Kline Creek Farm event reminds community of the origins of Memorial Day May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Memorial Day has become a vacation holiday for many people. But for those who want to do something more commemorative this holiday, there's Kline Creek Farm. At 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 28, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage's Kline Creek Farm will host the program "Memorial Day Remembered." The program will include a ceremony reminiscent of those held during the 1890s for the holiday.

As Lombard prepares to mark Memorial Day in solemn remembrance of military personnel who died while serving, one Vietnam War veteran is preparing his notes. Tom Zilla, 71, of Lombard will speak at the village's Memorial Day ceremony, scheduled for noon Monday at the Veterans Memorial in the Sunken Garden of Lombard Common park.

The man behind Bluff City's Avenue of Flags May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Marvin Schmidt worked at Bluff City Cemetery for close to 30 years, making a variety of changes to the way the cemetery ran. Perhaps the greatest innovation of his career was launching the Avenue of Flags display for veterans on Memorial Day. Schmidt, 93, oversaw the program for decades, charging $7 for a pole and nameplate and asking families to send in flags. The prices have changed but the program remains largely the same.

Libertyville historic home tour features Broadway Street May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
The MainStreet Libertyville Design Committee will present the ninth Historic Walking Tour. This year's theme, "A Walk Down Broadway," differs from previous years in that it will feature the homes on a given street rather than a specific design in various locations. "Our goal is to encapsulate each decade from 1890 to present; taking a trip down memory lane — providing a historic timeline of the homes on the street," said Al Scott, co-chair of the design committee.

Lisle residents and members of Ross Bishop VFW Post 5696 are joining forces to ensure the true meaning of Memorial Day isn't lost during the approaching holiday weekend. "Memorial Day, to me, is remembering all those who have sacrificed," said retired Army Reserve Col. Brett Nila, commander of the VFW Lisle post. Nila will speak at a Memorial Day ceremony.

The name "Adventure Race" says it all. Adventure, an exciting and remarkable experience involving danger and unknown risks, is what organizers say participants will find during a new athletic event coming Sunday, May 27, to downtown Aurora — the first Amped Up Adventure Race managed by Paddle and Trail and sponsored by Hollywood Casino Aurora. "The word 'adventure' pretty much defines the nature of this race," said Matt McCain, owner of Aurora-area online radio station Cynosure, who will be broadcasting live from the race.
