    A Wheeling varsity basketball program heading in the right direction hit a speed bump Saturday night. A big speed bump. The Wildcats ran into the defensive machine known at Notre Dame in the consolation finals of their Wildcat Hardwood Classic and, trailing throughout, dropped a 57-44 decision on the last night of the tournament.

     
  • Andress helps Conant complete perfect day at Addison Trail Dec 7, 2013 6:05 PM
    Conant saved its best for last. Dan Andress earned a hard-fought 6-4 decision over Stephen Hayden in the final bout of the day to edge host Addison Trail 33-28 and finish a perfect 3-0 effort Saturday afternoon in Addison. The Cougars bested state ranked Notre Dame 36-27 in its opener, then walloped Glenbrook North 84-0, setting the stage for what proved to be a thriller with the feel of something much bigger than an early dual.

    Fremd schemed to shut down Notre Dame running back Chris James. For the first half, the Vikings did just that, limiting the Division 1 prospect to 47 yards on 14 carries. But James erupted for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns in the second half as Notre Dame knocked off Fremd 28-14 in the opening round of the Class 8A football playoffs in Palatine.

     
  • Carmel completes season with victory Oct 26, 2013 12:15 AM
    Carmel 24, Notre Dame 21: The visiting Corsairs ended their season on a positive note, capturing the East Suburban Catholic Conference finale by upsetting the Dons in Niles. Notre Dame fell to 6-3 and finished 3-3 in the ESCC. Carmel finished 2-7 and 2-4 in the conference.

    A 28-yard interceptin return for touchdown by defensive back Pat McDonaugh was followed by Pat Cravens’ 77-yarder, launching Notre Dame to a 28-14 East Suburban Catholic Conference win over St. Viator at Forest View Educational Center in Arlington Heights on Friday.

  • Niles Notre Dame QB picks apart Bartlett Sep 7, 2013 10:01 PM
    The defensive plan for the Bartlett football team against visiting Niles Notre Dame was to stop Dons’ senior running back Chris James. For the most part, the Hawks did that, holding James to 82 rushing yards on 19 carries. Unfortunately for Bartlett, Dons’ quarterback Ryan Greene had a career game going 17-of-20 for 314 yards and 5 touchdowns leading Notre Dame (2-0) to a 47-6 nonconference win on Saturday night at Millennium Field.

  • Juskiewicz, Palatine roll into regional title berth May 24, 2013 11:57 PM
    Jarrod Juskiewicz pitched Palatine into the Class 4A regional championship round Friday. The Pirates senior held regional host Deerfield to 4 singles as Palatine rolled to a 7-0 decision. Palatine meets Glenbrook South with a regional title at stake. The game will start at 11 a.m. Saturday at Deerfield. The Palatine bats had plenty of support for Juskiewicz on Friday. Zach Serna went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI, Bill Stewart hit a 3-run homer and Greg Grana had 2 hits. Juskiewicz (4-3) lowered his ERA to 2.26. He threw 57 of his 89 pitches for strikes, and struck out none while walking one as the Pirates committed only 1 error. Stewart’s home in the fourth inning put Palatine up 4-0. The Pirates (21-14-1) scored three more times in the top of the seventh to get some breathing room as a run scored on a wild pitch, Juskiewicz produced a sacrifice fly and Serna delivered an RBI double. New Trier 4, Leyden 3: The Trevians scored 2 runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to advance in the Von Steuben regional, played at Northeastern University. Kevin Duaire earned the victory for New Trier, which meets Niles West in Saturday’s 11 a.m. championship. Notre Dame 5, Lane 1: The Dons earned a spot in regional they’re hosting as Ryan Nikolich tossed a complete game for Notre Dame. Elk Grove (23-9) meets Notre Dame in regional championship play at 2 p.m. Saturday.

     
  • Prazuch, St. Viator stroll by Notre Dame in ESCC finale May 15, 2013 11:35 PM
    Matt Prazuch likes to take a walk. So much so that he took 5 of them Wednesday. And his last one was the best of all. It came with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the 12th to drive in the eventual game-winning running as St. Viator outlasted host Notre Dame 13-8 in Niles.

     
  • State IHSA bass fishing championship postponed May 1, 2013 1:52 PM
    The Illinois High School Association has announced that the 2013 IHSA Bass Fishing State Final Tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 3-4 at Carlyle Lake in Carlyle, has been postponed due to potentially dangerous water levels and will be rescheduled to unfold in Carlyle later this spring.

    At 26, Des Plaines Mayor-elect Matt Bogusz already has earned many distinctions — among them youngest mayor in the Northwest suburbs, and perhaps the youngest city leader in recent Illinois history. “What he lacks in institutional knowledge, he makes up for in enthusiasm and really a go-getter attitude,” Northwest Municipal Conference Executive Director Mark Fowler said.

  • Quick-starting Notre Dame handles St. Viator Jan 26, 2013 8:39 PM
    A highly anticipated contest between St.Viator and Notre Dame at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates on Saturday didn't have the finish Lion fans were hoping for. The Dons bolted out of the gate, running up a 14-2 lead with 2:45 left in the first quarter and forcing St.Viator to play catch-up all night in an East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup that tipped off three games in the National Guard High School Hoops Showdown. Notre Dame never trailed and tamed the Lions 64-48. Notre Dame stays a game back of the lead in the conference race at 5-1 (and 18-2 overall), while the Lions fell to 14-5 and 4-2.

     
  • Centre of attention: Showdown draws top teams Jan 23, 2013 9:41 PM
    Some of the top area boys basketball teams will be in action Saturday at the Sears Central for the National Guard High School Hoops Showdown. Action tips off at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with St. Viator vs. Notre Dame, followed by Naperville Central vs. Benet and finishing up with West Aurora vs. St. Joseph.

     
  • Notre Dame takes charge against Conant Jan 12, 2013 8:47 PM
    Everything seemed to be going Conant’s way in its nonconference game against Notre Dame in Hoffman Estates on Saturday night. At halftime, the Cougars led the highly rated Dons 19-16. Solid defense, a patient offense and good shot selection were the norm for Conant. That didn’t last, though. Notre Dame came out in the second half with a swarming defense that led to turnovers and quick baskets in the Dons’ 46-32 win.
