  Barrington’s Scarbrough has reason to smile May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
  Barrington's AJ Scarbrough is usually smiling and he had a good reason for it during Friday's Class 3A state track prelims in Charleston. Scarbrough set a school-record in the triple jump and leads the field going into Saturday's finals. Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

  The Schaumburg Palatine High School District board of education honored three students at a meeting Thursday for being named Golden Apple Scholars. The three students will each attend an Illinois university in the fall and receive thousands of dollars in scholarships, along with mentoring and support as they pursue their degrees in education.   Palatine maximized its opportunity for a big inning and minimized the damage by Hersey in a Class 4A regional semifinal. Jarrod Juskiewicz and Nick Roy homered to back the solid pitching of Eric Scheuermann as the 14th-seeded Pirates upset fourth-seeded Mid-Suburban League champion Hersey 6-2.

  Palatine scored first in Wednesday's semifinal of the Hoffman Estates Class 4A softball regional.But then Hersey finished with some big firsts.The No. 8-seeded Huskies won their first regional game in five seasons under coach Molly Freeman as junior Sarah Platt fired a 4-hitter for a 9-2 triump over the No. 9 Pirates.It also marked the first time under Freeman the Huskies were not in a regional play-in game to start the state tourney and first time they started the regional with a record of .500.

  Fifth-seeded Glenbrook South and superb striker April Cronin broke the hearts of the Palatine girls soccer faithful Tuesday evening as the Titans overwhelmed the sectional hosts 6-2 to end the season for the No. 13 Pirates (14-9-2), who were hosting semifinal action at Chic Anderson Stadium. Cronin struck three times before 20 minutes had elapsed, and she put the finishing touches on a brilliant offensive show at 53 minutes to give the Titans (19-4-4) their 13th consecutive victory and a place in Friday's sectional final with No. 2 Buffalo Grove.

  Conant ended its most successful regular season by splitting a doubleheader with New Trier on Saturday in Hoffman Estates. In a battle between two top-seeded sectional teams, the Cougars (30-3) outlasted the Trevians in Game 1 for a 2-1 victory in nine innings. Junior Miranda Cavin singled, went to second on Kim Jacobson's sacrifice and eventually scored on an error in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run. Plus other softball games from the northwest suburbs.

• That was one Reilly fast sectional at Fremd May 18, 2012 12:00 AM
  The bragging rights in the Reilly household will likely switch to current Libertyville senior Shane Reilly. Going back the 1980's, Reilly's father Mike was a distance runner at Libertyville and had put up a best effort of 4:24 in the 1,600-meter run. Friday night at the Class 3A Fremd sectional, Reilly bested his dad with a sensational effort in the 1,600-meter run. Reilly ran fifth in a loaded mile field, but his 4:19.66 time was good enough for a trip to the state finals next weekend at Eastern Illinois University. Reilly now is the best of the Reillys. "I finally beat my dad's time," Reilly said. "I felt really good coming into the final lap and knew I had a good time in me tonight." Reilly's six-second PR was just one of many great efforts at the Fremd sectional. The host Vikings won the meet with 71 points to 68 for runner-up Stevenson.
