After understandably struggling in 2011 to a 3-12 record, 1-4 in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division, the Vikings entered Thursday with a 12-8 mark and at 3-1 in the River are vying for a conference title.

Wheaton Academys baseball game May 7 against Aurora Christian is not your normal game. To be played at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva starting with the sophomores at 4:30 p.m. and varsity at 6:30, it will serve as a fundraiser for Wheaton Academys Project Lead (Leadership Education and Development), which branches into global, local and campus concerns.

St. Charles boys lacrosse teams ready for first meeting Apr 12, 2012 12:00 AM
For the first time, a line has been drawn. Saturdays Crosstown Lacrosse Classic at the East Side Sports Complex in St. Charles marks the first time varsity boys teams representing both St. Charles East and St. Charles North will face each other. After operating as a unified body for some 15 years, the St. Charles Lacrosse Club has split its boys programs. The girls team remains a co-op.

The assemblage of local graduates excelling in the college ranks is so vast that last weeks column could contain only about half of them. So once more, an update is in order ... Illinois sophomore midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo (Waubonsie Valley) was in Carson, Calif., from Monday and will return to the Midwest after this Sunday, working with the United States Under-20 National Team in preparation for this summers FIFA U20 Womens World Cup.

On a training run years ago at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton, Glenbard Souths boys track team came upon Lisle coach Ken Jakalski, whose team was doing the same thing. As Glenbard South coach Andy Preuss remembered it Jakalski wore a tropical bird costume a toucan outfit, he called it. Their paths cross once again, in a way, as each of these retiring Hall of Fame coaches enters the homestretch.
