Northern Illinois sophomore Abdel Nader, a Niles North grad, was named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday. Nader averaged 22.5 points and 11.0 rebounds as the Huskies split a pair of contests against Kent State and Toledo.

Abdel Nader's go-ahead jumper with 5 seconds left sealed the deal for Northern Illinois, who held off Kent State 67-65 on Wednesday night. Northern Illinois (5-14, 3-4 MAC) led 63-54 with 2:28 remaining in the game, but the Golden Flashes used an 11-2 run capped off by Devareaux Manley's 3-pointer to tie it at 65 with 31 seconds left.

After a record-setting season that included the first BCS appearance in MAC history, Northern Illinois announced its 2013 nonconference schedule and its lineup of MAC opponents for next season. Northern Illinois, the defending champions of the Mid-American Conference, will play five games in Huskie Stadium in 2013, beginning with the home opener Sept. 21 versus Eastern Illinois. The Huskies’ nonconference schedule begins with a rematch versus Iowa in the 2013 season opener on Aug. 31 in Iowa City.

While NIU head coach Rod Carey was too upset with the outcome after the game to put the loss into perspective, his star quarterback faced the postgame questions like he did opposing defenses: head on. "We stuck around with them for a little bit, and we competed with them and we played hard," said Jordan Lynch after the 31-10 Orange Bowl defeat. "We had a lot of young guys on our team, and I feel like we can carry this over until next year. "It's just a learning experience."

It's not all doom and gloom for Northern Illinois despite Tuesday's 31-10 loss to Florida State in the Orange Bowl. The Huskies are losing only eight starters from a team that finished 12-2, won the Mid-American Conference for a second straight year and went to a BCS bowl for the first time in school history — three on offense and five on defense.

Anxious to avoid an Orange Bowl shocker, the Florida State Seminoles kept getting tricked. An onside kick fooled them, as did a fake punt, and a pooch punt by Northern Illinois' star quarterback. But the final score was no surprise. Florida State had too much speed and depth for the Huskies and pulled away for a 31-10 victory Tuesday night. "Definitely the best defense we played all year," Huskies QB Jordan Lynch said.

Fans celebrate Northwestern's win, bear with NIU loss Jan 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Suburbanites traveled to Florida for Northwestern's Gator Bowl matchup against Mississippi State and Northern Illinois University's faceoff with Florida State University. Some made the day-long drive while others flew and whether their teams won or lost, fans were glad to be there.
