One of two students who were sexually abused by a former Aurora School District 129 band teacher has sued the district, the teacher and Superintendent James Rydland. The student, identified only as Jane Doe, argues the district didn't do enough to report to state officials suspected abuse by Stephen Orland, who pleaded guilty earlier this year and is serving a 12-year prison term.

  • District 203 toughens policy on reporting suspected abuse Sep 18, 2012 12:00 AM
Naperville Unit District 203 officials are planning to strengthen a district policy on abused and neglected children, in light of recent allegations that administrators in a neighboring school district may have failed to report a possible sex abuse case immediately. One of those administrators — current District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges — was principal of West Aurora High School in 2010 when a custodian reported an encounter between band director Steve Orland and a female student.

  • Dist. 203 admits calendar was a mistake Sep 17, 2012 12:00 AM
Naperville Unit District 203 school board members said Monday they should've better listened to parents, students and school district staff before approving a school calendar that starts earlier than most wanted. And so, it's likely the current starting date of the 2013-2014 school year — Aug. 14 — could be moved to a later date.

District 203 school board backs superintendent Aug 29, 2012 12:00 AM
New Naperville Unit District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges appears to have most school board members' support as Kane County authorities investigate whether he and other West Aurora school employees illegally failed to report concerns of inappropriate behavior between a teacher and student. At least two board members, however, say they have questions about how Bridges handled accusations of sexual abuse lodged by a custodian who said he saw suspicious activity between a former West Aurora High School band director and a female student when Bridges was principal.

  • Dan Bridges was principal of West Aurora High School in 2010 when a custodian reported an encounter between band director Steve Orland and a female student. Orland has since been convicted of sexually assaulting two other female students.

DCFS: West Aurora High broke state reporting law Aug 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Officials with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services say several West Aurora School District officials, including Dan Bridges, who is now Superintendent of Naperville Unit District 203, acted irresponsibly by not reporting an alleged act of abuse in July 2010. "Schools can sometimes make the mistake of thinking that they have the option to do their own internal evaluation," DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe said.

Dist. 203 encouraged by early returns on boundary changes Aug 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Attendance figures always fluctuate early in the school year, but Naperville Unit District 203 officials and parents say they've seen enough to call the first phase of this year's controversial boundary changes a success. District officials say 17,421 students were enrolled for the first week of classes, which is right on target with their projections. But they're even happier because their projections appear on the money for both Mill Street and Beebe elementary schools, which were seriously overcrowded before the boundary changes were implemented

Just as officials at two Naperville-area school districts predicted, few families, when offered the choice to move from a "failing" school, took the districts up on the offer.
