  • Lodico, Lake Zurich pull away from Mundelein Sep 20, 2014 2:11 PM
    Both football teams had reasons to smile at halftime Friday night. Underdog Mundelein held home-standing Lake Zurich to a pair of Ben Klett touchdowns and felt right in the game at the break. The Bears, losers of two straight, were glad to be up a pair of scores in the North Suburban Lake Division game. In fact, coach George Kaider had his Mustangs in position to win their first game and be homecoming spoilers. “It was much closer than the score showed,” Kaider said. “They had one breakaway play and our fumble. I didn’t think they had an answer for our option play. It was very close at halftime.” Lake Zurich owned the second half, however. The Bears handed he ball to senior Zane Lodico and his 2 third-quarter touchdown runs paved the way to a 35-8 victory.

     
  • Wheeling’s a winner at Warren Sep 20, 2014 5:53 PM
    There was quite a bit of uncertainty between the Warren and Wheeling boys cross country teams following the Warren Invitational Saturday morning. Everybody knew the finish was too close to call between the Blue Devils and the Wildcats in the 20-team meet on the 2.95-mile course at Warren High School. But when all was said and done, Wheeling had pulled off an exciting 56-59 victory over heartbroken Warren as the Wildcats continued so show great signs of improvement and growth in the early stages of the new season.

    Mundelein Invite: At its own invitational Saturday, Mundelein gave the home fans something to cheer about. The Mustangs (354) finished second in the nine-team field, just behind champion Buffalo Grove (337). Jennifer Dimitriou and Grace Gotlund tied for Mundelein’s best score with an 88. Meanwhile, Grant finished seventh with a 421 and Lakes finished ninth (481). Brianna Burgeson was Grant’s top finisher with a 95 and Taylor Chisolm had a team-best 112 for Lakes. Rockford Guilford Invite: Stevenson took fifth at the Rockford Guilford Invite as Alexia Fidman finished with a team-best 82.

     
  • Patient Park putts proficiently for Vernon Hills Sep 20, 2014 10:54 PM
    Justin Park had a long time to think about a long putt. The Vernon Hills sophomore refused to wear a long face, however. As he made the long walk back to the clubhouse when a rainstorm interrupted Mundelein’s invitational at Steeple Chase Golf Club on Saturday, instead of frowning, Park focused. He had lagged his putt 10 feet short on the hole on the par-4 13th when the rain came.

    Brett Parola fired an even-par 36 to capture medalist honors, and Mundelein’s boys golf team carded a 154 to edge visiting Stevenson (161) in a North Suburban Lake Division showdown at Steeple Chase Golf Club on Thursday.

     
  • Plenty of highlights in the McNamara home Sep 18, 2014 8:53 PM
    Although Bill McNamara missed the “big game” in person, he found it just as much fun to watch on tape. McNamara is the head football coach at Stevenson. His team was busy playing a game against Warren last week at the same time his son Connor, the starting quarterback at Vernon Hills, was taking on North Chicago. The younger McNamara wound up taking part in a school-record 7 touchdowns in a 64-28 win. He rushed for 6 scores and threw for another.

    Grace Schofield’s big night helped lift Carmel Catholic’s girls volleyball team to a thrilling, three-set victory Wednesday. Schofield pounded 15 kills and served 6 aces, as the Corsairs rallied to beat host Glenbrook North 20-25, 25-19, 25-19 in nonconference action. Carmel (9-1) also got 7 kills and 16 assists from Morgan Meade, 4 kills and 13 assists from Grace Butler and 25 digs from Sierra Kepski. Taylor Luhr contributed 6 blocks, and Cate Halverson chipped in 3 kills for the Corsairs. Lake Forest d. Mundelein: The Scouts won 25-21, 25-14 to improve to 5-6 and 2-1 in the North Suburban Lake Division. Lake Forest was led by the setting of sophomore Ashley Amos (42 of 45, 23 assists, 1 kill, 1 ace, 3 service points), junior Emma Butler (8 kills), senior Jenna Dethlefsen (8 kills), sophomore Ashley Williams (7 kills, 1 ace, 5 service points) and the overall play of defensive specialist Mari Danneker (2.25 serve receive average on a 3 point scale, 1 ace and 10 total service points). Wauconda d. Antioch: Sara Sexton slammed 9 kills, LeAnne Sakowicz tallied 8 kills, 12 assists, 4 digs and 2 aces, and the Bulldogs won 25-22, 25-20 in North Suburban Prairie play. Wauconda (12-4, 2-0) also received 2 aces and 6 digs from Ashley Anderson. Stevenson d. Warren: The Patriots rallied for a 13-25, 25-23, 25-22 win in North Suburban Lake action. “Both teams battled pretty much point to point,” Warren coach Julie Filippo said. Warren (10-5, 2-1) was paced by Jenna Walczak (10 kills 7 digs), Kim Hengesh (7 kills, 3 blocks), Lauren Frericks (6 kills, 48-of-49 setting, 10 assists), Nicole Berzin (40-of-44 setting, 16 assists) and Lindsey Biedron (4 kills, 9 digs). Vernon Hills d. North Chicago: The Cougars cruised in the North Suburban Prairie match, winning 25-3, 25-5.

    Mundelein’s boys golf team is on a roll. And John Lentz was rolling in the putts Tuesday, as his 2-under-par 34 led the Mustangs to an impressive 145 at Pine Meadow Golf Club. The performance was good for a 14-stroke victory over Libertyville (159).

    Iven Hernandez scored two more goals, and Antioch’s boys soccer team won again in North Suburban Conference Prairie Division action Tuesday. The Sequoits’ 3-1 victory over visiting Wauconda at McMillen Field improved their record to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the NSC Prairie.

    The depth of Barrington’s boys golf team showed as the host team took top honors in the Ivanhoe Golf Classic on Monday. Cole Kempinski and Kevin Altenberger had the second-best rounds of the day at 76, with teammates Tim Lim (77), Burke Barsamian (78), Tom Calbi (80) and Joey Batliner (82) close behind.

    Warren’s boys soccer team built a big lead and then held on to edge visiting Oswego East 3-2 in a nonconference match Saturday. Goals by Nick Haas, Chris Travis (penalty kick) and Ronaldo Garza had the Blue Devils up 3-0 at halftime. Kevin Penarrita and Richie Flores had assists, as Warren improved to 7-1-3. Grayslake North 3, Antioch 2: The Knights rallied from a two-goal deficit at halftime to win the nonconference match. “Our boys showed a lot of character and composure,” coach Adam DeCaluwe said after his Knights improved to 6-4. “In the opening 10-15 minutes, we had a ton of energy and we were dictating a lot of the play. Antioch started to get some more control of things and put us under pressure from a couple scoring chances they created.” Iven Hernandez’s pair of goals had Antioch up 2-0. Sophomore Grant Nickolson scored the Knights’ first after he got the ball from senior Lucas Buckels. Buckels flicked in the tying goal, which hit an Antioch defender and found the back of the net. Senior Fernando Sanchez earned a penalty kick for Grayslake North, and senior Zach Kottmer converted for the game-winning goal. “We responded very well after halftime and found ourselves creating quality chances,” DeCaluwe said, “and playing a majority of the second half in Antioch’s half of the field.” Crystal Lake Central 1, Wauconda 0: The host Tigers scored in the second half of the nonconference game. Shane Purcell had 6 saves in net for Wauconda (3-6). Lakes 2, Grant 1: On Friday, Cesar Murua banged in the rebound of a Sean O’Brien shot with 45 seconds left to lift the visiting Eagles to the North Suburban Prairie win. Murua also scored the first goal for Lakes (2-4-2, 1-0-1) with Stephen Mogged earning the assist. Eagles keeper Jack Monson made 6 saves. The game was scoreless at halftime.

    “There’s No Place Like Homecoming” is this year’s theme for Mundelein High School’s homecoming. The school held its annual parade Friday, stepping off from Hawley Street and Prospect Avenue.

     
  • Zion-Benton denies Mundelein Sep 13, 2014 12:42 AM
    Mundelein’s football team looked like it was going to win its first game of the season. It didn’t end well for the host Mustangs, however. Zion-Benton scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to win 20-14 in a North Suburban Lake Division opener Friday night.

    For the second time in three days, Grayslake Central’s boys golf team pulled out a close decision. Kyle Reynolds and Josh Schneider each fired a 42, and the Rams carded a 172 for a three-stroke win over Cary-Grove at Stonewall Orchard Golf Club on Thursday. Michael Murdy and Tommy Triggs added a 43 and 45, respectively, for Grayslake Central. On Tuesday at Stonewall Orchard, the Rams’ 167 bettered Huntley by one shot. Reynolds had a 40, while the winners also counted Cooper Brunk’s 41 and 43s by freshman Michael Sisk and Triggs. Mundelein d. Zion-Benton: At Steeple Chase, Ryan Magee fired a 1-under-par 35 for the host Mustangs (153), who won the North Suburban Lake match by 29 strokes. John Lentz (38) and Jeff Lee (39) also broke 40 for Mundelein. Brett Parola and Zach Zentz carded matching 41s for the Mustangs. Lake Forest d. Warren: At Bittersweet, Jack Garrity and Quinn Gaughan each shot a 37, as the visiting Scouts (156) downed the Blue Devils (169) in North Suburban Lake action. Jack Hansen’s 39 paced Warren. Lakes d. Grant: At Fox Lake Country Club, the North Suburban Prairie match went to the Eagles (187), who also boasted the medalist thanks to Mike Barry’s 40. Michael Maye shot a 51 for Grant (213).

    After nine road games to open the season, Warren’s boys soccer team finally had its home opener Thursday. It was worth the wait for the Blue Devils, who edged Mundelein 2-1 in North Suburban Lake Division action.

    Girls golf Warren d. Lake Zurich: At Bittersweet, the host Blue Devils scored a 205-242 win in North Suburban Conference action. Erica Price led Warren with a 44, while Lake Zurich’s Aine Mattera was the medalist with a 37. Mundelein d. Vernon Hills: At Countryside, rain shortened the North Suburban match to six holes. The Mustangs’ score of 132 was good for a seven-stroke win over the Cougars. Megan Weise had a 31 for Mundelein, while Vernon Hills’ Kari Lee shot a 30.

    Mundelein made some big plays Friday night. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, too many of them benefited visiting Highland Park.
