Palatine family's suit against fraternity dismissed

A judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed against a fraternity by the family of a Northern Illinois University student from Palatine who died after a night of heavy drinking.

Needing one more win for a second straight Mid-American Conference title, Bowling Green was upstaged by a familiar rival with a fast-paced offense of its own. Drew Hare threw for two touchdowns and ran for one, and Northern Illinois wrested the MAC crown from Bowling Green in emphatic fashion Friday night, beating the Falcons 51-17. The Huskies set MAC championship game records for points and margin of victory. "They left no doubt in everyone's mind who the best football team in the conference is this year," Bowling Green coach Dino Babers said.

A delegation of suburban college presidents will meet with President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, and Vice President Joe Biden Thursday to talk about increasing the numbers of students completing college. Northern Illinois University President Douglas Baker is heading up the delegation, which includes Elgin Community College President David Sam, who is representing community colleges as part of the Northern Illinois Regional P-20 Network at the White House College Opportunity Summit in Washington, D.C.
Harper, CLC both going 100% smoke-free Jan. 1

Students, employees and even casual visitors won't be allowed to smoke on college campuses starting next summer. But Harper College and the College of Lake County will ban tobacco on campus starting Jan. 1. "I think that this is going to be a surprise for many people, and I think it is going to take time for people to understand how this is working," says Janet Mason, who's managing the rules at College of Lake County.
Elgin man named Illinois Professor of the Year

Longtime Northern Illinois University professor Dan Gebo, of Elgin, has been named the 2014 Illinois Professor of the Year. Among his accomplishments is leading research teams that discovered the world's smallest primate fossil in 2000, a 55 million-year-old, thumb-length primate in China, and the oldest primate skeleton in 2013, dating back 60 million years.
NIU hangs on to beat Ohio 21-14

Drew Hare threw an 18-yard touchdown strike to a wide open Chad Beebe in the end zone with 6 minutes left, and Northern Illinois held on to beat Ohio 21-14 on Tuesday night. Hare's game-winning TD pass capped an 8-play, 70-yard drive for the Huskies (9-2, 6-1 Mid-American Conference).
Stingily runs for 2 TDs, NIU tops Toledo

Cameron Stingily ran for a pair of second-half touchdowns to help Northern Illinois move into a 1st-place tie in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference with a 27-24 win over Toledo on Tuesday night. Northern Illinois (8-2, 5-1) has won four consecutive division titles.
Back to Antarctica, a little delayed, for NIU scientists

Two NIU professors from Elburn are happy their research on what's happening beneath Antarctica's ice sheets and shelves is back on track this year, after the federal government shutdown last fall threw a big monkey wrench in their plans.

The Northern Illinois University Steel Band will be in concert Nov. 9 in Arlington Heights, the third concert of the 2014-15 season for the Northwest Suburban Community Concert Association in partnership with District 214 Community Education.
