The teenager has become a worldwide star since winning the Olympic all-around title in London, the first African-American gymnast to claim gymnastics' biggest prize. And now she has earned another honor.     The world's attention wavered between the tragic and the silly in 2012, and along the way, Web surfers searched in huge numbers to find out about a royal princess, the latest iPad, and a record-breaking skydiver. Whitney Houston was the "top trending" search of the year, according to Google Inc.'s year-end "zeitgeist" report. Google's 12th annual roundup is "an in-depth look at the spirit of the times as seen through the billions of searches on Google over the past year," the company said in a blog post Wednesday.

    The World Anti-Doping Agency wants the IOC to test athletes earlier before future Olympics to catch drug cheats. A WADA panel that monitored the anti-doping program at the London Olympics suggests the IOC adopt "more intelligent testing as far in advance of competition as possible" instead of simply conducting more tests.

    Irwin Cohen, a 1972 U.S. Olympian and a longtime judo coach, died Monday. The Buffalo Grove man coached many, many students, including some future Olympians. "He made these kids what they are today," said Kim Golembo of Vernon Hills, whose son, Max, worked with Cohen from the age of 5.

    Basking in post-Olympic glory, Britain succumbed to reality Monday with commuters venturing back to work and Heathrow Airport experiencing one of its busiest days ever. Some 116,000 people were expected to leave Monday from Heathrow, London's busiest hub, an exodus that includes some 6,000 athletes and Prime Minister David Cameron going on his vacation. Heathrow usually handles about 95,000 passengers a day.
