Jim Kleinwachter is one of those at McDonald Farm in Naperville who teaches programs designed to reinforce the foundation's mission to preserve open space and natural lands, protect rivers and watersheds and promote stewardship of the environment. "I was volunteering for the Conservation Foundation and eventually had an opportunity to take a staff position," Kleinwachter said, "and now I get to do what I love to do and it's my job."

Nicarico Run for Reading returns with new theme, location May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
An annual fundraiser honoring the life of a 10-year-old murder victim returns to Naperville next month with a new theme and hopefully some "new excitement," organizers say. The 12th Annual Jeanine Nicarico Run for Reading is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at 5th Avenue Station, 200 E. Fifth Ave. For the first time, the fundraiser will take place at night, and participants are being asked to help illuminate the 5K course by wearing glow sticks.

Christian recently visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall on a class trip to Washington D.C., found his great uncle's name and, at his mother's and grandmother's request, made four etchings of his name.

Two-year-old Ryan Shaffer sat on the ice in his new skates after falling down. Then ice skating instructor Karen Kay Lavris talked to him with loving encouragement and, after several tries, he got back up on his skates, made his way across the ice and gave Lavris a big hug. "I love the children, I love every part of teaching them and seeing them smile," said Lavris. "It's magic. To see a little girl or a little boy get on the ice is a magical thing."

Lombard's Lilac Parade strolls through the decades May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Adults attending this year's Lilac Parade in Lombard will be sure to see something they recognize from years past. The 59th annual parade's theme is "Nostalgia from the '60s, '70s and '80s," which parade committee chairwoman Erica Fisette said will appeal to younger and "more experienced" parade viewers. "We're sure to see some tie-dye and some peace signs and maybe some leg warmers for the '80s," Fisette said. "It should be a fun parade this year."
