Palacio, Naperville READS 2013 children's author, visited Naperville for three days, talking with almost 7,000 children and adults, signing more than 2,000 books and answering hundreds of questions. Adding to the wonder of the week were the ripples caused by Palacio's book, "Wonder," and her campaign for Choose Kind.

After the animal is skinned, the hide is sent to a tanner and a Styrofoam mold of the body is ordered. Once everything comes back, he wraps the skin around the mold, affixes the antlers, inserts eyes and adds various other touches.

    Vern Brancamp is an artist, but unlike other artists, for the 70-year-old taxidermist nature IS his canvas. "I got started when I was kid," he said. "My dad was a hunter and when we'd come back with pheasant he'd pluck all the feathers and throw them in the trash," he said. "It would eat at my insides to see all those beautiful feathers go to waste so I would pick them out of the trash and pin them out on cardboard."

"There might be an uncommon species, or even a mega-rarity in our midst, but it takes a careful and patient observer to detect it."

And there, nestled in the bare branches against a drab winter background, was an incredibly vibrant red cardinal that seemed to be gazing right back at him.
