    Only the weather could put the brakes on the biggest softball series this season in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division. Although lightning delayed and then put an end to Monday’s St. Francis at Montini rematch, it was an official game and the first-place Broncos won 7-3 to take a two-game lead over the Spartans in the SCC Blue race and clinched at least a share of the league crown.

    Montini took a huge step toward finally dethroning St. Francis atop the Suburban Christian Conference softball world, but another step looms just around the corner. With Lauren Trojnar firing a 6-hit shutout Thursday in a 4-0 win at St. Francis, the Broncos improved to 12-0 in the SCC Blue while dropping the Spartans, who have won at least a share of the league crown five years running, to 10-1. The two schools will square off again Monday in Lombard in another SCC showdown.

    Abby Hammer was in the same spot as she found herself a year ago: putting the finishing touches on a girls track and field conference championship. The Rosary senior anchored the Royals’ 1,600-meter relay team to a come-from-behind win over Montini to give the squad its fifth championship of the day in Palos Heights on Wednesday afternoon. With 171 points, 41 more than runner-up Montini, Rosary captured the final Suburban Christian Conference championship for a second year in a row.

    The biggest race of the night was against the weather. With nasty weather in the forecast for later in the evening, the Rocket Relays at Burlington Central were themselves a race against the clock. By the time Larkin nipped the host Rockets at the wire in a thrilling finish to the boys’ 1,600-meter relay, a steady rain was falling. Even better for Central, both its boys and girls teams won handily. The boys team won the 9-team event with 184 points, easily beating DeKalb, which finished second with 158.5. Batavia was third with 108.5.
