    West Aurora had a string of seven consecutive boys basketball championships, beginning with its state-championship team of 2000. But the storied program has not been atop the DuPage Valley Conference standings since 2006. With its sterling second-half against visiting Wheaton North on Saturday night in Aurora, the Blackhawks hit the Falcons with a 16-2 third-quarter run and turned on the afterburners by converting its last 11 field-goal attempts. The Blackhawks’ 67-48 triumph — reversing a 7-point halftime deficit — left them 10-3 overall and 5-0 in league play.

    Burlington Central left no doubt this time. The Rockets used an 18-2 run spanning the first and second quarters to break the game wide open and defeat Kaneland, 54-33, in nonconference girls basketball action on Pack the Place night in Burlington Saturday.

    Saturday’s nonconference meeting between the boys basketball teams from visiting Kaneland and Burlington Central on Pack the Place Night figured to be a close one.The Knights were coming off a thrilling 1-point victory a day earlier against Morris, a team that defeated Burlington Central by 7 points two weeks ago at the Plano Christmas Tournament. However, the Rockets turned it into a one-sided affair. Central shot 7 of 10 from 3-point range and 25 of 49 overall, won the rebounding battle 27-14, turned the ball over only 9 times and held Kaneland top scorers John Pruett and Tyler Carlson to 19 combined points in a 67-43 win.

    Coming into Saturday’s game at 12-3 and 3-0 in the DuPage Valley Conference, West Aurora isn’t going to sneak up on anybody anymore. Wheaton North certainly was ready. Chrissy Baird opened the scoring with a 3-pointer just nine seconds into the game. By the 6:17 mark West Aurora coach Connie Siljendahl had burned her first timeout, her team down 8-0 and on its way to a 70-46 loss.
