  • Griffin: Some residents taxed twice for sheriff patrols Oct 22, 2014 4:59 AM
Taxpayers from unincorporated areas in four DuPage County townships are spending an extra $530,648 this year to pay for special sheriff's patrols. While voters approved paying for the special patrols more than two decades ago, some are questioning it since those costs will balloon over the next four years.

  • Donations pour into Milton Township food pantry Oct 3, 2014 3:48 PM
Milton Township Supervisor Chris Heidorn says he was “praying and hoping for a miracle” last week to save the township food pantry. He got just the help he was looking for, thanks to readers of the Daily Herald. Township officials said Friday that donations of food and money have been pouring in since the newspaper reported on Sept. 26 that the Wheaton pantry was down its last $681.

  • Shelves nearly bare at Milton Township food pantry Sep 25, 2014 7:42 PM
The Milton Township food pantry is starved for cash. And unless there’s an influx of donations, the hundreds of people who rely on the Wheaton pantry may have to look elsewhere to feed themselves and their families. “We are totally broke,” Milton Township Supervisor Chris Heidorn said.

Milton Township Assessor Chris LeVan has been in his position for less than a month, but he already has fired seven employees, leaving people who worked in the office for years scrambling to find new jobs. LeVan says the previous assessor strained the budget. But former Assessor Bob Earl says, "This is a political firing."

  • Milton Township officials clash over 16.2 percent pay raises May 28, 2013 6:33 PM
Whether 16.2 percent pay raises given last month to six employees in the Milton Township assessor’s office represent a higher workload or a sweetheart deal depends on who you ask. Assessor Bob Earl, who is stepping down at the end of the year, insists the pay raises largely were the result of his decision to increase the number of hours the employees are working each week. But Township Supervisor O. Chris Heidorn is calling the situation “a parting shot at the (township) board or a last-ditch gift to favored employees by a lame duck, or both.”

  • Officials in 31 suburban townships get automatic raises Aug 29, 2012 1:58 PM
While most American workers have spent the past four years getting by with stagnating wages, or making even less than in years before, a segment of government employees is doing just fine. Elected officials in 31 suburban townships combined to make $661,387 more this year than they did in 2009. In many cases, they gave themselves the raises -- and they're getting ready to do it again.

  • Milton Twp. cleanup was top-notch Aug 14, 2012 4:21 AM
A Milton Township letter to the editor: After the fierce storm passed through DuPage County on July 1, it left a path of destruction. The unincorporated area I live in Milton Township was especially hit hard, downing many, many trees and branches. It had looked like a tornado had hit, but it was just the results of winds up to 90 mph.

  • Efforts of many made storm cleanup success Aug 7, 2012 4:24 AM
Efforts of many made storm cleanup success On July 1, Milton Township again suffered through a major microburst with winds around 117 miles per hour. The Milton Township Highway Department crews were dispatched immediately after the storm passed to clear township roads with heavy equipment so that emergency vehicles, etc. could have access to our residents. The “after the storm” cleanup is complete almost four weeks later even with the help from neighboring township highway departments, cities, villages, CERT volunteers and DuPage County Sheriff’s office SWAP. Again, I’d like to thank the residents of Milton Township for their patience and cooperation in this extreme event. Also, a big thank you to all the cooperating friends who assisted us with the storm clean up: DuPage County Sheriff’s office – SWAP; Downers Grove Township Highway Department; Lisle Township Highway Department; Naperville Township Highway Department; Lemont Township Highway Department; the village of Hinsdale; and the many volunteers with the Milton Township CERT program and our own Milton Township Highway Department crew, along with other municipalities, townships and DuPage County Highway Department, for getting all roads open in such an extreme weather event. The great spirit of cooperation and quick turn around after so much damage is a good indicator that Milton Township is a community that works. Thank you all. Gary Muehlfelt Highway Commissioner Milton Township
