Founding member of The Doors dies at 74 May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist and founding member of The Doors who had a dramatic impact on rock 'n' roll, has died. He was 74. Publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald says Manzarek died Monday at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family. He had bile duct cancer.

Rhett Lundy, a 14-year-old freshman at South Elgin High School, died in his sleep Wednesday. Autopsy results showed he had an enlarged heart. The school held an assembly Friday to honor his memory.

A portrait of Dr. Peter Pleotis still hangs in the doctors’ lounge at Northwest Community Hospital, some 14 years after he retired. The former obstetrician and gynecologist, who practiced 37 years at the hospital, left a standard that his colleagues still measure themselves against. Dr. Pleotis died Monday from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was 82.

Beloved Larkin High School teacher dies at 56 May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
The Larkin High School nursing teacher around whom hundreds have rallied in recent months as she struggled to recover from multiple strokes and fight a rare form of cancer died Tuesday at age 56. Deborah Daly, of Bartlett, started teaching at Larkin High School in 2002 and went on to sponsor the Health Occupations Students of America where she helped numerous students on a path toward careers in the health fields.

Former co-workers and family are remembering longtime Conant High School math department chair Bill McCauley as an exceptional mentor who effectively brought together the young teachers, creating a second family for them all. McCauley died Wednesday at age 78. "No department head was ever more dedicated and more supportive of the teachers and their mission than Bill McCauley," said Don Grossnickle, former assistant principal at Conant. "He was a great enthusiast."

Roger Ebert rose to national fame while reviewing movies on his weekly syndicated television show alongside Gene Siskel. His work at the Chicago Sun-Times made him, in 1975, the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. Ebert died Thursday at the age of 70.

When doctors told Valecha Banks she needed to remove her son from Southern California's rampant smog and pollen, she immediately put in for a transfer to her company's Schaumburg office. But just three days into the pair's first visit back, Demerio Thomas suffered an asthma attack from which he wouldn't recover. “I never thought anything this bad could have happened,” Banks said. “He wanted to go back so bad. I'm just grateful he had the time of his life those first few days.”
