Mickelson shot a 4-under 67 on Sunday to finish at 28-under 256, two strokes off the PGA Tour record of 254 set by Tommy Armour III in the 2003 Texas Open.

  •  The Chicago Golf Show will celebrate its 30th anniversary when it returns next month to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. The show also will have a presenting sponsor thanks to the BMW Championship at Conway Farms.

    The Chicago Golf Show will get a big boost for its 30th anniversary staging next month. Rarely has the show, to be held Feb. 22-24 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, had a presenting sponsor. The last time was in 2009, when South Carolina golf mecca Myrtle Beach took the leadership role. This time the show will be presented by the BMW Championship, the Western Golf Association's premier event, and golf writer Len Ziehm calls it a win-win situation.

    Dustin Johnson ended a windy week with a wild ride Tuesday that carried him to the first win of the PGA Tour season.Despite hitting two drives into native areas that cost him three shots, Johnson never lost the lead at Kapalua. He closed with a 5-under 68 for a four-shot victory in the Tournament of Champions, though it was up for grabs with five holes remaining.

    The Americans are bringing back Tom Watson as their Ryder Cup captain with hopes of ending two decades of losing in Europe. Watson, however, faces a tall order as the Americans have lost seven of the last nine Ryder Cups and have not won away from home since 1993, when Watson was the captain at The Belfry in England. The eight-time major champion will be 65 when the 2014 Ryder Cup is played at Gleneagles in Scotland, making him the oldest captain in Ryder Cup history. "I was waiting for about 20 years to get the call," Watson said with that familiar gap-tooth grin. "I loved it the first time. I'm a great fan of the Ryder Cup. It's a great honor to be able to do it again."

    Rory McIlroy sure didn't feel like the PGA Tour player of the year when he arrived at Kiawah Island for the final major of the year. He had missed three cuts, had not contended in a major and had only one win. The last two months changed everything. McIlroy was announced Tuesday as player of the year, and while the tour does not disclose the vote of its players, this was the equivalent of a tap-in.
