    Two employees at a Payday Loan store were victims of an armed robbery at 11:43 a.m. Sunday at 268 S. State St., according to police reports. A man entered the store with a gun and stole the money from the cash register as well as the safe, a total of about $1,800.

    A 69-year-old Hampshire man who died Sunday when the small, single-engine aircraft he was piloting crashed upon takeoff from an airstrip west of Elgin had a passion for planes and flying. Local and federal authorities are investigating the crash, the cause of which was not immediately known.

    Sentencing is delayed until Oct. 28 for a former South Elgin man who injured a Hampshire couple while driving drunk in December 2010. Prosecutors want a judge to consider jailhouse phone conversations in which Eric Barth, 21, now of Ohio, allegedly mocked the victims in the case.

    Joshua M. Smith, 20, of the 1400 block of Blume Drive in Elgin, was charged with felony theft Wednesday, according to a police report. He is accused of taking $560 out of a cash register, plus seven items of merchandise, between 9 a. m. Aug. 1 and 10 p.m. Wednesday from Hollister, 314 Commons Drive.
