    St. Francis handles Montini; rematch with Neuqua Valley set May 21, 2012 12:00 AM
    In Monday's regional opener, host St. Francis took care of business against Montini, but then still had a little more to do on the volleyball court before calling it a night. The Spartans made quick work of a young Montini squad 25-12, 25-8 to advance to Tuesday's semifinal in Wheaton against Neuqua Valley, the No. 8 seed in the Wheaton Warrenville Sectional. But No. 10 St. Francis (24-12) stuck around for a good 20 minutes afterward to prepare for a Neuqua Valley squad which has beaten it twice this spring in tight matches.

    Evidently, St. Francis was in no mood for a dramatic finish in its rematch with Montini. Two weeks after losing on a walk-off homer, the Spartans scored 7 runs in the first inning and Maggie Remus threw a no-hitter, as St. Francis rolled 12-0 in five innings in Wheaton.

    St. Francis scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Marmion 13-12 Tuesday in Suburban Christian Conference baseball in Wheaton. Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning, and Marmion went ahead again by a run in the top of the ninth. The game-winning run scored on Andrew Brundages suicide squeeze bunt, scoring Mike Kiwatkowski with one out for St. Francis (12-10, 6-5).

    One dramatic homer apparently deserved another Friday in Lombard. Montinis Sara Ross was more than happy to do the honors. After St. Francis Aly Germanos tied the game with a 3-run homer in the top of the seventh, Ross answered with a walkoff shot leading off the bottom half, giving the Broncos a thrilling 7-6 win.

    Johnson transferring to Wisconsin Apr 13, 2012 12:00 AM
    Twin tugs of playing time and family were too strong for Michala Johnson to pass up. Its landed her at Wisconsin. The former Montini basketball star, who earlier in the week it was reported was leaving Connecticut, confirmed Friday that she will be transferring to Wisconsin. Johnson, four-time Daily Herald all-area at Montini, must sit out next season but will have two years of eligibility remaining starting with the 2013-14 season.

    Former Montini star Johnson leaving UConn Apr 11, 2012 12:00 AM
    Former Montini girls basketball star Michala Johnson is leaving Connecticut. Montini coach Jason Nichols confirmed the departure of Johnson, a sophomore forward. ESPN.com reported that Johnson will be transferring to Wisconsin, but Nichols said that is not confirmed and that Johnson is also looking at Illinois, Northwestern and Michigan State.

    Erin Hohman went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 runs batted in, Shannon Hohman (1-1) struck out seven and Waubonsie Valley (2-2) rode a 3-run first inning to a 5-2 nonconference softball road win at Plainfield Central on Monday.

    In a Benet lineup already featuring two Division I commits and two sophomores being recruited heavily, freshmen Stephanie Abello and Emily York have opened eyes. Abello, batting fifth and playing left field, is hitting .516 with a team-high 5 homers and 19 runs batted in; first baseman York, hitting behind her, is batting .531 with 3 homers and 23 RBI, tied for the team-best with Bradley-bound Kendall Duffy. As a team, 8-1 Benet is hitting .476 and averaging over 12 runs.
