  • Second straight setback for Montini Dec 30, 2014 10:29 PM
Losses don’t happen very often to the Montini girls basketball program. Consecutive losses never occur, even against strong competition. The Broncos certainly had their chances to pull out Tuesday’s third-place game of the sixth annual Montini Christmas Tournament, but instead the defending Class 3A state champions suffered the sting of a 60-55 overtime loss to Marian Catholic. Coupled with Monday’s 58-42 semifinal loss to Benet, it’s the first time Montini (13-3) has lost back-to-back games since 2004. Marian Catholic (12-2) was third in Class 4A last year after winning the 2012 4A state title.

  • Benet comes up big against Montini Dec 29, 2014 10:13 PM
Knowing just how good the opposition was, Benet Academy coach Joe Kilbride said Monday night’s showdown with Montini Catholic felt like it went down to the wire. But in reality, the unbeaten Redwings played one of their best games in a long time while knocking off the 16-2 Broncos 58-42 in the semifinals of the Montini Christmas Tournament in Lombard. The Redwings led 41-31 after three quarters even while Emily Eshoo was limited to just 2 points through 24 minutes due to foul trouble. A strong team effort, however, proved to be more than enough to advance the Redwings (16-0) into Tuesday’s championship game against either Marian Catholic or Trinity.

  • Who’s No. 1? Montini makes its case Dec 6, 2014 10:29 PM
Montini’s girls basketball team is not one that needs a confidence booster. But the Broncos sure got one Saturday. Trailing defending Class 4A champion and top-ranked Whitney Young by 7 points late in the third quarter, Montini, the defending Class 3A champion and top-ranked 3A team, stormed back to beat the Dolphins 49-45 in the Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin.

  • Aurora Central shoots Montini into submission Dec 3, 2014 9:06 PM
Montini opened up its boys basketball season by taking the first lead of the game against Aurora Central Catholic. But it would be the only deficit the Chargers would face as Brett Czerak drained a 3-pointer on the ensuing trip. The work ‘harbinger’ is perhaps most apt to describe what transpired over the next three-plus quarters at the Burney Wilkie Classic, hosted by Aurora Christian. ACC drained 16 3-pointers during the course of its 81-45 blowout win Wednesday night in Aurora.

  • Montini's Andriano doesn’t sound like the retiring type Dec 1, 2014 1:03 PM

The Cyclones won their second straight title and the program’s fifth under coach Ken Leonard.
