    It takes more than a good half of girls basketball to throw a scare into Montini. “It’s happened a lot,” Montini senior Kateri Stone said. “I think because we’re seniors now it helps that we’ve been in this situation before. So it’s our responsibility to keep everyone calm and then slowly turn the game around.” Nazareth’s good first half at the Class 3A Glenbard South sectional semifinals only served to remind the top-seeded Broncos they can’t take anyone for granted. The Broncos’ strong second half gave them a 70-44 victory Tuesday night in Glen Ellyn.

    Montini win worth the tripFeb 25, 2014 12:00 AM
    Imagine for a moment the two bus rides. For Chicago Westinghouse it measured 54 miles one way to Antioch High School. So that gave that team plenty of time to reflect on its mission. Simply knock out that team from Lombard and earn a trip to Bloomington for the team wrestling state meet.

    When Montini and St. Edward played in December, the Broncos won 39-38 in Lombard. When they met again Tuesday, the Green Wave surpassed 38 points early in the third quarter. Of course, it helped that the clock was stopped quite a bit. The Wave made 24 free throws on the way to an 80-65 Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division win in Elgin

    Kelly Karlis loves to play defense. At 6-foot-2 and with long arms, the Montini senior got the kind of length to cause opposing girls basketball offenses lots of trouble. “I usually try to do my best on defense because I’ve always been passionate about it my whole life,” Karlis said. “Length definitely does help, especially against smaller teams like this, especially having two of their taller, better players out.” With 9 blocked shots and several deflected passes, Karlis was a force defensively for the Broncos in their 75-48 nonconference victory against visiting Hinsdale Central on Saturday night.

    Montini coach Brian Opoka knew his Broncos could feel like Daniel in the lions’ den playing a senior-laden Marmion squad on the Cadets’ Senior Night Tuesday in Aurora. Opoka’s worst fears were realized right after the opening tip. After honoring their seven seniors before the game, the fired-up Cadets roared ahead 17-3 thanks to 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.

    Dozens of cheerleading squads from across the suburbs competed in IHSA Sectional tournaments Sunday, trying to qualify to a trip to the State Final in Bloomington. “I'm amazed at how tough and skilled these kids are now,” said on spectator.

On Friday night in Lombard, that something was the Whitney Young defense. “That can’t happen,” Broncos coach Jason Nichols said after his team’s worst 3-point shooting game of the season. “We had some open looks. You’ve got to hit one or two of those. But that’s what happens in big-time games.” Limited to a pair of Kelly Karlis 3-pointers on 12 team attempts, Montini (23-2), ranked first in Class 3A, fell 54-45 to the second-ranked team in Class 4A.
