    June is Leave No Child Inside month, and the Chicago Wilderness alliance is celebrating by offering a series of free outdoor events for families. The village of Algonquin is hosting the 10th annual Conservation Community Day on Friday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. along the Woods Creek bike path from Bunker Hill Drive south to Woods Creek Lane (near Ted Spella Park) in Algonquin.

     
  •  Andrew Grosch, 17, is the lead singer of A Secret, a mathcore with slam poetry band that performed Saturday at the Cary Area Battle of the Bands. Michael Teper, 17, is the drummer. All five members of the band go to high school together and have been performing since Nov. 2011.

    Eight bands of mostly teenagers battled it out Saturday for a chance to represent the area at the state fair while fans baked under a hot sun or vied for minimal shade at Lions Park in Cary. The Cary Area Park District has held the contest for five years inviting young musicians ages 12 to 21 to compete. Musical stylings varied and included pop, rock and metal.

     
  • Injured teen found on Cary street May 18, 2012 12:00 AM
    A teenage boy was transported to the hospital by helicopter Friday night after he was found lying in the middle of a residential street in Cary. The victim, who is about 15 or 16, was suffering from head injuries when emergency crews found him about 8 p.m. at the intersection of Montana Drive and Bristol Way, according to Capt. Dennis Krenz of the Cary Fire Protection District.

     
  • Roughly 500 people walked in the March of Dimes' “March For Babies” 5K walk Sunday at Old School Forest Preserve in Libertyville. The walk, held at several locations around the suburbs, raised money to help prevent premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality.

    Justin Niekamp, a Pingree Grove resident, was part of several March of Dimes walks throughout the suburbs. He was on “Nathan's Team,” which included the team's namesake, Niekamp's 6-year-old son, who was born premature and underwent heart surgery when he was four days old. “A lot of those organizations like the March of Dimes are a catalyst for those leading researches. That's why we wanted to make sure that we were a part of it today,” Justin said.

    A 40-year plan calling for the expansion of McHenry County College could cost $640 million -- $278.5 million in the first decade alone. The master plan was fully unveiled Thursday night, along with its hefty price tag. Senior project manager Leanne Meyer-Smith, of Wight & Co., which devised the plan, said it places a strong emphasis on technology, sustainability and wellness.

    McHenry County College's student group Pride is putting the spotlight on violence in order to combat it. The hallways are dotted with 10 bodies outlined in white duct tape, each flanked by a photo and description of a different member of the LGBTQ community who was either murdered in hate crimes or committed suicide because they were being bullied.
