    Drugmakers AbbVie, of North Chicago, and Shire are in detailed talks about a possible combination after AbbVie once again raised the deal price and gave Shire shareholders a bigger stake in the new company. Shire says AbbVie is now offering a cash-stock combination valued at 53.20 British pounds ($91.10) for each share of Shire, which is headquartered on the British island of Jersey.

    The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center’s Animal Care and Control Program is offering a low-cost pet vaccination clinic on Saturday, June 28, from 9 a.m. until noon in North Chicago. The event will take place behind the Community Recreational Center at 1730 Lewis Ave. Costs are as follows: For Pets Spayed/Neutered One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag: $20.00 One-year rabies vaccination, distemper and Lake County tag: $25.00 Distemper complex only: $10.00 Microchip: $15.00 For Pets Not Spayed/Neutered One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag: $60.00 One-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper: $65.00 Distemper complex only: $10.00 Microchip: $15.00 This clinic provides a convenient and affordable way for Lake County residents to keep pets up to date with their shots and rabies tags. Pets will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. All animals brought to a clinic must be at least four months old. Dogs must be leashed and cats placed in carriers. Only cash will be accepted on site. The Health Department’s Animal Care and Control Program tracks pet vaccinations and rabies tags, investigates animal bites and complaints of nuisance and neglect, as well as impounds stray animals.     Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim said Friday he would immediately request the release of a Chicago man convicted of murder in 2004 — if evidence shows he is innocent. However, Nerheim said it is too soon to know if the unexpected match between DNA recovered at the 1992 murder of 11-year-old Holly Staker in Waukegan and DNA recovered from a separate 2000 attack in North Chicago, exonerates Marvin Williford.

    A prominent resource center for homeless people in Lake County is moving, officials announced. The PADS Lake County organization is closing its daytime center in North Chicago and opening a facility in Waukegan. The new center will be at 1800 Grand Ave., one block east of Lewis Avenue. The transition should occur this summer, but an exact date hasn’t been determined yet.
