  • Fremd charges into title game Mar 6, 2015 11:37 PM
Fremd left little doubt about just how ready it is to play for a state championship. The Vikings used an 11-0 run early in the first quarter as the springboard to a 57-28 rout of New Trier on Friday night in the Class 4A girls basketball state semifinals at Redbird Arena. Fremd (29-4), playing in a state final tournament for just the second time and the first since the first girls state tournament in 1977, will play Benet Academy (33-3) for the state championship at 8:15 p.m. Saturday. Benet defeated Homewood-Flossmoor 77-71 in Friday’s first semifinal. Fremd and Benet will each be appearing in their first state title game.

  • New Trier hangs on against Geneva Mar 2, 2015 10:16 PM
With its season slipping away in the third quarter of the Class 4A Conant supersectional Monday night, Geneva coach Sarah Meadows called timeout to rally her troups. New Trier was on a 17-3 run spanning the second and third quarters to erase an early 7-point Geneva lead and put the Vikings in a 9-point hole. “It was gut-check time,” Meadows said. “I said you have to decide what you want out of this game. You want to lose by 15 or do you want to be in it?” That’s a question you don’t need to ask seniors like Abby Novak and Janie McCloughan. Geneva fought back, getting as close as 49-48 at one point with four minutes left. The Vikings had shots in the air that could have tied the game or put them in the lead, but they could never quite get over the hump. New Trier pulled away with free throws late for a 57-49 victory.

  • Prospect takes charge in Charger Classic finale Dec 31, 2014 12:03 AM
Write tomorrow’s headline. Those were the three words Prospect girls basketball coach Ashley Graham printed in black letters on the white board in Knights’ locker room at Dundee-Crown High School on Tuesday night. Sure enough, the girls from Mt. Prospect made their biggest headline in 14 years of competing at the prestigious 16-team Dundee-Crown Charger Classic in Carpentersville. In a battle of unbeatens, Prospect remained that way with a stunning 51-46 triumph over New Trier to avenge last year’s 54-35 loss to the Trevians in the same championship game.

  • New Trier runs past Buffalo Grove Dec 29, 2014 9:54 PM
Buffalo Grove girls basketball coach Steve Kolodziej knew his team faced a tall task — literally — Monday night against New Trier in the semifinals of the 32nd annual Charger Classic Christmas Tournament at Dundee-Crown. But what the Trevians proved is they are more than just a tall basketball team. New Trier made seven 3-pointers and opened up a close game midway through the second quarter before cruising to a 67-45 win over the Bison.

  • New Trier hands Burlington Central 1st loss Dec 27, 2014 10:45 PM
Burlington Central’s girls basketball team got exactly what it wanted Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the 32nd annual Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown. Well, maybe the Rockets didn’t get exactly what they wanted, but they sure did get what they came to D-C for — competition. Defending tournament champion and undefeated New Trier, one of top Class 4A teams in the state, schooled the Rockets, 62-41, to advance to Monday’s 8 p.m. semifinal against Buffalo Grove,

  • New Trier shows its mettle against Dundee-Crown Dec 26, 2014 11:37 PM
New Trier appeared better than Dundee-Crown on paper. The Trevians proved it on the court. Storming to early 12-2 lead, New Trier never looked back in cruising to an easy 74-44 win over the host Chargers in first round action of the 32nd annual Charger Classic girls basketball Christmas tournament Friday night in Carpentersville.

  • Stevenson motors past New Trier Dec 22, 2014 10:32 PM
The pressure that Stevenson’s boys basketball team faced as the top seed and the defending champion of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament is nothing compared to the obstacle the Patriots have seen a couple of times already this season: brutal rush-hour traffic. “I don’t know what it is, but we have had that happen twice now,” Patriots coach Pat Ambrose said. The first incident came at the Thanksgiving tournament at Lyons Township, when the Patriots arrived after the scheduled tip. The latest came Monday night, but the rush-hour traffic was about the only thing that slowed the Patriots down in their opening-round contest at the 54th edition of this tournament. Stevenson raced out to a 26-7 lead after one quarter and a 52-16 advantage at the half en route to an 86-33 win over New Trier.

  • New Trier thwarts Hersey with clutch shot Dec 13, 2014 7:17 PM
Before the season, everyone considered Fremd and New Trier the clear top two girls basketball teams in the Cook County suburbs. In a rare opportunity to face both in the first six weeks of the season, Hersey almost completed a sweep over the powerhouses. Two weeks after a stunning 47-43 win over Fremd, the Huskies almost shocked New Trier on Saturday afternoon in Arlington Heights. Hersey held the Trevians to 1 field goal in the final 12:20 of the game. But that field goal with two seconds left in the game proved to be the difference in a battle well worth the admission price of $3 at the Ken Carter Gymnasium. New Trier junior Kathryn Pedi swished an open 3-pointer off an inbounds play with two seconds left to lift the visitors to a 42-39 triumph. Hersey missed on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

  • Stevenson turns up the ‘D’ Nov 15, 2014 10:34 PM
It’s easy to get swept up in Stevenson’s offense. The high-scoring, pass-happy Patriots are fun to watch and feature some of the best athletes in Lake County, including two future Northwestern Wildcats. Wide receiver Cameron Green will be continuing his football career in Evanston while quarterback Willie Bourbon will be playing baseball there. With its stars shining bright all season, Stevenson ranked among the top scoring teams in the North Suburban Conference with 31.4 points per game. Meanwhile, without quite as much hype, its defense actually did one better, and led the entire league in points allowed with 11 per game. That stinginess was on display again on Saturday as the Stevenson defense put a chokehold on visiting New Trier, propelling the undefeated and top-seeded Patriots (12-0) to a 38-10 Class 8A quarterfinal victory that extends their playoff run to a semifinal date against No. 2 Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn next week.

  • Fremd tops New Trier, makes final four Nov 4, 2014 10:24 PM
If anyone wondered about Fremd’s chances of reaching the boys soccer state tournament finals, well, surely there can be little doubt now. Will Lefevre added another brilliant save to his postseason collection and Ben Borst stunned New Trier with the game-winner ten minutes from time to give the Vikings a 1-0 victory Tuesday night in Class 3A Barrington supersectional action. The Mid-Suburban League champs advance to the state semifinals Friday at Hoffman Estates High School. The Vikings (19-5-1) will meet Hinsdale Central (17-4-4) at 7 p.m.

Live game action: Warren vs. New Trier

  • Late score helps New Trier past Warren Sep 5, 2014 11:42 PM
A soggy, defensive standstill came down to field position and a sudden change of scheme. Thanks to a rushed 22-yard punt from visiting Warren, New Trier made hay on the offensive end when it mattered most. Struggling to find any footing with its inside run game against the Blue Devil front seven for the bulk of the game, the Trevians mixed it up in the closing minutes of play with sophomore quarterback Clay Czyzynski’s speed on the outside, Kevin Mulhern up the gut and a shifty Francis Fay misdirection to the two. Bulldozing fullback Caleb Roth delivered a soaring plunge into the end-zone with 23 seconds remaining and New Trier capped a 14-7 thriller at Robert Naughton Field.
