NIU police chief put on leave amid sex assault scandalNov 10, 2012 12:00 AM
Northern Illinois University Police Chief Donald Grady on Saturday was placed on administrative leave after a court found the department took part in an "egregious" and "purposeful hiding of information" in handling a sexual assault case. Grady will be on leave pending the finalization of charges and disciplinary action.

Kickoff set for NIU-Toledo game on ESPN2 Nov 7, 2012 12:00 AM
Northern Illinois and Toledo will have a national audience when the two MAC football powers meet next Wednesday, Nov. 14, at at Huskie Stadium will. Officials for ESPN2 and the Mid-American Conference Office announced the kickoff time will be 8 p.m. The Huskies plan to honor their 2012 seniors, the winningest class in school history, and hold their annual "Black Out" game with all NIU fans encouraged to wear black.

Palatine grad found dead at NIU fraternityNov 2, 2012 12:00 AM
A 19-year-old Palatine teen who just started his freshman year at Northern Illinois University was found dead in an off-campus fraternity house Friday morning, authorities said. David R. Bogenberger, who graduated from Palatine High School in June, was found unresponsive in a bed at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at 10:14 a.m.

For NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch, the numbers don't lie. But whether those gaudy numbers, which include leading the nation in total offense with 3,169 yards, can get him in the Heisman Trophy mix remains to be seen. "I think to be the Heisman winner, you have to do everything. You've got to be almost perfect," said NIU coach Dave Doeren. "All he needs to do is continue to do what he's doing, win games, be productive, and not make mistakes."

It’s Western Michigan’s turn to find a way to stop NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch. So far it’s a task no team has been able to pull off. Lynch, the junior from Mt. Carmel High School, ranks first in the nation in total yards with 2,759 and is second in rushing with 1,049 yards. He ran for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns and threw for 2 more scores in last week’s 37-7 rout of Akron. The Huskies (7-1, 4-0) play at Western Michigan (3-5, 1-3) on Saturday (11 a.m. ESPN3.com and WSCR 670-AM).

NIU coach Dave Doeren knew quarterback Jordan Lynch was going to be this good. Lynch, the junior from Mt. Carmel High School, is putting up enough impressive numbers for the 6-1 Huskies that he was added to the Manning Watch list Friday for the nation's top quarterbacks. "I had really high expectations of him," Doeren said. "I didn't know if it would be this year or next year because of the youth of our offensive line and just the unknowns at that position."

Elburn man among 9 charged in scheme at NIU Oct 16, 2012 12:00 AM
An Elburn man is among nine current or former Northern Illinois University employees charged with using a secret bank account to funnel away thousands of dollars for themselves. DeKalb County State’s Attorney Clay Campbell announced the charges Tuesday against the nine individuals as part of an ongoing “coffee fund” investigation at the DeKalb school.

orthern Illinois cornerback Marlon Moore, a true freshman from Mobile, Ala., was named Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday. Moore earned the honor after intercepting 2 passes and making 5 tackles (4 solo) Saturday in NIU's 45-3 win over Buffalo at Huskie Stadium. He picked off passes on successive drives in the third quarter as the Northern Illinois defense held an opponent without a touchdown for the first time in 22 games (since Nov. 26, 2010).

NIU honors Rozner as Distinguished Alumni Oct 13, 2012 12:00 AM
After leaving Northern Illinois University in 1984 with a degree in journalism, award-winning sports writer and columnist Barry Rozner never strayed too far from his alma mater after launching his career with the Daily Herald. Friday night in DeKalb, Rozner was among 11 individuals (alumni, faculty and staff members) presented with Distinguished Alumni Awards by Christopher McCord, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at NIU. “I’m very grateful to NIU for even considering me for this great honor,” Rozner said. “It was a terrific evening and a very humbling experience, but certainly more than I bargained for emotionally."

NIU’s Peters stepping down after 13 yearsOct 11, 2012 12:00 AM
Longtime Northern Illinois University President John Peters is stepping down at the end of the school year. The 67-year-old Peters' retirement comes after 13 years at the helm of the DeKalb-based university. Peters will be remembered for the growth of the college during his tenure as well as his leadership in the wake of a deadly shooting rampage on Feb. 14, 2008.

Northern Illinois University says fall enrollment is down by almost 5 percent but its incoming freshman class is larger than last year's. The university said Wednesday that overall enrollment is down to 21,869 students. New freshman enrollment is up 2.9 percent to 2,664.
