    The West Aurora school board chose a replacement Monday for Superintendent Jim Rydland, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Jeffrey Craig, who used to be the principal at Oswego East High School, will start a transition to the district this week.

    Wheaton Warrenville South scored 24 points in each half Tuesday night West Aurora. The host Blackhawks weren’t nearly as consistent. After a sluggish first half that sent them to their locker room trailing the DuPage Valley Conference matchup 24-21, the Blackhawks exploded for 47 points in the second half on their way to their eighth straight win, 68-48.

    Aurora area high school seniors and their parents can receive assistance in filling out the standard college financial aid application known as FAFSA from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5. It stands for “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” because it is filed with the U.S. Department of Education, but most state-sponsored and college-sponsored aid requires the same application.

     
  • Powerful Glenbard North prevails whatever the weather Feb 3, 2014 3:21 PM
    The latest conference coronation for the Glenbard North wrestling team simply had to wait a day. “We almost didn’t have a conference tournament,” Glenbard North coach Mark Hahn joked after the Panthers crowned six champions and placed five other competitors in the top three. “We had that really, really bad blizzard — two inches.” Glenbard North added to its storied legacy with its 16th consecutive DuPage Valley Conference championship Sunday afternoon in Naperville. The Panthers’ 269 tournament points — augmented by its flawless regular-season dual record — easily outdistanced Glenbard East and Wheaton North, who were tied with 178.5 points. Lake Park, Naperville North and Wheaton Warrenville South had a champion each in placing fourth through sixth.

Among the cancellations announced Friday afternoon were the IHSA cheerleading sectional competitions, which have been moved to the same time Sunday in Grayslake and Rolling Meadows.

  • Kaneland’s Johnson returns to St. Edward a winner Feb 1, 2014 4:23 PM
    The St. Edward boys basketball program’s past met its present in Elgin Friday. Kaneland coach Brian Johnson — a 1997 St. Edward graduate who played on the last two Green Wave squads to win sectional titles — returned to his alma mater for a nonconference meeting twice postponed for weather-related reasons. Supported in the stands by approximately 10 former teammates as well as former St. Edward coach Kevin Dix, now an assistant coach at Lewis University, Johnson’s Knights pulled away from the Green Wave late in the third quarter of a 65-55 victory.

  • Kaneland’s Diddell wins conference in powerful fashion Jan 29, 2014 4:29 PM
    Kaneland finished in the middle the Northern Illinois Big XII Conference tournament last weekend at Sterling. “Nothing earth-shattering,” said Kaneland coach Monty Jahns, who is retiring at the conclusion of the season. “I think we wrestled where we thought we would as a team.” Longtime conference rival Yorkville won the tournament, with the Knights finishing in sixth place in the 12-school field. But the Knights did have the satisfaction of crowning at least one champion as senior Justin Diddell had nothing but falls in storming to the heavyweight title.

    It was only fitting West Aurora honored Neal Ormond Saturday night. The iconic local play-by-play broadcaster, who has spent the last 50 years calling West Aurora boys basketball games, described an all-time first. Jontrell Walker scored 28 points to lead three West Aurora players in double figures as the Blackhawks continued their torrid shooting against archrival East Aurora.

    Friday night’s 60-53 win by West Aurora over host Lake Park was the tale of two teams. It was about the Blackhawks, who were experienced enough to know how to dig their way out of a 10-point deficit in the third quarter.
