  • Westminster Christian tops Mooseheart Sep 6, 2014 11:09 PM
    So far in the early existence of its program Westminster Christian has been trying to compete almost solely with an advanced passing attack. The result has been only two wins, which both came last year. On Saturday, however, the Warriors took a big step in becoming a more complete team. Not only did they win 13-12 at Mooseheart, but they did so with a running game and defense.

    On Sunday, Kaneland graduated a slew of athletes who led the Knights to second place in Class 2A at the Boys Track and Field State Finals in Charleston. They’ll also return key members who in 2015 will try to prevent Cahokia from winning a boys record fifth straight state championship.

Secondly, as a family teacher at Mooseheart Child City and School, putting the food on the table and providing a warm family atmosphere is her job. And she takes her job very seriously.

  • Mooseheart caps emotional journey with state title Mar 15, 2014 6:34 PM
    Many roads came to an end on Saturday when Mooseheart lifted the Class 1A state championship trophy. For the Ramblers boys basketball team, the 63-47 victory over Heyworth ended a journey that started in November, not far from Peoria, at the Canton Thanksgiving tournament. The team’s pathway ended with a 29-3 record.

    Mooseheart’s historic boys basketball season is going to end on the largest stage possible. The Ramblers used a strong second half to defeat Unity 74-61 on Friday at Peoria Carver Arena and move into Saturday’s IHSA Class 1A state championship game. Mooseheart sits 32 minutes from the school’s first team title.

    In the trophy cases at Mooseheart’s stadium-fieldhouse complex, there are a number of plaques, cups and assorted trophies from various successes over the school’s athletic history. What you will not find is a team trophy from IHSA competition. Staff will have to clear space for such a prize, as the Ramblers head this weekend to the IHSA Class 1A boys basketball finals. They earned that trip thanks to a wire-to-wire, 59-41 Tuesday victory over Eastland at the NIU Convocation Center.

    The 28th annual Bridge Breaking contest, one of the longest-running traditions at Moosheart, took place Friday. As with the previous 27 contests, this year’s was under the direction of physics teacher Curt Schlinkmann, who is in his 40th year at Mooseheart.

    Short-handed Westminster Christian stayed with much taller Mooseheart until a halftime adjustment unleashed the unique abilities of 6-foot-10 senior Makur Puou in a 62-42 Northeastern Athletic Conference boys basketball victory for the Red Ramblers in Elgin Thursday.

     
  • Judge seals Mooseheart pedophile case file, closes court hearings Dec 3, 2013 1:57 AM
    A Kane County judge has made private the court file and proceedings of a man convicted of abusing boys at Mooseheart in the 1990s, while state officials are trying to have him committed as a sexually violent person. The attorney for Chad Wahl, 44, said state law allows mental health matters to be held in private. Wahl was sentenced to 21 years in prison for abusing six boys while he worked as a "house parent" at Mooseheart.

     
  • Hampshire claims tournament crown Nov 23, 2013 7:30 PM
    The Hampshire girls basketball team started slowly and didn’t shoot well throughout the game Saturday afternoon. But the Whip-Purs stepped up their defense and dominated the boards to beat Willows Academy, 52-37, in the championship game of the Elgin Academy Thanksgiving Tournament.

     
  • Prosecutors want pedophile committed after release Nov 14, 2013 1:12 PM
    The attorney general's office wants a man who was convicted of sexually assaulting and abusing six boys at Mooseheart in the early 1990s committed as a sexually violent person to a state facility. Chad Wahl, now 44, was set to get out of prison on Friday, but has been transferred to a state detention center until a Nov. 26 probable cause hearing. Wahl was sentenced to 21 years in prison for his crimes.
