Prospect gymnast finds 'place that fits' despite challenges Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Jill Sevilla won't be competing for Prospect High School when the girls gymnastics state championships open Friday, but she's already a winner. Jill, who has Down syndrome, has been on the junior varsity team this season, and event competed in a match earlier in the year. “The girls that are less experienced pick an event to focus on, and Jill picked floor routine,” says her coach, Sara Koshelev. “We worked with her to improve her jumps and some tumbling passes.”

In fall 2010, Harper College and its feeder high school districts formed an unprecedented partnership to shrink student success gaps and better prepare students for career and college readiness. More than halfway through the four-year pilot program, leaders believe they're onto something. "We think we have a model worth emulating," Harper President Ken Ender said of the Northwest Educational Council for Student Success.

"It demonstrates District 214's transparency and responsible fiscal spending in a volatile economic climate," said Debra Parenti, the district's chief finance person.

The Northwest Suburban High School District 214 school board approved school and district improvement plans as required under the No Child Left Behind Act for failing to make adequate yearly progress two or more consecutive years. “We’re working hard to provide the best opportunities for our students,” said Rosemary Gonzalez-Pinnick, associate superintendent for educational services. “D’s and F’s are down, our ACT scores are up. Do we have students who are not where they should be? Yes, but that’s what the intervention strategies are for.”

Buffalo Grove High School is proud to announce that four of its students recently received the 25th annual Cook County Sheriff’s Youth Service Medal of Honor Award for contributing at least 100 hours of volunteer service to their communities during the previous year. Buffalo Grove seniors Jamie Hillner of Arlington Heights and Nisa Khan of Buffalo Grove (who were present at the ceremony), and Michael Maley of Arlington Heights, and Christopher Szewczyk of Buffalo Grove were all awarded the prestigious honor for their outstanding efforts.

District 214 partners with Robert Morris University to upgrade facilities Jan 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Two facilities at Township High School District 214’s Forest View Educational Center in Arlington Heights are being upgraded thanks to a recently approved Partnership Agreement with Robert Morris University. The school board approved the agreement at its Jan. 13 meeting, while applauding the administration for finding a partner to help defray costs. This latest agreement supersedes the one already in existence between the two organizations.

Elk Grove grad remains in critical condition after crash Jan 9, 2013 12:00 AM
An Elk Grove High School graduate was in a post-surgical induced coma Wednesday evening, after she was struck by a car on the Quincy University campus Monday, according to friends. Shannon L. Peters, 19, of Elk Grove Village, a freshman at Quincy, sustained serious head injuries when a vehicle hit her at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The devil is in the details for Northwest suburban school officials who met Saturday with Rep. David Harris to talk about shifting some pension costs from the state to the schools. School officials questioned how much they will have to pay, how they will get the money, and whether the Legislature will keep pushing more costs on them in future years.

A high school football team on Chicago's Northwest Side is benefiting from a donation made by Barrington High School football coach Joe Sanchez. Cleats, practice jerseys and pads are just a few of the items that the 52 players at Kelvyn Park High School football are putting to use. "(Barrington High School's) practice jerseys ... were better than our game jerseys," the Kelvyn Park coach says.
