  • Burlington Central trips up Sycamore May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
    Burlington Central's Blake Alexander would not consider himself a stolen base threat. But he took one when it mattered the most. Tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seven, Alexander stole second and eventually scored the game-winning run against Sycamore in the championship game of the Class 3A Hampshire baseball regional Saturday.

    Few words can be used to describe Saturday's Class 3A Burlington Central regional softball championship game between the host Rockets and DeKalb. Central blew a 7-0 lead after two innings, trailed by six after the top of the fifth, led by five going into the seventh and hung on to beat the Barbs, 19-18, to win its first regional title since 2009.

    After a cameo in the round of 16 at the state tennis tournament, the Barrington team of George Coll and Varun Parekh bid farewell to its doubles opponents in the championship bracket. One round later, the Broncos standout duo fell in three sets to Bloomington's Ricky Zamudio-Nathan Cavanaugh at Buffalo Grove late Friday afternoon, ending their tournament run. The straight-set loss finished a marvelous postseason which included a Mid-Suburban League title, a second-place finish at the Schaumburg sectional and a 3-2 state tournament record following a 6-1, 4-6, 4-6 defeat to the Bloomington tandem.

    Fox Valley could be showered in medals this weekend May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
    The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).

    Charlie Vogel's terrific tennis career came to an end Thursday afternoon when the Elgin Academy star lost his second match of the day at the state tournament, but not without treating perhaps the largest, and most loyal fan group at the Hoffman Estates High School. With several members of his family and friends on hand, plus nearly a dozen special young guests courtside, Vogel would win his opener over Pranv Puri of Moline, before losing in straight-sets to 9-16 seed Scott Christian from Lake Forest.

    Lions Club International President Wing-Kun Tam recently visited the South Elgin Lions Club and helped plant a tree, part of a yearlong initiative to plant one million trees worldwide. Tam said when taking office, “many experts believe that we can reverse the strains we have placed on our planet. The challenge is getting enough people to understand they can make a difference even by doing simple things like planting a tree.”

  • Burlington Central advances to regional final May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
    Burlington Central junior Michael Scott hasn't been used as a reliever since early on this season. But Wednesday he was forced to. He came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning with the tying run on first base. The right-hander got out of the jam with allowing only run — that coming on an error — as the top-seeded Rockets beat No. 4 Marengo, 8-4, in the semifinals of the Class 3A Hampshire baseball regional.

     
  • Join planting at Native Medicinal Garden in Lords ParkMay 23, 2012 12:00 AM
    Hanover Township will present a plaque honoring Lords Park for Preservation Month on Saturday, May 26. In conjunction, the Elgin Public Museum will install the Native Medicinal Garden, featuring plants that Native peoples used for healing the sick and maintaining health.

    It didn't matter that the Lisle girls soccer team managed but 3 shots against a stringent St. Edward defense. It only mattered that one of those 3 shots went in the net. Junior Skyler Tomko scored unassisted from the top of the 18-yard box with 16:06 left in the second half, and junior goalkeeper Vanessa Roach stopped 11 shots as Lisle denied St. Edward a return trip to the Class 1A state finals with a 1-0 victory at the Hinckley-Big Rock supersectional Tuesday.

     
  • Hampshire’s Bram steps down May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
    When Ken Bram came into the Hampshire softball program seven years ago he admits he knew little about softball. "I played baseball all my life but when I started here I hadn't watched one inning of a softball game," said Bram, who was an assistant that first year and the Whip-Purs' head coach the past six seasons. Bram announced earlier this month that this would be his last season coaching, and Tuesday's 13-4 loss to Burlington Central in the Class 3A regional semifinal at Central marked the end of his tenure in the Hampshire dugout.
