‘Wonder’ author inspires students to Choose Kind Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
In a "Wonder" of a week, R.J. Palacio, Naperville READS 2013 children's author, visited Naperville for three days, talking with almost 7,000 children and adults, signing more than 2,000 books and answering hundreds of questions. Adding to the wonder of the week were the ripples caused by Palacio's book, "Wonder," and her campaign for Choose Kind.

She teaches students English and language arts at Eastview Middle School in Bartlett but reaches beyond her eighth-graders to improve the quality of education districtwide. A ripple effect from Brozik's mentorship means she will continue to affect student learning long after she retires at the end of this year.

Vern Brancamp is an artist, but unlike other artists, for the 70-year-old taxidermist nature IS his canvas. "I got started when I was kid," he said. "My dad was a hunter and when we'd come back with pheasant he'd pluck all the feathers and throw them in the trash," he said. "It would eat at my insides to see all those beautiful feathers go to waste so I would pick them out of the trash and pin them out on cardboard."

Experienced birders know to expect the unexpected, and Reiter says that's a smart approach if you want to see new birds. "There might be an uncommon species, or even a mega-rarity in our midst, but it takes a careful and patient observer to detect it."

CASA Kane County concluded its two-year endowment campaign with $1.2 million in the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley. CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate, received 40 percent of every dollar donated up to $1 million from the Dunham Fund, whose grant also concluded at the end of the year.

That's how it was for Robert Wilson, who woke up Christmas morning, padded into the kitchen of his Glen Ellyn home for a cup of coffee, and happened to glance out the window toward a bank of trees standing, oh, maybe 40 feet from the back of his house. And there, nestled in the bare branches against a drab winter background, was an incredibly vibrant red cardinal that seemed to be gazing right back at him. "It looked," Wilson says now, "like he was staring at the Christmas tree in our family room."
