    In the end, Luke Potnick preferred to compete at the Division I level in college basketball. As much as anything, that drove the Buffalo Grove standout guard's decision to join the program at Northern Illinois as a preferred walk-on. "Division I was always exactly where I thought I would go," said Potnick. "I think it fits the way I like to compete." That competitive nature was obvious to Potnick's opponents. He was named Mid-Suburban East player of the year after averaging 21.4 points and canning 73 3-pointers while coming up with 3.1 assists per game. Potnick also earned Daily Herald all-area team honors.

Jeff Compher, associate vice president and director of athletics at NIU for the last five years, is the new athletics director at East Carolina University. Compher was introduced Wednesday during a news conference at the Murphy Center on East Carolina's campus, according to a report by the ECU News Bureau.

    Coming off the most successful season in school history, three-straight years with 11 wins or more and back-to-back Mid-American Conference Championships, Northern Illinois will face one of its most challenging schedules in recent years when it opens the 2013 season. The Huskies’ schedule will take them on the road for four of their first five games next fall. With just five home games at Huskie Stadium, where NIU has won 21 straight games, NIU will be tested early before finishing with a MAC West midweek run in November featuring consecutive contests against Ball State, Toledo and Western Michigan.

    The Northern Star Hall of Fame will welcome its newest inductees this weekend, and Daily Herald sports writer Tim Sassone will be honored along with six other members of the 2013 class at ceremonies on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb. Sassone, who joined the Daily Herald in 1984, is the dean of Chicago hockey writers. He also has covered the World Series, the Ryder Cup and many other sporting events for the newspaper.
