For the 2011-12 Lake County Academic Team, high school was just the beginning, of what they hope will be lives of discovery, success, and service. "When I was in fourth grade, my uncle died from cancer," relates Jonathan Kersky, a team member from Stevenson High School. "It was at that early age that I decided I wanted to be an oncologist."

Borucki’s faith is rewarded by fate at Mundelein May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
Mundelein's Ryan Borucki, a versatile lefty who had a whopper of a growth spurt over the last 12 months and is now 6-foot-4, has been told by multiple scouting directors that he could be snapped up within the first five rounds of the Major League Baseball draft on June 4. That could net him anywhere from $400,000 to $1 million in signing bonuses. Not bad for a pitcher who hasn't pitched much this spring and may yet need surgery before he gets to the next level of the game.

Mundelein’s Hemmer hammers away May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
Rounding first base hard had become the norm for Alex Hemmer, but this time Mundelein's softball slugger stood on the bag. Then like all good base runners, she looked at her coach for instructions. She saw Mustangs head coach Brett Wilhelm flashing numbers. "My coach kept throwing numbers at me and I had no idea what he was trying to tell me," Hemmer said with a laugh. "I was like, OK, I'm just going to keep hitting.' " Wilhelm wasn't giving Hemmer the steal sign, however, nor trying to tell her how many outs there were. "I was showing (assistant) coach (Pete) Nadler how many RBIs she had. I'm like, I think it's 7,' " Wilhelm said. "You could hear them all talking in the dugout." True. Hemmer's 2-run single in the third followed her 2-RBI base hit in the second and her 3-run homer in the first. She belted a solo shot in the fifth, finishing 4-for-4 with 2 homers and 8 RBI, as third-seeded Mundelein pounded No. 2 Libertyville 15-0 in five innings in a semifinal of the Class 4A Carmel regional Wednesday.

Defensive-minded Carmel shuts out Mundelein May 15, 2012 12:00 AM
Defense has been a defining trait for Carmels girls soccer team season all season long. The Corsairs have only given up 3 or more goals in a loss once, and theyve largely kept opponents off the scoreboard this season. To start the postseason, it was more of the same from Carme. The fourth-seeded Corsairs shut out No. 14 seed Mundelein 2-0 in a Class 3A Glenbrook South regional semifinal on Tuesday afternoon. Carmel (14-3-2) advances to meet either No. 5 Glenbrook South or No. 12 Warren, who play Wednesday, in the regional final round at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Fremds C.J. Patton made a huge save to help him earn a second-place finish at the boys state gymnastics individual finals Saturday at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort. Patton nearly fell during the preliminaries. He was doing a Magyar, when his hand slipped off the pommel handle. But the junior instinctively reached onto the horse and was able to stay on, earning himself a 9.30. When I was going up, it just didnt feel right, Patton said. I thought it through in my head. They key is to make it look clean. Patton then came back in the finals to make one of his best rides of the season, scoring a 9.65.
