  • New Trier thwarts Hersey with clutch shot Dec 13, 2014 7:17 PM
Before the season, everyone considered Fremd and New Trier the clear top two girls basketball teams in the Cook County suburbs. In a rare opportunity to face both in the first six weeks of the season, Hersey almost completed a sweep over the powerhouses. Two weeks after a stunning 47-43 win over Fremd, the Huskies almost shocked New Trier on Saturday afternoon in Arlington Heights. Hersey held the Trevians to 1 field goal in the final 12:20 of the game. But that field goal with two seconds left in the game proved to be the difference in a battle well worth the admission price of $3 at the Ken Carter Gymnasium. New Trier junior Kathryn Pedi swished an open 3-pointer off an inbounds play with two seconds left to lift the visitors to a 42-39 triumph. Hersey missed on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

  • Stevenson turns up the ‘D’ Nov 15, 2014 10:34 PM
It’s easy to get swept up in Stevenson’s offense. The high-scoring, pass-happy Patriots are fun to watch and feature some of the best athletes in Lake County, including two future Northwestern Wildcats. Wide receiver Cameron Green will be continuing his football career in Evanston while quarterback Willie Bourbon will be playing baseball there. With its stars shining bright all season, Stevenson ranked among the top scoring teams in the North Suburban Conference with 31.4 points per game. Meanwhile, without quite as much hype, its defense actually did one better, and led the entire league in points allowed with 11 per game. That stinginess was on display again on Saturday as the Stevenson defense put a chokehold on visiting New Trier, propelling the undefeated and top-seeded Patriots (12-0) to a 38-10 Class 8A quarterfinal victory that extends their playoff run to a semifinal date against No. 2 Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn next week.

  • Fremd tops New Trier, makes final four Nov 4, 2014 10:24 PM
If anyone wondered about Fremd’s chances of reaching the boys soccer state tournament finals, well, surely there can be little doubt now. The Mid-Suburban League champs advance to the state semifinals Friday at Hoffman Estates High School. The Vikings (19-5-1) will meet Hinsdale Central (17-4-4) at 7 p.m.

  • Late score helps New Trier past Warren Sep 5, 2014 11:42 PM
A soggy, defensive standstill came down to field position and a sudden change of scheme. Thanks to a rushed 22-yard punt from visiting Warren, New Trier made hay on the offensive end when it mattered most. Struggling to find any footing with its inside run game against the Blue Devil front seven for the bulk of the game, the Trevians mixed it up in the closing minutes of play with sophomore quarterback Clay Czyzynski’s speed on the outside, Kevin Mulhern up the gut and a shifty Francis Fay misdirection to the two. Bulldozing fullback Caleb Roth delivered a soaring plunge into the end-zone with 23 seconds remaining and New Trier capped a 14-7 thriller at Robert Naughton Field.

  • Lake Park puts it all together in state quarterfinals Jun 6, 2014 9:24 PM
Defense wins championships, said Lake Park boys volleyball coach Tim Murphy, admitting the cliché. Yes it does, cliché or not. So does timely offense. The Lancers displayed both in the clutch in Friday’s state quarterfinal match at Hoffman Estates High School, dispatching familiar foe New Trier 25-16, 26-24 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals against Lincoln-Way East, a 25-12, 25-11 winner over Edwardsville.

  • New Trier stops Barrington Jun 3, 2014 9:37 PM
The Hersey girls soccer supersectional between Barrington and New Trier ended as these things usually do: with contrasting joy and sadness. And and at the final whistle, the first player joyfully embraced by her teammates was New Trier’s Kelly Maday. The player of the match for New Trier drove in the game-winner four minutes from time to give the Trevians (29-1-0) a 1-0 victory and a berth in the Class 3A state semifinals Friday night in Naperville at North Central College. New Trier meets Waubonsie Valley in its matchup at 7 p.m.

  • Huntley comes up short vs. New Trier Apr 17, 2014 10:58 PM
Huntley doesn’t meet New Trier too often, but when the two do meet it turns out to be more than a battle on the field. The Red Raiders have had the edge in a couple of previous meetings with the Trevians with a victory and a tie. But this time around an early goal in favor of No. 3 New Trier was enough to get past No. 6 Huntley in the quarterfinals of the PepsiCo girls soccer tournament in Winnetka on Thursday night.

  • Stevenson uses matches against New Trier as measuring stick Apr 8, 2014 9:44 PM
If Stevenson and New Trier are on the tennis courts at the same time, it must mark the official start of the regular season. The two perennial state powers opened the 2014 campaign at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center in Winnetka on Tuesday afternoon — and on the strength of wins at No. 1 singles and first doubles, the host Trevians earned a 7-2 victory over the Patriots. “After playing tennis against each other for nearly a month, it was good to finally get out there and face another opponent,” said Stevenson coach Tom Stanhope, whose Patriots won the North Suburban Conference title last season and finished runners-up to Hinsdale Center in the IHSA state tournament. “We always open our season against New Trier, and the great thing about playing a top-level opponent like them is you immediately see the things you have to work on. After today, we obviously have a lot of things to work on.”

There’s a lot of joy,” Tom Zengler said.
