    Maggie Piazzi led a balanced attack, and Libertyville’s girls golf team stayed undefeated Wednesday. Piazzi, a returning junior playing in the No. 4 spot, earned medalist honors with a 41 at Bittersweet Golf Club in leading the Wildcats to a 167 and convincing win over host Warren (198).

    Coming off a 16-3 season a year ago, Carmel Catholic’s girls golf team continues to show no letup. Juniors Alexa Amato and Kayla Ryan each shot a 41, as the Corsairs improved to 3-0 by posting a 175 in beating Palatine (214) at Palatine Hills Golf Course on Tuesday. Carmel also counted Erin Kehoe’s 45 and Daniella Savovich’s 48. Libertyville d. Highland Park: At Highland Park Golf Course, the visiting Wildcats shot a 178 to edge the Giants by 1 stroke. Simone Mikaelian led Libertyville with a 40, followed by Megan Sturonas (43), Jessica Lovinger (47) and Katherine Stegman (48). “Can’t get any closer,” coach Greg Pedersen said after his Wildcats improved to 5-0. “Our kids have been doing what it takes to get victories. Highland Park’s kids are really improving.” Kelli Ono of Highland Park was the medalist with a 38. Stevenson d. Warren: At Bittersweet, the Patriots shot a 186 to defeat the host Blue Devils (207). Olivia Stomberg’s 44 paced Stevenson, which also counted 46s from Surya Vijayasankar and Alexia Fidman and a 50 from Stephanie Namkoong. Warren’s Erica Price was the medalist with a 38. Lake Forest d. Mundelein: At Countryside, Emily Young’s 39 led the visiting Scouts (180 to victory. Mundelein (199) received a 43 from Megan Wiese and a 49 from Jennifer Dimitriou. Lake Zurich d. Lakes: At Countryside, Aine Mattera shot a winning 43 and the Bears (200) defeated the Eagles (269). Lakes got a 55 from Gretchen Metzger.

Vernon Hills: At Vernon Hills Golf Course, the Wildcats remained undefeated by prevailing in a tight North Suburban Conference match, 178 to 181, as Megan Sturonas and Sara Keefe shot a 41 and 42, respectively. “We didn’t have our best stuff, but Megan and Sara really kept us in it,” coach Greg Pedersen said after his Wildcats improved to 4-0 and 3-0 in the NSC. Medalist honors went to Vernon Hills senior Kari Lee, who fired a 40. Simone Mikaelian added a 45 for Libertyville, and Jessica Lovinger had a 50. Faith Jung (45), Kalina Yang (47) and Fayth Kim (49) also broke 50 for Vernon Hills, which fell to 2-1. Deerfield d. Mundelein: At Countryside, the host Mustangs (200) fell to the Warriors (188). Mundelein’s Jennifer Dimitriou shot a 41, three strokes behind medalist Elyse Emerzian of Deerfield. Marian Central d. Grant: The Hurricanes (212) defeated the Bulldogs (237), who were led by Kylie Diana’s 58 and Sydney Bell’s 59.

    Alejandro Sotelo notched a hat trick for Round Lake’s boys soccer team. His teammate Freddie Ramirez matched him. Sotelo and Ramirez accounted for all of the scoring for the Panthers in their 6-1 win over Dundee-Crown in a semifinal match of the North Shore Shootout at Lake Forest on Thursday night.

Mundelein: At Crane’s Landing, Myra Peterson and Stephanie Namkoong each shot a 40 to tie for medalist honors, and the Patriots opened North Suburban Conference action by shooting a 172 to beat visiting Mundelein (209). Stevenson also counted the scores of freshmen Olivia Hancock (45) and Olivia Stomberg (47). Holly Petlak’s 47 paced Mundelein. Carmel d. St. Viator: At Old Orchard Country Club, the visiting Corsairs opened defense of their East Suburban Catholic Conference championship by shooting a season-best 167 to defeat St. Viator (232). Leading Carmel was medalist Alexa Amato with a 39. Fellow junior Kayla Ryan shot a 41, sophomore Erin Kehoe had a 43, and junior Eva Savovich carded a 44. Vernon Hills d. Grant: At Vernon Hills Golf Course, Kari Lee fired a 38, as the host Cougars carded a 175 to win the North Suburban Conference match. Vernon Hills (2-0) also got a 42 from Faith Jung, a 45 from Fayth Kim and a 50 from Mary Paulson. Grant (233) received matching 56s from Bri Burgeson and Kylie Diana. Prairie Ridge d. Lake Zurich: At Village Green, the Bears (216) got edged out by the Wolves (215). Aine Mattera led Lake Zurich with a 46. Warren d. Lakes: At Antioch Golf Course, the visiting Blue Devils shot a 212 to capture the North Suburban Conference match. Lakes (306) was led by Lauren Clark’s personal-best 56.

They're putting their money where their mouths are by planning a $23.6 million expansion dedicated to so-called STEM instruction. “It puts Mundelein up at the front of the pack,” said Superintendent Kevin Myers, who joined the district this summer. “To me, that makes it a point of pride for our community.”
