  • Greer’s clutch effort helps Orr deny North Chicago Mar 18, 2014 11:17 PM
Shot in the leg less than two weeks ago, Chicago Orr basketball player Tyquone Greer was expected to be done for the season. The senior was in uniform for Tuesday night’s Class 3A Hoffman Estates supersectional, and when the game was on the line, Greer was on the court. He made the most of his opportunity. Greer sank a 3-pointer with three seconds left on the clock — his only basket of the night — lifting Orr to a 71-68 win over North Chicago. Orr (25-4) will meet Morgan Park at 2:15 p.m. Friday in a state semifinal at the Civic Center in Peoria.

  • North Chicago's spurt sinks Carmel Mar 14, 2014 11:04 PM
North Chicago used a quick 16-2 run late in the third quarter to turn the game around. The Warhawks went on to record a 79-70 victory over Carmel for the championship of the Class 3A Antioch sectional. North Chicago won its sixth sectional title in the last seven years.

The Division I-bound duo of Kurt Hall (Toledo) and JayQuan McCloud (Murray State) scored 20 and 16 points, respectively, as top-seeded North Chicago (24-5) advanced to Friday’s 7 p.m. sectional final against the winner of tonight’s game between No. 3 Carmel Catholic and No. 2 Uplift.

  • North Chicago stops Grayslake Central Mar 7, 2014 11:15 PM
Alex Lennartz was one of several Grayslake Central seniors who didn’t want to their seasons come to and end on Friday night. Lennartz had been through a lot this year, including a broken nose and a concussion. He showed he could dish out shots, too, leading the Rams with 22 points and 10 rebounds — but it wasn’t enough for the Rams on this evening. Grayslake Central stayed close to North Chicago for three quarters before the top-seeded Warhawks prevailed over the No. 8 Rams 71-53 in Class 3A regional championship play in Grayslake.

  • Good times continue for NSC champ Stevenson Feb 26, 2014 11:28 PM
Even “Mr. Crabby Pants” couldn’t be too crabby on Wednesday night. What was there to growl or groan about? Behind yet another spectacular performance by junior guard Jalen Brunson, Stevenson was in top form (or pretty darn close to it) in mowing down host North Chicago 98-68 in front of a packed gym in the North Suburban Conference boys basketball championship game. “Well, we could have rebounded better, and in the first half, we didn’t do defensive transition real well,” said Stevenson coach Pat Ambrose, who calls himself Mr. Crabby Pants for his never-satisfied mentality. “But you know me, I’m never entirely happy. I would say we were clicking, but maybe not on all cylinders.” The Warhawks, who have now lost to Stevenson in the conference title game for two years in a row, may argue otherwise. They watched Stevenson (26-1) have its way on their home floor. The Patriots, who hit 64 percent of their shots from the field, got a game-high 39 points (including three 3-pointers) from Brunson.

  • Images: Vernon Hills vs. North Chicago girls basketball Feb 24, 2014 9:25 PM
The Vernon Hills Cougars faced the North Chicago Warhawks for girls basketball action at Monday's Ridgewood High School Class 3A sectional semifinal game in Norridge.

  • This one adds up to a regulation win for Vernon Hills Feb 24, 2014 11:05 PM
Always the math teacher, coach Paul Brettner figured since his Vernon Hills girls basketball team and North Chicago averaged two overtime periods in two regular-season games, a third contest would yield a similar result. “I figured that’s where we were headed,” Brettner said. Considering how clutch Sydney Smith and Lauren Webb have been in their four-year varsity careers, it figures that Vernon Hills is headed to another Class 3A sectional final. Behind Smith’s game-high 29 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals, 3 blocks and 3 assists and Webb’s 23 points and 5 boards, top-seeded Vernon Hills outlasted No. 4 North Chicago 66-56 at Ridgewood in another tightly contested battle between the two North Suburban Conference Prairie Division squads. Vernon Hills (25-5) will seek its third sectional championship in a row Thursday at 7 p.m. when it faces No. 3 Carmel (23-8) at Ridgewood.

  • North Chicago stops Grayslake C. Feb 22, 2014 12:14 AM
North Chicago’s girls basketball team dominated Grayslake Central in the fourth quarter and went on to post a 57-34 win in the Warhawks’ Class 3A regional final Friday night. North Chicago outscored the Rams 22-3 in the fourth. The Warhawks (19-9) will travel to Ridgewood to play Vernon Hills in the sectional semifinals at 6 p.m. Monday. Grayslake Central, which was led by Morgan Dahlstrom’s 15 points, finished 19-11.

  • Larkin makes it 9 straight Feb 15, 2014 11:40 PM
Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter got the close game he expected Saturday night against North Chicago. The unexpected part was the way things happened down the stretch as the Royals (23-3) fought off the state’s sixth-ranked Class 3A Warhawks (20-4) 79-76 during Kaneland’s inaugural Day and Knight of Basketball in Maple Park.

  • North Chicago nixes Warren Feb 11, 2014 11:26 PM
The comeback proved successful. Unfortunately for Warren’s boys basketball team, its comeback against visiting North Chicago was not as good as Adrian Deere’s. Three nights after missing the final three quarters of the Blue Devils’ loss at Lake Zurich, after tweaking his right knee, Deere was in the starting lineup Tuesday for his team’s North Suburban Conference crossover. The senior guard led all scorers with a career-high-tying 26 points, but his effort wasn’t enough, as North Chicago pulled out a 76-65 win.

  • Vernon Hills to defend Prairie title Feb 7, 2014 11:58 PM
Vernon Hills’ girls basketball team will defend its North Suburban Conference championship after holding off host Grant 59-46 in the two teams’ NSC Prairie Division finale Friday night. The Cougars (21-5) finished 10-2 in the NSC Prairie, tying Antioch for the championship. By virtue of beating the Sequoits twice in as many games, Vernon Hills will play in the conference championship for the third year in a row.

  • Yarbrough’s milestone night helps Z-B to victory Feb 4, 2014 11:13 PM
It was a record-setting night on multiple levels at Mundelein. Needing 30 points to catch former Deerfield star Ryan Hogan and become the all-time leading boys basketball scorer in Lake County history, Zion-Benton senior forward Milik Yarbrough scored 32 points to lead the Zee-Bees to a 70-64 win over the Mustangs in North Suburban Lake Division action Tuesday night.

  • North Chicago survives test from Vernon Hills Feb 1, 2014 11:24 PM
Three nights after Grant’s boys basketball team nearly upset North Chicago, Vernon Hills nearly did the same Saturday. The Cougars missed what would have been a game-winning 3-pointer, and host North Chicago escaped with a 72-70 win in North Suburban Prairie Division action.

  • North Chicago turns back Grant Jan 29, 2014 11:33 PM
Grant’s boys basketball team flirted with an upset Wednesday night. The Bulldogs were tied with host North Chicago 60-60 with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Warhawks prevailed 85-79.
