    For a high school baseball player, it doesn’t get any more “pinch-me-is-it-real” magical than what Timothy Jablonsky did on Monday night at Aviators Stadium in Rockford. His pinch-hit grand slam was the key blow as the Wolves ousted Mundelein 9-6 in a Class 4A supersectional.

    Mundelein had Libertyville slugger Evan Skoug played perfectly again, and the Mustangs had another quality opponent right where they wanted them. Again. When shortstop Derek Parola scooped Skoug’s sharply hit groundball up the middle and beat the speedy Jimmy Govern to the second-base bag for a game-ending forceout with two runners on, Mundelein had capped a stunning 8-1 win in Saturday’s Class 4A sectional final at Glenbrook South.

    Derek Parola noted, with a smile, that he’s been around Mundelein baseball “too much” during his life. So following the Mustangs’ 9-3 win over host Glenbrook South in a Class 4A sectional semifinal in Glenview on Thursday, the senior and son of Mundelein coach Todd Parola was confident in his assessment of Saturday’s sectional final. No. 3 Mundelein (34-2) will play — oh, yes — top-seeded Libertyville (33-5) at 10 a.m. The rivals split during North Suburban Lake Division action, with the visitor winning each time. Libertyville pulled out a 3-1 victory, before Mundelein won 8-6 the following day.

  • Warren tops Mundelein a third time May 31, 2014 4:26 PM
    After defeating No. 5 seed Mundelein twice in the regular season, No. 4 Warren was hoping to beat the Mustangs again Saturday morning for the championship of the Class 4A Loyola softball regional. The Mustangs (24-12) fell behind 6-1 after two innings and they could never fully recover as the Blue Devils (23-9) rolled to an 11-4 victory to advance to the sectional for the second straight season.

    Mundelein made sure that this time it wouldn’t be as close. After beating Warren twice this season by a run in each game, Mundelein put things together to roll past the Blue Devils 7-1 to capture the Palatine regional Saturday. Mundelein (33-2) will meet Glenbrook South on Thursday at the Glenbrook South sectional.

    Bri Dreschler went 3-for-4 with a double, and Grant’s softball team pulled out a 5-4 win over second-seeded Prairie Ridge in a Class 4A regional semifinal at McHenry on Wednesday. McKenzie Sancken was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for No. 3 Grant (24-9), which advances to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of today’s game between top-seeded McHenry and No. 4 Grayslake North.

    There was no holding back Mundelein in the Class 4A baseball playoffs at Palatine on Wednesday. With their ace on the mound in Adam Turner and a huge home run from Ryan Hollander, Mundelein was able to get out of the first round with a 3-1 victory over Fremd.

    Max Spiglanin and Mike Heinz hammered 10 and 9 kills, respectively, as Vernon Hills’ boys volleyball team downed Libertyville 25-19, 25-16 in regional semifinal play at Carmel Catholic on Tuesday night.

    Jenny Behan and Carmel Catholic’s softball team played long ball again Saturday. Behan delivered her sixth 2-homer game of the season, as the Corsairs defeated Marist 8-6 to salvage a split in the East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader.

    Junior Justin Blasinski stole the show on senior day for Lakes’ baseball team. Blasinski provided the the game-winning RBI on a bases-loaded single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Eagles defeated visiting Marian Central 4-3 Saturday.

    Baseball Mundelein 4, Vernon Hills 1: Luke Adams and Reese Dolan doubled for the Mustangs. Mundelein improved to 31-2, while Vernon Hills fell to 21-11. Libertyville 3, Deerfield 1: Matt Reed and Riley Lees had doubles for the newly crowed North Suburban Conference champs, and Adam Formento earned the win. Libertyville improved to 28-5. Lakes 4, Waukegan 3: Joe Sisk (RBI, walk) and Cody Brumm both went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored for the Eagles. Zach Fuller pitched 5 innings for Lakes (18-12) and picked up the win, while Cody Nuxoll tossed 2 innings for the save. Dundee-Crown 5, Grayslake North 4: The Knights got doubles from Dylan Foster and Ryan Gross in their Fox Valley Conference finale. Grayslake North fell to 13-19 and 7-11.

    Libertyville’s baseball team celebrated more than the North Suburban Lake Division championship Tuesday. Anthony Mack fired a five-inning no-hitter, as the Wildcats defeated host Zion-Benton 5-0. Libertyville (26-5) finished 11-1 in the NSC Lake, one game ahead of Mundelein. The Wildcats will play Grant at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for the conference championship in Fox Lake.
