Fox Valley could be showered in medals this weekend May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).

Burlington Central advances to regional final May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Burlington Central junior Michael Scott hasn't been used as a reliever since early on this season. But Wednesday he was forced to. He came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning with the tying run on first base. The right-hander got out of the jam with allowing only run — that coming on an error — as the top-seeded Rockets beat No. 4 Marengo, 8-4, in the semifinals of the Class 3A Hampshire baseball regional.

Prairie Ridge tops Burlington Central May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Defense was the name of the game as Prairie Ridge and Burlington Central battled in the semifinals of the Class 2A Belvidere girls soccer sectional Tuesday night. Both backlines and both goalkeepers put on an exhibition, but the Wolves were able to find the back of the net late in the first half and held on for a 1-0 victory at Funderburg Stadium.

Burlington Central comes back to beat Hampshire May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Burlington Central softball coach Cray Allen did not want his Rockets to be "that team." "I did not want to be that story that got out to all the rest of the teams by 6:30," Allen said. "We didn't want to be that team." But until the bottom of the fifth inning on Rocket Hill Tuesday, it looked like Twitter and Facebook might be lighting up with some upset news. The No. 8 Rockets righted the ship in time, though, scoring 9 runs in their final two at-bats to beat Hampshire 13-4 in one semifinal of the Class 3A Burlington Central regional.

Burlington Central wins first regional May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Camille Dela Cruz knew she let her Burlington Central girls soccer teammates down with 14:32 remaining in regulation Saturday night. The junior failed to convert a penalty kick with the Rockets tied with Crystal Lake Central, 2-2. She made up for it in the third overtime. Dela Cruz ran onto a ball over the top of the Tigers' defense from Courtney Andrew and scored the game-winner with 7:14 left in the third overtime to give the Rockets a 3-2 victory and the Class 2A Burlington Central regional championship.

Burlington Central handles DeKalb May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
No secrets were revealed on Rocket Hill Monday when the softball teams from Burlington Central and DeKalb met for Centrals Senior Day. With a potential regional championship matchup looming on the same field next week, neither BC coach Cray Allen nor DeKalb coach Jeff Davis sent their ace pitchers, Angie Morrow and Katie Kowalski respectively, to the circle for Mondays game. That mattered little to the host Rockets, whose seniors set the tone early in a 10-2 win, Centrals 25th victory of the season.
