  • Score this one in favor of Mundelein Oct 21, 2014 11:05 PM
Mundelein’s soccer team has had its problems scoring goals this season. The Mustangs had lost three of their last four games by 1-0 scores. In their Class 3A regional opener Tuesday night, the Mustangs saw their scoring frustrations continue — until the second half. The Mustangs exploded for three goals and ended No. 10 Round Lake’s season with a 3-0 victory at Libertyville. Mason Homsey, Jesus Alba and Armando Gomez scored for No. 7 Mundelein, which will face second-seeded Libertyville at 4 p.m. Saturday.

  • Girls cross country: Repeat NSC title for Lake Zurich Oct 18, 2014 8:09 PM
After winning the North Suburban Conference title by 26 points last year over Vernon Hills, Lake Zurich knew it was definitely a contender to make it two in a row Saturday afternoon at Lake Forest’s west campus. And the determined Bears did exactly that on the slightly muddy and damp 3-mile course as they earned a third NSC championship in the last four years, finishing with 68 points to 89 for runner-up Warren. It turned out to be an epic battle for that second-place finish in the team standings as the Blue Devils edged Libertyville (93 points) in third, the host Scouts (94) in fourth, and Vernon Hills (96) in fifth.

After taking second place to Vernon Hills last year, the Lake Zurich boys cross country team returned to the league mountain top Saturday afternoon at the North Suburban Conference meet in Lake Forest. The Bears outdistanced the runner-up Cougars this time around as Lake Zurich captured the championship of the 13-team meet with 43 points, well ahead of VH’s 96, in the 3-mile race on the grounds of the west campus.

  • Nice beginning for Mundelein before Stevenson pulls away Oct 17, 2014 11:40 PM
Yes, the world would probably stop turning if winless Mundelein toppled unbeaten Stevenson in football. That didn’t happen, but that 14-play drive with which Mundelein opened up this NSC Lake Division battle was a thing of beauty. “That first drive felt great,’’ said Mundelein quarterback Colten Fisher. “I felt like, let’s play and see what happens. I think it stunned them a little.” The heavily underdog Mustangs marched nearly 70 yards in a seven-minute span. “I was surprised,’’ said Stevenson receiver Cameron Green. “I couldn’t believe it took about all of the first quarter. Hey, that’s props to them.” Green scored a pair of touchdowns. The second one was clearly spectacular in nature. Both teams substituted freely in the second half as the Patriots (8-0) held serve 42-6 on Friday night in Lincolnshire.

  • Libertyville’s depth sinks Mundelein Oct 16, 2014 10:05 PM
Lucy Saucedo raced to a pair of individual wins, and Libertyville’s girls swimming team used its depth to defeat host Mundelein 112-74 in North Suburban Conference action Thursday night. Saucedo won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.126, touching out teammate Anne Barnett (2:03.82). Saucedo captured the 500 free in 5:31.25. Falconer took the 200 individual medley (2:11.91) and 50 free (25.17), while Kordik was a winner in the 100 free (54.43) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.19), as she edged out Libertyville’s Macey Neubauer (1:07.43) in the latter race.

  • Libertyville gets a kick out of Chartier’s successes Oct 16, 2014 8:31 PM
Move over, Riley Lees. Those cheers — maybe the loudest of the night during Libertyville’s 55-0 win over visiting Mundelein on homecoming last Friday — were for Corbin Chartier. The 5-foot-3, 120-pound, goggles-wearing Chartier kicked a pair of PATs in the second half, after the hosts built a 35-0 lead by halftime on the strength of 3 touchdowns by star-quarterback Lees. Call it a big night for a little guy.

  • Prospect likes its downstate prospects Oct 13, 2014 9:39 PM
All the work and practices Prospect coach Jim Hamann put his girls golf team through this fall were geared toward seeing his players enjoying their best golf at the end of the season. With that in mind, the Knights sure must have made their coach proud on Tuesday at Bittersweet Golf Club in Gurnee. They produced their best team score of the season (330) in some of the toughest conditions of the fall. With many golfers still having to finish their rounds due to rainy weather suspending play late in the afternoon, all of the results of the Warren Class AA sectional are still unofficial and not yet reported to the IHSA. Coaches will be alerted early in the morning if play will resume at noon Tuesday. If conditions are still unsuitable, Wednesday would be the finishing day. Yet to finish their team scores are Barrington, Loyola, Libertyville and Crystal Lake Central.

  • Familiar pattern for Mundelein in loss to Deerfield Oct 11, 2014 8:10 PM
The final score has been too familiar for Mundelein’s boys soccer team. Playing a nonconference match against Deerfield on Saturday, the Mustangs were held scoreless for the third time in four games. The three losses were all 1-0 finals. Despite several quality scoring chances against Deerfield, Mundelein fell to 10-6-3.

  • Girls tennis: With authority, Stevenson takes NSC title Oct 11, 2014 9:07 PM
After having to settle for a first-place tie with Lake Forest last year, Stevenson wanted to make sure it didn’t leave anything to chance Saturday afternoon at the North Suburban Conference girls tennis meet. And the Patriots proved they were a cut above the rest in the 14-team meet, as they easily clinched the title over the runner-up Scouts by a comfortable 38-25 score. Warren and Libertyville battled down to the wire with the Blue Devils holding off the Wildcats 23-21.5 for third place. Lake Zurich captured fifth with 16 points.

In a girls golf season that has seen both teams win conference championships, Carmel Catholic and Libertyville took aim Wednesday at flexing flagsticks, not necessarily each other, despite the proximity of the two schools. “It’s not what you might think,” Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said with a laugh. “No war on (Rte.) 176 or anything like that.” Libertyville won the friendly battle, the Class AA Carmel regional, on a gusty day in Waukegan. Led by medalist Simone Mikaelian’s 83, the North Suburban Conference-champion Wildcats carded a 344 to best runner-up Carmel (364) by 20 strokes at Bonnie Brook Golf Course.
