A lack of hustle? A lack of energy? That doesn’t sound like Mundelein girls basketball. Yet that had been the complaint during a two-game losing streak that hit the Mustangs. Evidently, someone lit a fire under the Mustangs before Friday night’s North Suburban Lake Division game against visiting Zion-Benton. Mundelein senior guard Marie DeVito hit four 3-pointers. • Lake Zurich roars out after intermission to remain unbeaten Dec 6, 2014 11:18 PM
With every win that Lake Zurich’s boys basketball team adds to it unbeaten total, the target on its back gets bigger and bigger. So when the Bears found themselves in a tight North Suburban Lake Division contest at Mundelein Saturday night, a little halftime pep talk from seniors Will McClaughry and Mike Travlos did the trick. “At halftime, the kids were saying that they needed to come out and show and play like they are a 6-0 team,” Lake Zurich coach Billy Pitcher said. Lake Zurich responded by outscoring the Mustangs 20-6 in the third quarter en route to a 66-52 win, keeping the Bears perfect at 7-0 and 2-0 in division play.

  • Weber sticks with it as Barrington tops Mundelein Nov 28, 2014 11:37 PM
It’s not how you start but rather how you finish that can make the difference between victory and defeat. That’s part of the motivation Barrington junior guard Ben Weber had in mind with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. “I knew what was at stake,” said Weber, who finished with 18 points to lead all scorers. “I just had to get rid of the negative thoughts and come back and make a good play.” After being fouled on a three-point attempt and missing all three ensuing free-throws, Weber collected back-to-back steals that he converted into layups. That helped stave off a Mundelein charge and ultimately lead to a 68-55 victory in the Mundelein Thanksgiving tournament Friday night.
