  • Opponents: Brunner, Muirhead deals will tarnish Kane forest image Feb 7, 2015 7:41 AM
A handful of local residents decried two pending deals that will introduce new uses into two Kane County forest preserves. Residents said the introduction of ComEd power lines and a for-profit organic farm will destroy the credibility of the district for any landowners contemplating selling their property to the district in hopes of it remaining pristine natural space. “The message sent to future land granters will be clear: The forest preserve cannot be trusted,” one critic said.

  • Some towers for new ComEd lines could be erected in Muirhead Springs Jan 29, 2015 8:02 PM
Some Kane County residents facing a future with new ComEd power towers running through their property may yet get a reprieve. Kane County Forest Preserve District officials worked a deal with ComEd to allow the lines to run through the Muirhead Springs preserve in trade for $319,000. The preserve would also benefit by having only five power towers in or near it instead of 17 in the current design. The catch is the ICC must agree to this late alteration in the plan. And, the owners of the Frank Lloyd Wright house would now have to see these towers instead of the nearby farmers.

  • Decision on ComEd lines through Kane Co. preserves comes down to money Feb 9, 2014 11:17 PM
Kane County Forest Preserve District commissioners are positioned to intervene on a plan that would place ComEd power lines and towers on the outskirts of two preserves. The district, though, could bend to desires of local farmers and allow lines to run through the preserves instead. But that will only happen if ComEd is willing to pay the district enough to buy one of the neighboring farms. The whole decision will come down to money.

Kane County Forest Preserve District officials are interested in haggling with ComEd over the rights to run new power lines and towers through the Muirhead preserve. In short, if ComEd comes up without enough money, commissioners may be willing to allow the lines to run along existing railroad tracks. That would make private farmers in the area happy. The lines will run through their property in the current plan.
