  • This time, Lake Forest meets Mundelein’s challenge Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Mundelein girls basketball coach Brian Evans knew his team faced a scary scenario similar to what the boys team just experienced Friday night. Evans watched as Libertyville avenged a 36-point loss against the Mustangs' boys. Now his 16th-seeded team was opening Class 4A regional play at home against an 18th-seeded Lake Forest team it beat by 28 points three weeks ago. But Lake Forest (8-21) avenged that loss and another early in the season by 2 points by holding on for 36-33 quarterfinal victory Monday night.

  • Z-B tops undermanned Mundelein Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Quinn Pokora wanted to give Mundelein an energy boost as he came off the bench for the first time all season a couple of minutes into Saturday’s North Suburban Lake boys basketball game with visiting Zion-Benton. The senior guard’s four 3-pointers and 14 first-quarter points were exactly the jolt the Mustangs needed a night after a disappointing loss at Libertyville. What the Mustangs didn’t need was Pokora taking his game-high 23 points and five 3s to the bench to stay with 2:18 to play when he fouled out. Especially with leads of 17 points in the second quarter and 15 with 1:08 left in the third were about to be sliced to one.And Pokora was powerless to do anything as Zion completed its second big comeback of the weekend with a 78-73 victory.

Matt Reed kept using the word “special.” Libertyville’s junior guard had just shot a crazy 8 of 8 from the floor, sinking five 3-pointers and scoring a career-high 25 points to help his Wildcats stun visiting Mundelein 87-80 in a North Suburban Lake Division thriller Friday night.

Every team needs role players, but they become even more important as the regular season morphs into the postseason. They can provide that extra lift that can make or break a playoff run. Two juniors who are already playing big roles for their teams are guard Nate Williams at Mundelein and forward Mateusz Lopez at Round Lake.

After standing still 6 months, time starts to move for Mundelein's KnarJan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Four seconds. That was Robert Knar's latest victory. His life, for the last six months, has been measured in similarly small increments. "It's the small victories that keep you going," Knar said. "Those are what I've been living for lately." Weeks ago, when Knar bent his knee again for the first time in what seemed like an eternity, it was a victory. A small victory, but a victory nonetheless for the Mundelein senior guard.

But the Wildcats turned the tables in the semifinal round to win 223.5 to 211.5 over Grant. The victory marked the fourth NSC crown in five years for Libertyville, and its 19th overall. • Wow: Warren wins as Mustangs’ Knar returns Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
The loudest ovation in Warren's gym soon gave way to a louder one, complete with the hero being mobbed after the buzzer by his teammates. Sorry, Robert Knar. Aarias Austin stole the heroics Saturday night. Austin's pullup 3-pointer to beat the buzzer gave Warren a 63-60 win over Mundelein in a North Suburban Conference Lake Division thriller, spoiling the shocking season debut of Knar. While Mundelein (12-9, 5-3) saw its four-game winning streak snapped, the win was the perfect pick-me-up for Warren (12-9, 4-5), which four nights earlier suffered an embarrassing, 32-point loss to Stevenson.
