D211 Golden Apple Scholars honoredMay 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The Schaumburg Palatine High School District board of education honored three students at a meeting Thursday for being named Golden Apple Scholars. The three students will each attend an Illinois university in the fall and receive thousands of dollars in scholarships, along with mentoring and support as they pursue their degrees in education. The winners are Lizbeth Arreola, Palatine High School; Maya Lane, Conant High School; and Jae Eun Shin, Conant High School.

Conant students win first place for electric vehicle May 20, 2012 12:00 AM
Within a matter of months, students at Conant High School successfully converted a gasoline go-cart into an award-winning electric vehicle. Members of the school's Engineering and Electronics Club attended a competition in Michigan won two first place trophies for onboard electronics and presentation. “I think they set the bar extremely high for themselves,” said Peter Goss, applied technology teacher at Conant.

Juvenile charged with aggravated arson in Schaumburg High School fire May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
A juvenile, whose name and age hasn't been released, has been been charged with aggravated arson after authorities said he set a fire Friday afternoon in a Schaumburg High School hazardous materials closet. The blaze caused an estimated $2,000 in damage.

Students and administrators at Hoffman Estates High School Friday briefly disagreed over whether the distribution of anti-bullying T-shirts was the proper way to honor the memory of a freshman girl who committed suicide last weekend. Students were asked to stop distributing and wearing the T-shirts near the entrance to the school at the start of the day Friday morning.

A small fire in a wood shop at Schaumburg High School Friday may have been intentionally set, authorities said. Schaumburg police were questioning a juvenile Friday night, though its unclear if any charges would be filed.

Thanks to the quick thinking of an athletic trainer and a parent, Rich Keller, a volunteer assistant coach for the Schaumburg High School freshman girls' softball team, is alive and doing well after collapsing in an apparent cardiac arrest Monday. "Every doctor we've seen has commented on what a great job they did and how amazing the results are," Chris Keller said. "They cant even tell that his heart was shocked, yet alone stopped."

D211 discusses new way to name academic scholars Apr 13, 2012 12:00 AM
Students at all of Schaumburg-Palatine High School District 211s five high schools must now reach a regular grade point average of at least 3.90 or a weighted grade point average of at least 4.70 to be named academic scholars. The change comes after the District 211 board of education approved the elimination of class rank in December.

No merit to hazmat call at Schaumburg High School Apr 6, 2012 12:00 AM
Firefighters found no hazardous conditions during an approximately two-hour hazmat call at Schaumburg High School, while it was not in session Friday afternoon. The call was prompted by a chemical smell detected by concrete contractors doing work on the building's lower level.
