  • Notre Dame’s Cole Luke makes most of opportunity Sep 4, 2014 5:16 PM
The loss of cornerback KeiVarae Russell while Notre Dame determines whether five football players were involved in academic fraud has given Cole Luke a chance to show what he can do. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound sophomore played solidly in the opener, with Rice completing only two passes against him, one for a 2-yard gain. Irish coach Brian Kelly said he was pleased with Luke’s play. “I thought he played with confidence. I really liked just his demeanor. I think that’s really big at that position,” he said.

  • Irish look to improve secondary play vs. Michigan Sep 2, 2014 5:42 PM
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly is sounding a bit this week like the prison warden in the 1967 film “Cool Hand Luke,” who famously said: “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” Fighting Irish safeties Max Redfield and Elijah Shumate failed to make sure the Notre Dame secondary was lined up correctly against Rice, leading to several big plays by the Owls last week before Notre Dame won 48-17. “We’ve got to get these guys communicating better back there,” Kelly said.

Reserve safety Eilar Hardy has joined four other Notre Dame players being withheld from practice and games as the university investigates possible academic dishonesty and NCAA violations. He played in 10 games last season, starting against Pittsburgh and BYU, and finished with 26 tackles. He did not play as a freshman or sophomore.

  • Schmidt goes from walk-on to starter at Notre Dame Aug 28, 2014 5:52 PM
Former walk-on Joe Schmidt doesn’t believe he has made it because he is now Notre Dame’s starting middle linebacker. The 6-foot, 235-pound senior said he doesn’t ever want to feel as though he’s made it. “There’s so much more I want to accomplish, that I want us to accomplish as a team,” he said. “I have to take the same mindset every day, to attack the day, attack the practice, whatever we have — the meetings. ... I don’t really think that it behooves you to get fat and think that you’ve arrived ever.

  • Notre Dame will count on freshmen on defense Aug 26, 2014 7:32 PM
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly expects some teeth-gnashing while watching the Fighting Irish defense this fall. The 17th-ranked Irish already were expected to be young on defense in the season opener against Rice on Saturday. That’s before learning they’d be without four players, three of them on defense, who are under investigation by the university to determine whether they received improper assistance from others on papers and homework.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly on Saturday dismissed talk that he needs to do a better job of recruiting players who are better students to avoid the academic problems that have plagued the football program for the past 15 months. “I think we’ve brought in the right young men,” he said. “I think we have to continue to do a better job educating them. • Notre Dame looking for more from receiving corps Aug 9, 2014 4:26 PM
Notre Dame will be without receiver Torii Hunter Jr. to start the football season. Coach Brian Kelly announced Saturday that Hunter is expected to be out four to six weeks after tearing his left groin. Hunter, whose father plays for the Detroit Tigers, sat out his freshman year after breaking his leg in a high school all-star game. The Irish are looking for a go-to receiver to replace T.J. Jones, who graduated. The only returning receiver with more than 15 catches is DaVaris Daniels, who had 49 catches for 745 yards. But he was suspended for the spring semester for an academic violation and he’s been limited in preseason camp with a groin injury. Kelly is hoping players such as Chris Brown and Corey Robinson can help fill the void.

  • Kelly: Quarterback competition isn’t artificial Aug 1, 2014 6:16 PM
Coach Brian Kelly is heading into preseason workouts without knowing who will start at quarterback for Notre Dame, insisting it’s not the foregone conclusion many believe. “I’m not playing a game where we’re trying to create artificial competition within the ranks,” he said at a news conference Friday. “I think we have competition for that particular role to show itself. I think it can show itself. When it does, we’ll be ready to make that declaration. It just hasn’t shown itself yet.”

What is fair for college athletes? Ask 100 people, get 100 different answers, ranging from give the players nothing, to pay them like professionals. Obviously, there's a reasonable answer somewhere in between. At the least, the result ought to be a seat at the table for the players bringing in billions for the NCAA and making millionaires of the men who coach them.
