North Chicago stops Carmel Mar 8, 2013 12:00 AM
His team's feel-good season had just ended, but when Carmel Catholic basketball coach Tim Bowen reflected, he couldn't help but feel fabulous for senior starting guard Greg Edkins. The Corsairs will miss Edkins. Again. After missing out on his junior season to take some time off from the game, Edkins wasn't going to miss out on what turned out to be one of the best seasons in more than two decades for Carmel. The Cinderellas of this years's state tournament in Lake County, the sixth-seeded Corsairs played top-seeded North Chicago tough for four quarters before losing 63-46 in the Class 3A Antioch sectional final Friday night.

Kohler’s OT block saves Lakes win Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Some rejections end in tears. Jake Kohler’s certainly did on Friday night. The Lakes senior guard came up with the biggest rejection of his career when he blocked a driving layup attempt by North Chicago in the final seconds of an overtime battle for first place in the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division. The defensive stand sealed the Eagles’ frenetic 67-66 victory over visiting North Chicago in front of a packed gym in Lake Villa.

North Chicago rises up against Vernon Hills Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Even the distractions that come with senior night and the final home game of the season couldn't derail the rolling train that is the North Chicago boys basketball team. Still, Warhawks coach Gerald Coleman was still concerned. "There can be a lot of distractions with the final home game and senior night," Coleman said. "But I was glad that we got a chance for all the seniors to play, and play at a high level." The usual starting five that includes three Division I recruits in Kurt Hall, JayQuan McCloud, and JaVairius Amos-Mays took a back seat to the Warhawk seniors Saturday night in a North Suburban Prairie Division contest with Vernon Hills. The reserves didn't miss a beat. The senior five put the game in good hands for the Warhawks with an 18-7 lead after one quarter and North Chicago cruised to an 86-51 win over the Cougars.

North Chicago charges past Grant Nov 30, 2012 12:00 AM
Ryan Noda put forth his best defensive effort for Grant's boys basketball team, taking charges and forcing turnovers several times in the first half on Friday night. But it wasn't close to enough against North Chicago, whose quickness, depth and overall ability were more than Grant could handle in a 92-47 loss in a North Suburban Prairie Division opener in Fox Lake.

North Chicago rises to the task vs. Mundelein Nov 24, 2012 12:00 AM
Led by tourney MVP JaVairius Amos-Mays and fellow all-tournament pick Kurt Hall, North Chicago limited Mundelein to 18 second-half points Saturday and rallied for a 75-58 win. The Warhawks’ victory capped a 5-0 showing in the tournament, which was co-hosted by Mundelein and Warren.

Warren falls short despite Gillespie Nov 21, 2012 12:00 AM
It's still so early in the boys basketball season; sometimes it's hard to figure out who will play the different roles on teams. That's obviously a concern of first-year head coach Ryan Webber and the Warren basketball team. On Wednesday night in the Warren gym, Webber watched his young Blue Devils fall behind visiting North Chicago by as many as 18 points early in the fourth quarter and then one of those mystery juniors started firing up 3-pointers. Was a star born on this night by the name of Eric Gillespie? All 5-foot-7 of him? Gillespie scored a career-high 26 points. North Chicago's lead shrunk to 7 points but the Warhawks held on to post a 69-57 win in the Mundelein/Warren boys varsity Thanksgiving Tournament.

Lakes delights with big defensive effort Oct 19, 2012 12:00 AM
The consensus for Lakes heading into Friday night's first-place showdown with visiting North Chicago was that its defense wasn't being respected enough. Never mind that the Eagles had allowed only 107 points all season. That number didn't budge against North Chicago. In what might have been its most impressive performance in a season full of highlights, Lakes won by a staggering final of 62-0 over a Warhawks squad that counted just 1 loss. The win gave the Eagles (8-1, 6-0) their first outright North Suburban Conference Prairie Division championship and all the momentum they could ask for heading into the playoffs next week.
