying. The police department encourages victims to report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission website and the Treasury Inspector General For Tax Administration website www.treasury.gov/tigta.

    An Arlington Heights resident was scammed out of $999 around 9:33 a.m. Feb. 23 after he received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. The victim was told that he owned back taxes and was instructed to purchase money orders from Walmart and Jewel. The resident sent $999 at a Walmart, but when he went to Jewel, an employee realized it was a scam.
