  • Late penalty douses Notre Dame’s upset bid Oct 18, 2014 11:29 PM
For a few seconds, it looked as if Everett Golson and Notre Dame had another streak-busting victory, this time against the defending national champions from Florida State. As the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish celebrated an apparent go-ahead touchdown with 13 seconds left, flags flew. The call: offensive pass interference. The touchdown was gone. After leading for most of the game, the Irish lost 31-27 to No. 2 Florida State on Saturday night.

  • Notre Dame game could make or break Florida St. Oct 17, 2014 6:09 PM
No one around the Florida State football team wants to call Saturday’s game against No. 5 Notre Dame a must-win. Reality could tell a different story. An undefeated FSU team should be a lock for the College Football Playoffs. Things, however, could change drastically with a loss to Notre Dame.

  • Imrem: College football no longer land of make-believe Oct 16, 2014 5:30 AM
This weekend's big Notre Dame-Florida State game is a prime example of why it's so difficult to even pretend anymore that college football is an innocent school activity.

  • Notre Dame balances run production vs. promise Oct 7, 2014 7:27 PM
Notre Dame’s running game has come down to a balance of production vs. promise. Senior captain Cam McDaniel represents production, while sophomores Greg Bryant and Tarean Folston represent potential and promise. Coach Brian Kelly is hoping the sixth-ranked Irish can turn that promise more into production as the season wears on, starting against North Carolina (2-3) on Saturday. “We’re doing OK. We’re going to get better. We’re committed to being better to running the football,” Kelly said Tuesday.

  • Golson rallies Irish to 17-14 win over Stanford Oct 5, 2014 12:45 AM
Everett Golson spotted tight end Ben Koyack alone in the back of the end zone just in time. On fourth-and-11 from the 23 and trailing 14-10, Golson dropped back to pass and managed to avoid the Stanford rush just long enough to find Koyack as two Cardinal defensive backs tried to recover from the blown assignment. Koyack caught the pass as he fell out of bounds, while safety Jordan Richards dove to try to break it up, and scored the winning touchdown with 61 seconds left to give the No. 9 Irish the 17-14 victory on a cold, rainy Saturday.

  • Notre Dame ready for physical game against Stanford Oct 3, 2014 10:48 PM
Stanford has a history of beating Notre Dame teams ranked in the top 10 in South Bend. The question is, can it happen again when 14th-ranked Stanford (3-1) clashes with the No. 9 Irish (4-0)? The Cardinal is actually favored in this one, despite the Irish having a better ranking and winning 15 of their last 16 games at Notre Dame Stadium.

  • Kelly understands suspended player’s frustration Oct 3, 2014 6:42 PM
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says he understands the frustration expressed on a social media account belonging to one of five players being held out of practices and games while they go through hearings to determine whether they are guilty of academic dishonesty.

  • Notre Dame faces first tough test against Stanford Oct 1, 2014 6:19 AM
Ninth-ranked Notre Dame is about to face its stiffest challenge this season. After beating four teams with a combined record of 7-11, with none of those opponents’ victories coming against Power Five conference teams, the Fighting Irish (4-0) on Saturday host 14th-ranked Stanford (3-1), which has the nation’s top-rated dense. The Cardinal also has beaten the Irish four of their last five meetings.

  • Coaches use large network to watch for injury Sep 30, 2014 6:46 PM
The sideline is often the worst place to watch a football game. Even for the head coach standing front and center, getting a good look at what is happening on the field can be difficult. Behind the coach can be 100 players and dozens of assistants and staffers packed into an area 50 yards long, all zipping from play to play. How is a coach supposed to look for injuries in all that activity, and still run his team? With plenty of help.

  • Golson completes 25 straight, No. 8 ND wins 31-15 Sep 27, 2014 11:38 PM
Everett Golson completed 25 straight passes, setting a Notre Dame record, and threw for four touchdowns to lead the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish to a 31-15 victory against Syracuse on Saturday night. Golson’s record-breaking game was far from perfect. The quarterback threw his first two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter by Durell Eskridge. He fumbled the ball away deep in Syracuse territory and bumbled an attempt to spike the ball late in the first half to stop the clock into another giveaway.

  • Syracuse next for Notre Dame, maturing Golson Sep 26, 2014 4:05 PM
The offense Brian Kelly ran when he was coach at Cincinnati, the one that pushed the pace and regularly rung up 30-point games, has finally arrived at Notre Dame. The return of quarterback Everett Golson and his development from game-manager to playmaker has allowed Kelly to unleash his spread attack. The result is an offense on pace to be the most productive in the coach’s five-year tenure in South Bend, Indiana.

  • Kelly: 5 suspended players to have hearings by next week Sep 23, 2014 1:53 PM

Everett Golson threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as No. 11 Notre Dame scored the final 20 points Saturday night and beat Purdue 30-14. The Irish are 3-0 for the second time in three years. Purdue (1-2) has lost seven straight in this series, which has been played every year since 1946. The two teams will not meet again until 2020.

  • Notre Dame’s Cole Luke makes most of opportunity Sep 4, 2014 5:16 PM
The loss of cornerback KeiVarae Russell while Notre Dame determines whether five football players were involved in academic fraud has given Cole Luke a chance to show what he can do. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound sophomore played solidly in the opener, with Rice completing only two passes against him, one for a 2-yard gain. Irish coach Brian Kelly said he was pleased with Luke’s play. “I thought he played with confidence. I really liked just his demeanor. I think that’s really big at that position,” he said.

  • Irish look to improve secondary play vs. Michigan Sep 2, 2014 5:42 PM
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly is sounding a bit this week like the prison warden in the 1967 film “Cool Hand Luke,” who famously said: “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” Fighting Irish safeties Max Redfield and Elijah Shumate failed to make sure the Notre Dame secondary was lined up correctly against Rice, leading to several big plays by the Owls last week before Notre Dame won 48-17. “We’ve got to get these guys communicating better back there,” Kelly said.

  • Kelly: 5 Notre Dame players remain out for now Sep 2, 2014 1:55 PM
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says there is no change in the status of five players who were investigated by the university for possible cheating. Kelly said Tuesday the status of those five players could change quickly if he receives word they are eligible to play. Kelly said last week that the investigation is complete and the cases were in the hands of the school’s code of honor committee.
