The play looked so effortless, but it was the product of time and effort. • New Trier edges Fremd May 1, 2014 11:52 PM

  • Huntley comes up short vs. New Trier Apr 17, 2014 10:58 PM
Huntley doesn’t meet New Trier too often, but when the two do meet it turns out to be more than a battle on the field. The Red Raiders have had the edge in a couple of previous meetings with the Trevians with a victory and a tie. But this time around an early goal in favor of No. 3 New Trier was enough to get past No. 6 Huntley in the quarterfinals of the PepsiCo girls soccer tournament in Winnetka on Thursday night.

  • Stevenson uses matches against New Trier as measuring stick Apr 8, 2014 9:44 PM
If Stevenson and New Trier are on the tennis courts at the same time, it must mark the official start of the regular season. The two perennial state powers opened the 2014 campaign at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center in Winnetka on Tuesday afternoon — and on the strength of wins at No. 1 singles and first doubles, the host Trevians earned a 7-2 victory over the Patriots. “After playing tennis against each other for nearly a month, it was good to finally get out there and face another opponent,” said Stevenson coach Tom Stanhope, whose Patriots won the North Suburban Conference title last season and finished runners-up to Hinsdale Center in the IHSA state tournament. “We always open our season against New Trier, and the great thing about playing a top-level opponent like them is you immediately see the things you have to work on. After today, we obviously have a lot of things to work on.”

  • Donated dresses brighten prom for thousands Apr 5, 2014 4:41 PM
More than 4,000 prom dresses made their way from Northbrook to a disadvantaged area of Chicago Saturday morning — the result of donations made by suburban students, businesses and civic organizations. As it has since 1999, Zengeler Cleaners’ Northbrook headquarters took responsibility for gathering, storing, repairing, cleaning and ultimately delivering the dresses. “There’s girls in tears. There’s a lot of joy,” Tom Zengler said.

  • Lake Zurich scores, but New Trier scores more Apr 4, 2014 10:47 PM
The effort and intensity stood out for Lake Zurich’s girls soccer team Friday night. The Bears tallied a first-half goal against powerful New Trier in the cold and wind. But the Trevians recovered and went on to win the nonconference match 3-1. New Trier had not allowed a goal this season.

  • Rolling Meadows knows how to get downstate Mar 4, 2014 7:58 AM
After winning two Barrington sectional games after trailing at halftime, Rolling Meadows found itself leading by 13 points in Monday's Class 4A Hoffman Estates girls basketball supersectional against New Trier. But not so fast. This still wasn't going to be as easy as it may have once appeared. That's because standout guard Alexis Glasgow did not appear in the locker room at half. Instead, she was in the trainer's room nursing an apparent broken nose. But like all great teams do, the state-ranked Mustangs rose to the occasion without their Northwestern recruit and rolled to a 60-43 victory over the Trevians for a second straight trip to the Final Four. Rolling Meadows (28-4) will face Geneva (26-5) and coach Sarah Meadows at 6:30 p.m. in Friday's semifinals at Illinois State's Redbird Arena.

  • Rolling Meadows, New Trier in super matchup Mar 1, 2014 9:22 PM
The saying goes ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going.’ Rolling Meadows’ girls basketball team has certainly lived up to that adage in the state tournament. That’s why the Mustangs find themselves playing in the Elite Eight for the second straight time after 36 seasons without a sectional title. The state-ranked Mid-Suburban East champs (27-4) came back from halftime deficits in their two sectional wins to advance to Monday’s Class 4A Hoffman Estates supersectional against New Trier (27-4) at 8 p.m.

  • Stevenson superb in nixing New Trier Dec 27, 2013 5:37 PM
Independent of the outcome, the details make a difference to the Stevenson boys basketball team this season. The Class 4A state runners-up from a year ago have big goals this season. So when they played to near perfection in building a 31-0 lead in a second round game of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament against New Trier, the Patriots weren’t about to let their foot off the pedal. “It’s our motto this year — everything matters,” said Stevenson coach Pat Ambrose. “No matter the situation, every play, every moment matters to us in achieving our goals.” The Patriots tied a tournament record by shutting out the Trevians in the first quarter and cruised to a 76-30 victory over New Trier.

  • Top-seed New Trier routs St. Charles North Dec 26, 2013 10:05 PM
St. Charles North girls basketball coach Sean Masoncup would have liked it much better had his team played the entire game like it played the second half Thursday. But the North Stars fell behind top-seeded New Trier 18-0 and could never recover in a 72-44 loss in the opening round of the 31st annual Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown in Carpentersville.

  • Experienced New Trier denies Geneva Nov 9, 2013 10:37 PM
During the postseason, Geneva’s volleyball team turned away strong competition from the likes of Batavia, Glenbard West and St. Charles North on the way to its first-ever sectional championship. On Saturday, the Vikings (29-10) ran into an immovable object in the form of New Trier (31-2). The defending state runner-up Trevians punched their second straight ticket downstate with a 25-19, 25-21 Class 4A supersectional victory at St. Charles East.

  • Wheeling motors ahead, makes sectional final Oct 29, 2013 9:51 PM
The Mid-Suburban League boys soccer champs have earned another road trip to Evanston. Wheeling advanced in the Class 3A boys soccer playoffs by edging New Trier 1-0 on Tuesday night in sectional semifinal play at Evanston. The Wildcats (20-1-2) will compete in Saturday’s sectional championship game against the host Wildkits at Lazier Field. The start time for that contest has been moved to 3 p.m. Evanston advanced by edging Maine South 2-1 in Tuesday’s earlier semifinal. After a scoreless first half, Wheeling’s Ivan Mancilla had the game’s only goal with an assist from Jose Garcia. Wildcats goalkeeper Gary Mendoza made 8 saves to earn the shutout.

  • New Trier applies pressure, gets past Leyden Oct 2, 2013 10:50 PM
Leyden ventured far away from the West Suburban Conference late Wednesday night, and its trip to the north shore proved to be a bit unfriendly. Perennial Central Suburban League power New Trier had too much firepower for the Eagles (7-8-1), scoring 3 second-half goals and sending Mark Valintis’ club home on the short end of a 3-0 result at the school’s west campus in Northfield.
