    David Brown scored 26 points, hitting 5 of 8 from 3-point range, as Western Michigan held on for a 74-71 win over Northern Illinois on Sunday. Western Michigan (14-8, 7-3 Mid-American) led by as many as 16 in the second half and was up by 12 with less than 6 minutes to play but Northern Illinois went on an 11-1 run to come within 71-69 with 2:04 left. Missed free throws by Western Michigan gave Northern Illinois (10-12, 4-6) chances to tie the game in the waning seconds but the Huskies missed a pair of 3-pointers, including a potential game-tying 3 at the buzzer by Aaric Armstead. Shayne Whittington added 15 points and Connar Tava scored 12 for Western Michigan, which shot 52.8 percent from the field and has now won nine straight over Northern Illinois. Jordan Threloff led the Huskies with 16 points.

    After a second consecutive 12-win season, Northern Illinois head football coach Rod Carey came away with 31 recruits for its 2014 class. Drawing from 11 states, NIU’s list includes 15 defensive players, 14 offensive players and two specialists. NIU added nine recruits from Illinois, seven from Wisconsin and five from Florida to lead the class.

    Aaric Armstead scored 14 points and Jordan Threloff added 13 as Northern Illinois edged Ball State 67-65 in overtime Saturday. Travon Baker made 1 of 2 free throws with 17 seconds left to put Northern Illinois up 67-65, and Chris Bond’s shot with 3 seconds remaining missed as the Huskies (9-11, 3-5 Mid-American) held on. Armstead had a steal with 18 seconds left, setting up Baker’s free throw attempts. Baker tied the game at 60 on a 3-pointer with 9 seconds remaining in regulation, and Bond’s runner at the buzzer missed. Ball State (4-15, 1-7) led by 15 in the first half and 10 in the second half before the Huskies came back. Northern Illinois took its first lead since the game’s opening minutes at 55-54 with under 4 minutes to go, setting up a tight finish. Bond scored 16 while Jesse Berry had 13 and Zavier Turner added 11.

    Travon Baker made two free throws with 5.2 seconds left to lift Northern Illinois to a 50-49 victory over Kent State Wednesday night. Devareaux Manley made two free throws with 11.2 seconds remaining to put the Golden Flashes (11-9, 2-5 Mid-American) up by a point. But Baker was then fouled attempting a layup.

    Javon McCrea’s 20 points and big second half Saturday helped Buffalo hold off a surging Northern Illinois for a 75-67 win. McCrea scored 13 points in the second half, including a dunk that broke a 48-48 tie to give Buffalo (10-6, 4-2 Mid-American) a lead they never relinquished. Joshua Freelove scored 13 points and Will Regan added 12 for Buffalo.

    Justin Drummond scored 24 points with 11 rebounds to lift Toledo over Northern Illinois 77-68 on Wednesday. Toledo (16-2, 4-1 Mid-American) trailed by three at 16-13 after Northern Illinois’ Aksel Bolin drilled a 3-pointer. The Rockets scored the next six points, including a layup and pair of free throws by Drummond, en route to a 34-26 lead at the break.

    Nick Kellogg scored 16 points, Maurice Ndour added 10 and Ohio cruised to a 65-46 victory Saturday night over Northern Illinois. Down 25-24 at the break, Ohio opened the second half with a 23-12 run to take a 47-37 lead with 12:18 remaining. Northern Illinois then went nearly nine minutes without scoring, allowing the Bobcats to stretch their lead to 62-40 with 3:47 left.

Besides the two turnovers, Lynch was held to just 39 yards rushing, keeping him from becoming keeping him from becoming the first major college player to rush for 2,000 yards and pass for 2,000 yards in the same season.

    Jordan Lynch will make a run at history Thursday night when he suits up for the final time for No. 24 Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl against Utah State. Lynch already owns the major college record for yards rushing for a quarterback with 1,881. With 119 yards, he can become the first player to rush for 2,000 yards and throw for 2,000. “I’m just really proud of him and wish I had him for about 10 more years, but we don’t,” NIU coach Rod Carey said.
