At 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 28, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage's Kline Creek Farm will host the program "Memorial Day Remembered."   • Marvin Schmidt started the Avenue of Flags display at Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin while he was superintendent. The Elgin man worked at Bluff City from 1960 to 1985 and thought the Memorial Day tribute would bring respect back to the cemetery and honor deserving veterans. The first year, 200 flags lined the cemetery paths; now there are more than 500.

    Marvin Schmidt worked at Bluff City Cemetery for close to 30 years, making a variety of changes to the way the cemetery ran. Perhaps the greatest innovation of his career was launching the Avenue of Flags display for veterans on Memorial Day. Schmidt, 93, oversaw the program for decades, charging $7 for a pole and nameplate and asking families to send in flags. The prices have changed but the program remains largely the same.

Adventure, an exciting and remarkable experience involving danger and unknown risks, is what organizers say participants will find during a new athletic event coming Sunday, May 27, to downtown Aurora — the first Amped Up Adventure Race managed by Paddle and Trail and sponsored by Hollywood Casino Aurora. "The word 'adventure' pretty much defines the nature of this race," said Matt McCain, owner of Aurora-area online radio station Cynosure, who will be broadcasting live from the race.
