  • Mundelein edges improving Vernon Hills Jan 22, 2015 10:14 PM
Upon entering the Vernon Hills High School pool Thursday night, you couldn’t help sense that something big was possibly going to transpire. And, depending on your angle, it almost did. Since opening its doors in 2002, the Vernon Hills varsity boys swimming team has never beaten Mundelein. That didn’t change Thursday, but the results suggest it might in the near future. The meet was close throughout, and with Mundelein ahead 88-84, it came down to the last event for all the marbles. Mustangs junior Will Garcia had an inkling that things were tight. “Our team goals always come first,” said Garcia, who swam the second leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team that won that last event and clinched the victory for Mundelein. “We just told ourselves we need to win this one to win the meet and to forget about all of the other races.” The formula worked because Garcia joined Eric Kozokar, Jeremy Westgate and Duncan Black, who posted a winning time of 3:27.59. Garcia, known for his long-distance success, also won the 200-freestyle in 1:54.03, and followed that up with a victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:06.29.

  • Stevenson gets a humbling national-level reminder Jan 22, 2015 9:47 PM
Top-ranked Stevenson is still unbeaten. In Illinois, that is. The only two losses for the state’s best team have come at the hands of top-notch, out-of-state competition, teams that are ranked nationally. Just like the Patriots (16-2). Stevenson’s most-recent loss, and its most lopsided loss of the Jalen Brunson era, was last weekend in the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. The Patriots lost to Findlay College Prep out of Nevada, 84-58. Findlay College Prep is the No. 1-ranked team in the USA Today Top 25 national high school poll.

On Saturday, Basara hit a career-best in winning the all-around with a 38.20 and also had her best vault (9.87) at the Lake County meet held at Lake Forest High School.

  • Grayslake North takes aim against Washington foes Jan 15, 2015 10:47 PM
Although there’s no scientific data as proof, there does seem to be anecdotal evidence that high school basketball in each area of Illinois is styled a bit differently. Just ask the Grayslake North boys basketball team. The Knights are preparing to return to downstate Washington High School this weekend as part of the annual Martin Luther King tournament there that they participated in last year. They are ready for what they weren’t quite ready for last time. “We couldn’t believe the shooting we saw there,” Grayslake North coach Todd Grunloh said. “It’s not like it is up here. Literally any kid who checks into the game down there can shoot from two to three feet outside the 3-point line and with great form."

He gets down — he’s a freshman — but he’s willing to fight. He’ll battle for you.”

With the score tied 34-34 midway through the fourth quarter, Lake Zurich scored 12 unanswered points to finish the game. In the final 13 minutes of the game, the visitors held the Mustangs to just 4 points. “We know that when we can play defense, we win games,” said Bennett, whose Bears improved to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in the NSC Lake. “We did a great job on defense the last quarter and a half.”

  • Libertyville gets it done against Mundelein Jan 9, 2015 11:39 PM
Considering his “play every minute like it’s your last” mentality, Ben Kimpler absolutely, positively was going to try to dunk the basketball when he got an uncontested chance in the fourth quarter. He did. Barely. Never mind that late in the third quarter the athletic 6-foot-6 junior rolled his right ankle leaping for an offensive rebound against Mundelein’s pesky Mustangs. “That was the weakest thing I ever tried to put down,” Kimpler said with a laugh of his dunk. “I tried jumping off with my right foot and (the ankle) just gave out.” Libertyville wasn’t fretting about style points after its 68-51 home win Friday night. The North Suburban Lake victory evened the Wildcats’ record at 7-7 (2-3 division), while dropping Mundelein to 1-14, 0-6. Libertyville was happy to leave its gym with a win after committing 21 turnovers.

After getting postponed against Warren on Thursday night, visiting Mundelein and Vernon Hills squared off in a rare North Suburban Conference wrestling dual meet to open the 2015 part of their season Friday night. Starting the meet at 145 pounds, the Mustangs kept it close with the Cougars in a 12-12 deadlock after four matches. But Vernon Hills (13-7) took command of the meet after that point with its upper weights really doing some damage en route to an impressive 52-24 NSC crossover victory over Mundelein (5-10).
