MCC president gets contract extension Apr 30, 2013 12:00 AM
Vicky Smith will remain McHenry County College's president through 2015, thanks to a last-minute contract extension by outgoing board members. Newly elected Trustee Molly Walsh, who was seated after the vote on Smith's contract last Thursday, said she was disappointed the former board decided to act. The vote came amid community criticism and requests by Walsh and Chris Jenner, another new board member, to hold off. The vote was not contractually necessary until June.

McHenry County College students in the Learning Community class that combines art appreciation and composition used their bodies as a canvas for expression and constructed garments using reclaimed or found materials. Their assignment called for their garments to include a kinetic and/or sound-making element.

Gov. Pat Quinn's decision to declare McHenry County a state disaster area due to the flooding, meant the state and county could start assessing the damage floodwater, a process that began Monday. At the same time, Algonquin Police Chief Russell Laine reminded would-be boaters to stay out of the Fox River, which is closed due to the flooding.

Late night flooding of the Fox River near Cary forced the continued closure of the Rawson Bridge in unincorporated McHenry County near the village. Most of Rawson Bridge Road lies within the Cary Fire Protection District, while the Wauconda Fire Protection District covers a small part of it.

McHenry County College trustees Barbara Walters and Carol Larson were voted out of office last week. Three days later, officials called a special meeting, the agenda for which included extending college President Vicky Smith's contract through 2015. Community members have called foul, saying this is not a decision outgoing board members should make. Trustees delayed the vote at Tuesday night's meeting but still could make a decision before new board members are sworn in April 25.

The proposal for a $42 million health sciences building at McHenry County College may be dead, thanks to major changeover on the board of trustees that will follow Tuesday’s election. Two longtime board members who supported the expansion project were not re-elected while three newcomers, all of whom announced opposition to the plan during the campaign, were voted in. Trustee Dennis Adams did not run for re-election to the board.
MCC tax clinic expects to have served 600 people by week’s end Apr 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Volunteers will be in place by 8 a.m. Saturday, two hours before the VITA Clinic at McHenry County College is scheduled to open. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinic is in its sixth year serving low and middle-income individuals and families. A team of about 20 people have worked Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings since Jan. 19 to help community members file their taxes for free, and they’re expecting a rush on Saturday — the last day the clinic will be open before taxes are due April 15.

Wisconsin man donates equivalent of $800,000 to MCCMar 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Close to 200 McHenry County College students could get the help they need to attend MCC or finish out their bachelor's degrees, thanks to a recent donation by a Wisconsin man. Michael Klingenberg, of Twin Lakes, donated $100,000 and a piece of lakefront property worth an estimated $700,000 to establish the Forge Ahead Scholarship at MCC. The money will pay for up to 24 full scholarships per year at the community college as well as two to three scholarships per year covering 50 percent of students' tuitions for the final two years at the Illinois public school of their choice.

When Chris Jenner was faced with a decision between running for re-election to the Cary District 26 school board and continuing a bid for the McHenry County College board of trustees, he chose to leave the school board behind. Jenner originally filed for both races but after scrutiny over whether he'd be able to serve in both positions, decided to stop his re-election campaign and focus entirely on the college race. One issue that makes him passionate about MCC's board - a proposed expansion - also drew a handful of others into the race.

Harper approves $2 per credit hour tuition increaseFeb 28, 2013 12:00 AM
Consistent with a regional trend among community colleges, Harper College will ask its students to dig a little deeper into their pockets for the cost of a high education. The board of trustees last week unanimously approved increasing tuition by $2 per credit hour beginning in the summer 2013 term. For a full-time student taking 30 credit hours annually, that’s an additional $60 for a total of $3,735.
