  • Looks like a win for Travlos, Lake Zurich Nov 25, 2014 10:39 PM
Lake Zurich senior Mike Travlos simply couldn’t help himself. As he drove toward the basket in the Bears second round game of the Grant Thanksgiving Tournament, he casually glanced at the scoreboard to see he was just shy of a career high in points. Indeed, that magic number of 30 was just calling out to him. “To be honest, I did look,” Travlos said later. “I have never broken 30 before, and I kind of wanted it.” Style points was about the only thing missing for the Bears. Travlos ended up tying his career-best with 29 points to lead Lake Zurich to an impressive 61-48 win over North Chicago Tuesday night.

  • Special victory for Antioch Oct 11, 2014 9:05 PM
When Antioch’s football team has had its best seasons, it’s been because of all three phases of the game — offense, defense and special teams. When the Sequoits have struggled in the past, the special teams haven’t been very special. This season, the Sequoits’ special teams have been special. Junior Griffin Hill has been a big reason why, while Antioch has also wreaked havoc in the punting game with as many as four blocked punts this season. So when both Hill and the special teams got revved up on a homecoming Saturday at North Chicago, the already overmatched Warhawks were up against it in the North Suburban Prairie Division game. Hill took the opening kick 84 yards for the touchdown and added 3 rushing touchdowns, as the Sequoits routed winless North Chicago 72-7. With its sixth win on the season, Antioch (6-1, 4-0) clinched a playoff berth for the fifth time since Brian Glashagel took over as head coach in 2007.

The senior was in uniform for Tuesday night’s Class 3A Hoffman Estates supersectional, and when the game was on the line, Greer was on the court. He made the most of his opportunity. Greer sank a 3-pointer with three seconds left on the clock — his only basket of the night — lifting Orr to a 71-68 win over North Chicago. Orr (25-4) will meet Morgan Park at 2:15 p.m. Friday in a state semifinal at the Civic Center in Peoria.

He showed he could dish out shots, too, leading the Rams with 22 points and 10 rebounds — but it wasn’t enough for the Rams on this evening. Grayslake Central stayed close to North Chicago for three quarters before the top-seeded Warhawks prevailed over the No. 8 Rams 71-53 in Class 3A regional championship play in Grayslake.

  • Good times continue for NSC champ Stevenson Feb 26, 2014 11:28 PM
Even “Mr. Crabby Pants” couldn’t be too crabby on Wednesday night. What was there to growl or groan about? Behind yet another spectacular performance by junior guard Jalen Brunson, Stevenson was in top form (or pretty darn close to it) in mowing down host North Chicago 98-68 in front of a packed gym in the North Suburban Conference boys basketball championship game. “Well, we could have rebounded better, and in the first half, we didn’t do defensive transition real well,” said Stevenson coach Pat Ambrose, who calls himself Mr. Crabby Pants for his never-satisfied mentality. “But you know me, I’m never entirely happy. I would say we were clicking, but maybe not on all cylinders.” The Warhawks, who have now lost to Stevenson in the conference title game for two years in a row, may argue otherwise. They watched Stevenson (26-1) have its way on their home floor. The Patriots, who hit 64 percent of their shots from the field, got a game-high 39 points (including three 3-pointers) from Brunson.
