    Man sentenced for mailing pipe bombs, threats May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
    A former machinist from Dubuque, Iowa, was sentenced by a federal judge Tuesday to 37 years in prison for mailing pipe bombs and threatening letters to investment firms, including some sent from Rolling Meadows and Palatine. John P. Tomkins, 48, known as “the bishop” for how he signed his letters, mailed the bombs and threats between 2005 and 2007, federal authorities said.

    Myra Chung of Des Plaines struggled through her first high school sewing lesson. Now, she’s a Harper College fashion student designing her own collection. Chung and classmate Michelle Kreutner won $2,500 Fashion Group International scholarships to hone their craft.

    Schaumburg Park District’s Home Run 5K will begin at 8 a.m. June 2 in the Schaumburg Baseball Stadium parking lot and end inside Schaumburg Baseball Stadium, 1999 S. Springinsguth Road. The chip-timed event for ages 6 and older will be held on a USATF certified 3.1 mile course. Multiple age divisions are available for the 5K race.

    The Palatine Historical Society’s annual Garden Tour will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 23. Maps can be picked up beginning at noon that day at Towne Square, Smith and Palatine roads. The cost is $10 before June 23 or $15 the day of the event.

    Harper speech, debate team takes fourth at Nationals May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Harper College Speech Team finished fourth in the nation at the recent Phi Rho Pi National community college speech and debate tournament, besting dozens of fellow community colleges and boasting two individual champions. Elisa Galvan of Schaumburg and Brianna Bitout of Arlington Heights netted gold medals for extemporaneous and impromptu speaking, respectively.

    Students on the math team at Fremd High School in Palatine proved in 90 minutes that they are tops in the state. Members of the team Benjamin Lewis, Berwin Xie, Chungho Lee, Soumyaa Mazumder, Jennie Yang, and Emily Jia, placed No. 1 in Illinois in the Purple Comet Math Meet and were ranked in the top 20 in the nation.

    Kukec's People features 91-year-old Chester Matusek, a 57-year employee at Motorola Inc. and now Motorola Solutions. He's survived massive layoffs, technology evolutions, and multiple CEOs. Over the years, he has worked on metals and molds to help shape some of the company's legendary devices, from the first cell phone to other products. He's now repairing devices, such as World War II walkie talkies for the company's museum. And he plans to continue working.

  • Seven held at gunpoint during robbery Saturday in Palatine May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
    Authorities are searching for two men they said held seven people at gunpoint Saturday evening while robbing a business in Palatine. Officers responded at 6:15 p.m. to the Verizon Wireless store at 784 E. Dundee Road after two thieves ordered three employees and four customers to the ground while they stole electronics and cash, police said.

    A complaint the village of Palatine filed more than a year ago against former village Councilman Warren Kostka will go to trial at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the Cook County courthouse in Rolling Meadows. The complaint outlines numerous property violations at Kostka's house on the 100 block of North Forest Avenue. The legal dispute appeared headed toward a resolution after several court hearings, but officials said issues remain.

    Do you think sports are all fun and games? While that is not incorrect, the truth of the matter lies in the obvious fact that a child who participates in a sport is offered far more benefits than just having an enjoyable time. Although some may argue participating in a sport is a distraction and a time consuming activity, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention declares otherwise. Childhood obesity has reached an all time high, doubling in children and tripling in adolescents over the past 30 years. In 2010, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. With obesity becoming such a prevalent issue, it is no fallacy that children need to increase their physical activity, and what better way to start then by participating in a sport.
