Marmion sends 7 to state Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Metea Valley wrestling coach Claudio Torres spoke for many of his brethren when sizing up the field of the Class 3A Shepard sectional Saturday evening in Palos Heights. "It’s like a mini-state tournament,” Torres said. “I have seen so many state qualifiers (from past years) get eliminated already. There are ranked wrestlers not getting out (to the individual state tournament this week in Champaign).” Defending team state champion Sandburg was the true measuring stick with 10 qualifiers, and the field included some of the top Catholic schools in the state. Marmion went toe-to-toe with the likes of Marist, St. Rita — its team-sectional dual-meet foe a week from Tuesday at Hinsdale South — and Mt. Carmel to lead the area programs with seven state qualifiers.

Defense does it for Glenbard East Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Led by Marvin Grant-Clark’s game-high 17 points with two others scoring in double digits and a defense that put the clamps on a very good offense, it was no surprise after Glenbard East’s 66-51 win over visiting Naperville North on Friday that talk was about overall team play and defense. “Defense is the key. If we get our stops, the offense is going to come,” Grant-Clark said. “I thought we were very unselfish.” Mike Kjeldsen followed Grant-Clark with 16 points and Tahron Harvey had 13.

For Naperville North it’s not about the points Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Naperville North won't be taking its team to compete at state next weekend. The thing is, it doesn't really matter to the Huskies, because they've already won plenty this year. After a surprise victory in the DuPage Valley Conference and then a fantastic regional, the Huskies put the final touch on their team season by taking third in Wednesday's Hinsdale Central sectional with a season-best 139.575 points. No one was going to beat Lyons Twp. anyway; the Lions very well could be crowned state champions next week. The Lions scored 149.25 points while Hinsdale Central was a distant second with a 140.9. Neuqua Valley placed sixth with a 134.75.

Neuqua Valley holding out for top spot Feb 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Neuqua Valley's boys basketball team is zeroing in on a seventh conference title and first since 2010. Defending champion Metea Valley (15-8, 8-2) hopes 5-17 South Elgin — which Neuqua (22-2, 10-1 UEC Valley) beat 71-32 on Dec. 15 — can pull off the upset and the Mustangs can beat Waubonsie Valley and Bartlett to force a first-place tie.

Naperville North too swift for West Aurora Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Having spent way more of Naperville North's game at West Aurora Thursday night on the bench in foul trouble than she wanted, senior guard Zoe Swift made the most of her minutes when she finally got back in. After the Blackhawks had erased Naperville North's 13-point first half lead to go ahead for the first time midway through the fourth quarter, Swift re-entered. Over the final 4:48 Swift scored all 6 of her points and assisted on two other baskets, helping her team turn a 42-39 deficit into a 52-48 victory.

Neuqua Valley does well, Naperville North does better Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Neuqua Valley girls gymnastics coach Jo Ann Pschigoda had been waiting all season for the Wildcats to put it all together. The Wildcats scored a season-best 135.2 points at Tuesday’s Neuqua Valley regional but fell short of Naperville North, which claimed the regional title with 137.925 points. Sandburg/Stagg co-op was third with a 127.4 and Andrew was fourth with a 127.175. “We did have a few bobbles, but the thing is they kept working,” Naperville North coach Chris Stanicek said. “I think they’re confident and they’re where they need to be right now with the right mindset, with their routines and their conditioning.”

Tired Curia wins for Naperville North Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Naperville North's Eric Curia is officially ready for the postseason. Curia, who qualified for state last year in both the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle, won the 500 and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team at Saturday's Metea Valley's Mustang Invite. "My strategy for in-season racing is to get as tired as possible, and being this tired and winning today means I'm ready for my taper," said Curia, who will play water polo at the U.S. Air Force Academy next year. "In the 500 I just try to go out fast and hang on to the end. My goals are to break 4:30 at state and finish in the top six." Curia's time for the 500 on Saturday was 4:48.11.

15 in a row for Glenbard North Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Johnny Gosinski etched his name among DuPage Valley Conference immortals Saturday in Carol Stream. Johnny Gosinski etched his name among DuPage Valley Conference immortals Saturday in Carol Stream. When the Glenbard North 132-pound wrestler put the finishing touches on his 7-1 victory in the championship match over West Chicago junior Robert Svestka, Gosinski became the sixth athlete in league history to become a four-time league champion. As a team, the conference should consider permanently retiring its championship trophy after the host Panthers extended their remarkable streak of consecutive titles to 15.
