‘Red Monster’ coming to Mundelein youth baseball, softball complex Apr 16, 2013 12:00 AM
When Mike Jones headed Mundelein's youth baseball program a few years ago he decided the program needed the "Red Monster." Jones' dream before he died six months ago at the age of 50 was to model a 15-foot-tall wall after the Green Monster in Cooperstown, N.Y.'s, Little League All-Star Village. Mundelein Baseball and Softball Association officials say they want to honor Jones by making his dream come true.

Mundelein parks superintendent celebrates milestone Oct 12, 2012 12:00 AM
What started out as a summer job for Jerry Cleaveland at the Mundelein Park District has become a 40-year career that is still going strong. This October marks Cleaveland's big anniversary. Times are much different from when he started out cutting grass for the park district. “A buddy and I were looking to earn some money and responded to an ad in the paper; we got the jobs, and I never left,” he said.

Concern for swans brings expert to Mundelein golf course Jul 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Concern over pond conditions for two wild swans living at Mundelein's Steeplechase Golf Club prompted nearby residents to summon an expert to survey the situation Monday. North Barrington-based Knox Swan and Dog donated its services at the 203-acre course. Company owner Bob Knox said despite the drought, the water is deep enough for the swans.

Championship water skiers forming on-water pyramids is just one of the many events at Mundelein Park & Recreation District's Community Picnic. “The picnic brings people together. It’s neighbors meeting neighbors and pride in the community,” said park district Director Margaret Resnick. “Diamond Lake is just such a beautiful place, and we want this to really become something everyone looks forward to.”

Public swimming pools were a popular place for people trying to stay cool in Lake County during last week's heat wave, a Daily Herald survey showed. Attendance figures at some pools were up dramatically for the first week of July, compared to the same period in 2011.

Better weather this spring meant a growth spurt for golf at the Lake County Forest Preserve District's facilities compared with last year. At the district courses — Countryside in Mundelein, Brae Loch in Grayslake and ThunderHawk in Beach Park — revenues and the number of rounds played have increased substantially, officials say. "Especially the first five months," of the year, said Bonnie McLeod, the district's finance director. "Last year, the spring was very bad."
