    Students and staff from Northwest Suburban High School District 214 hosted the first Mobile Computing Showcase this week to share their experiences with teachers and administrators from more than 30 districts around Illinois looking for the best ways to integrate new technology in the classroom. District 214 for two years has been running pilot programs using tablet computers at all six of its high schools, and it has discussed the idea of someday having a tablet computer for each of the district's more than 12,000 students.

    A few measures approved by the Northwest Suburban High School District 214 board of education on Thursday will change the way students in the district's six high schools get breakfast and snacks and how much they have to pay. The cost of breakfast is going up, and the district will be buying vending machines instead of renting them.

Kathy Christenson, an English teacher at Hersey for 13 years who died of cancer last fall. "The English department thought it would be most appropriate to have something outdoors, because she was an adventurer, and something that spoke to her experience as an English teacher," said Lara Becker, an English teacher at Hersey and a colleague of Christenson's.

    Township High School District 214s recommended instructional materials and media is available for public viewing from May 15 through May 28. Students will use the adopted materials and textbooks in the context of an approved course, and the same materials and textbooks will be used wherever the course is taught throughout the school district.

    After nearly six months of meetings between the district and teachers union, North Suburban High School District 214 passed a new staff professional development and evaluation plan on Thursday that includes student performance in teacher evaluations. The new plan comes in advance of state legislation that goes into effect in June requiring all districts to make certain changes to the teacher evaluation, said Superintendent Dave Schuler.

    Stevenson High School will host a public forum about adolescent drug use from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9. Stevenson has held similar forums each of the past few years, always in the spring to coincide with prom season, spokesman Jim Conrey said. Its a pretty fortuitous time to talk about these things, he said.

    Every Carmel Catholic High School student will start the 2012-13 term with a personal tablet computer, officials announced Monday. The campuswide, high-tech effort is the first of its kind at any school in Lake County and among the first in the Chicago area. Principal Lynne Strutzel said in a news release. "There is no question that this technology initiative is essential for our students," Principal Lynne Strutzel said in a news release.

    A Stevenson High School dean who resigned last week sent texts to a student the teen found "weird" and made him feel uncomfortable, police reports obtained by the Daily Herald show. The messages, exchanged over several months, were not criminal in nature or overtly sexual, Lincolnshire police said. No charges have been filed, and none are planned.
