  • Time runs out on Notre Dame as Stevenson survives close call Mar 10, 2015 11:02 PM
There was nothing that Notre Dame could do. And nothing that Stevenson had to do. What was for the most part a dramatic, spectacular and hotly-contested sectional semifinal between Notre Dame and Stevenson in Waukegan ended with a strange and surreal whimper on Tuesday. The Patriots looked about as dumbfounded as their counterparts from Notre Dame as the clock unceremoniously ran out on a 78-77 victory that propelled them into Friday’s sectional championship game in Waukegan against the winner of today’s semifinal between Lake Forest and Evanston.

  • Bogumil, Libertyville wrap up with loss at Notre Dame Mar 3, 2015 11:11 PM
During the final stages of Libertyville’s regional semifinal against host Notre Dame on Tuesday night, Scott Bogumil paced the sideline and kept looking at the scoreboard, knowing that it was going to be his final time coaching the Wildcats. And then it was over. No. 13 Libertyville lost 67-54 to fourth-seeded Notre Dame in Niles, earning the Dons a berth in Friday night’s Class 4A regional final. “It’s like a roller coaster that just stopped and they asked you to get off,” Bogumil said. “It’s like, ‘Do we have another ride?’ ” Bogumil’s 11th season ended with the Wildcats finishing 15-13. He concludes his run at LHS with a 139-155 record. Counting his years at Gordon Tech, his overall career mark was 267-225.

  • Mooney, ND deal St. Viator an ESCC setback Feb 13, 2015 10:22 PM
St. Viator picked a bad night to have a bad night. Hosting East Suburban Catholic Conference leader Notre Dame on Friday, the Lions were playing with the chance to move into a first-place tie with the Dons, but that was not to be. The combination of ice-cold shooting for three quarters and the hot hand of Notre Dame’s Joe Mooney were enough to send the Lions to a 58-41 defeat in Cahill Gym.

  • Shots don’t fall for Benet Jan 16, 2015 12:10 AM
It wasn’t going to take much — maybe just two straight baskets — for someone to take control between Notre Dame and Benet. But that meant someone had to score two straight baskets, something that proved immensely difficult in Thursday’s East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup in Niles. Notre Dame finally managed to do it in the final four minutes, scoring 7 straight points to pull out a rugged 46-43 victory over the visiting Redwings.

  • Wheeling title to McDaniel, Lake Park Dec 28, 2014 12:01 AM
With his team trailing 19-11 to Notre Dame with 1:26 left in the first quarter, Lake Park coach Josh Virostko thought his Lancers might be in for a long night. “They had us on the ropes. We were pressing too much and I think we were too hyped up,” said Virostko. “They were executing with every play they made. But then we scored two baskets at the end of the quarter to get back to 19-15. I knew we were back in the game.” The Lancers used a second-half surge after being tied at 29 to take down the Dons 62-52 in the championship game of the 41st annual Wheeling Hardwood Classic on Saturday night. Senior guard Marcus McDaniel, an all-tournament selection, provided the spark.

  • Notre Dame takes command, sinks Naperville Central Dec 26, 2014 11:45 PM
Naperville Central had everything under control going into the final quarter of its Friday night Wildcat Hardwood Classic semifinal against Notre Dame. The Redhawks had just surged ahead. They had their transition game in high gear. They were creating havoc on defense. And then Notre Dame (10-1) came out and got stops on four consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 straight points and rallying back from 31-26 down for a 48-41 win and a spot in Saturday’s 8:45 p.m. championship game against Lake Park. Naperville Central will play Fremd in the third-place game at 7:15 p.m., but right now, that feels hollow.

  • Mooney, Notre Dame subdue Prospect Dec 23, 2014 10:27 PM
When Notre Dame basketball coach Tom Les played for the Dons, he was known as a hard-nosed defensive player. To this day, he still preaches defense and is quick to take a player to task — even when it’s a top offensive player. The Dons had just watched a 32-22 lead shrink to 32-30 in a 1:30 span as Prospect guard Frankie Mack scored 8 straight of his 10 points in that run. Les called time out with :59 left in the quarter and made sure Joe Mooney got the message. Mooney responded after the time out with a steal and basket to put the 9-1 Dons back on track. Mooney scored 36 points as Notre Dame got past stubborn Prospect 49-42 at Wheeling’s 37th annual Hardwood Classic. Notre Dame moves into Friday’s semifinal against Naperville Central, while Prospect goes to the winner’s consolation bracket against Deerfield.

  • IHSA: Concussion suit to create football ‘have-nots’ Dec 5, 2014 6:31 PM
The nation’s first high school sports governing body to face a class-action concussions lawsuit warned Friday the legal action could result in wealthier schools keeping their football programs and poorer ones eliminating them. “If you are going to do that, what you are going to have is some very poor, depressed areas that are going to eliminate football,” said Marty Hickman, director of the Illinois High School Association. “The haves are going to continue to have it and the have-nots are not going to have it.”

  • Ex-suburban high school athlete files concussion lawsuit Nov 29, 2014 5:28 PM
The IHSA did not have concussion protocols in place, putting former Notre Dame College Prep quarterback Daniel Bukal and other high school players at risk, and those protocols remain deficient, a new lawsuit alleges. It calls on the Bloomington-based IHSA to tighten its rules and regulations regarding head injuries at the 800 high schools it oversees.

Tyler Johnston can leave you breathless. Just ask his St. Viator coaches and teammates. Just ask any opposition coach or player. Just ask him. Johnston, despite turnovers and miscues that might have disheartened a team emotionally or otherwise killed its chances to win, somehow picked himself up, threw 3 improbable touchdown passes and helped St. Viator register a crucial 21-14 win at Nore Dame, a win that keeps the Lions’ playoff torch brightly lit.

  • Defense stellar as Bartlett shuts out Notre Dame Sep 6, 2014 12:08 AM
Although it’s stating the obvious, Niles Notre Dame football coach Mike Hennessey encapsulated Friday’s night nonconference game between visiting Bartlett and the Dons pretty well. “You can’t win games if you don’t score points,” Hennessey said. And the Dons (1-1) didn’t score as the Hawks’ (1-1) defense got the shutout allowing Alex Triantos’ 21-yard field goal with 38.2 seconds left in the first half to hold up in a 3-0 victory.

  • Benet hangs tough in ESCC May 7, 2014 10:26 PM
Sweeps are tough to come by in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Benet’s baseball team wasn’t about to let it happen to them on Wednesday. The Redwings pulled away late in a 6-2 victory over Notre Dame in Lisle, avenging a loss to the Dons just two days earlier.

  • Falotico, St. Viator tune up for postseason run Feb 14, 2014 10:38 PM
With boys basketball teams in the home stretch of the regular season, it’s time to start fine-tuning for the upcoming state playoffs. For St. Viator, it doesn’t look like there’s a whole lot of adjusting left. A key ingredient that is now back in place is senior Mark Falotico. After not playing while nursing a foot injury until early January, Falotico is now at full strength. That gives the Lions more firepower. Notre Dame can attest to that, as the Lions rolled in Niles 80-58 in an East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup.
