A highly anticipated contest between St.Viator and Notre Dame at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates on Saturday didn't have the finish Lion fans were hoping for. The Dons bolted out of the gate, running up a 14-2 lead with 2:45 left in the first quarter and forcing St.Viator to play catch-up all night in an East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup that tipped off three games in the National Guard High School Hoops Showdown. Notre Dame never trailed and tamed the Lions 64-48. Notre Dame stays a game back of the lead in the conference race at 5-1 (and 18-2 overall), while the Lions fell to 14-5 and 4-2.

  • Notre Dame takes charge against Conant Jan 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Everything seemed to be going Conant’s way in its nonconference game against Notre Dame in Hoffman Estates on Saturday night. At halftime, the Cougars led the highly rated Dons 19-16. Solid defense, a patient offense and good shot selection were the norm for Conant. That didn’t last, though. Notre Dame came out in the second half with a swarming defense that led to turnovers and quick baskets in the Dons’ 46-32 win.

  • St. Viator’s Charlie Wood powers ahead in the varsity 200-yard freestyle, winning in 1.58.57 against Notre Dame at St. Viator on Thursday.

St. Viator has fun while making progress Jan 10, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Viator boys swimming coach Mary Ruffin is an outspoken advocate for her sport, but she recognizes some of the challenges that go with the territory. “It’s a sport that can have some monotony, with all the time you have to spend in the water training,” she said. “But I like this team — you can tell they’re having fun. You see them hanging together at the wall between sets, then somebody says something, and I see smiles. I can’t always tell what’s been said, but I know they’re enjoying themselves. That’s really important. “It’s hard work, so it’s important to remember that you’ve also got to have fun with it.” If winning is fun, St. Viator had plenty of it Thursday. The Lions hosted a Notre Dame program that’s just getting its feet wet and came away with decisive wins on both the varsity (78-15) and JV (68-12) levels.

The Dons (12-1) meet Niles North for the championship tonight at 8:45 p.m. Saturday. Serrano only scored 2 points, but they came at a key time. Carmel stayed with conference rival Notre Dame into the third quarter of their Wheeling Hardwood Classic second-round game Thursday, but a third-quarter blitz put the Corsairs into a hole from which they couldn’t recover. Carmel (5-5) saw a 26-all tie turn into a 41-28 deficit when the Dons (11-1) went to a zone press, scoring 8 points in a 23-second span in the third. For more than 40 years, the Rev. John Smyth was the face of Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, but those who worked with him knew who his driving force was: Loretta Mroz, his longtime assistant. She was the one who was organized and efficient."

  • What a rush: Williams, Lake Forest top Notre Dame Nov 9, 2012 12:00 AM
Lake Forest junior Geno Quaid certainly could sympathize with the members of the Notre Dame offensive line. After all, Quaid had to go up against teammate Trent Williams all through summer workouts, so he knew just how the Dons linemen felt when they tried to block Williams on Friday night during the Class 6A quarterfinal game in Niles. "I know it wasn't easy," Quaid said of his battles with Williams over the summer. "(Trent) was so hard to try and block, and you could see it tonight that he made it hard on Notre Dame, too." Williams busted through the offensive line of the No. 14 seeded Dons for a school record 7 sacks to help lead No. 10 seed Lake Forest to an impressive 31-19 victory and a trip to the state semifinals for the first time in school history. Notre Dame completed its season with a 7-5 mark.

James rushed for 268 yards and scored 6 touchdowns as the Dons defeated the Lions 49-20 in an East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup in Niles.

  • Carmel will rely on Sean Brennan on both offense and defense this season. He’s a three-year varsity player.
