    Senior Night is always special and emotional. Thursday night was a little more of both for Streamwood’s Hannah McGlone. McGlone’s father, Greg, was in the stands for the first time since the last week of January following a recent stay in a hospital. He got to see McGlone play her final game at Streamwood, a 55-46 victory over Metea Valley in an Upstate Eight Conference girls basketball crossover game.

    A handful of boys basketball teams can make an argument for being the best in the Class 4A East Aurora sectional. There’s no debating the hottest team. Naperville Central solidified that honor with last week’s 57-56 DuPage Valley Conference victory at West Aurora, a win sealed by Ryan Antony’s late 3-pointer. If the Redhawks (17-5) beat Wheaton Warrenville South on Friday, they’ll be riding a nine-game winning streak into sectional seeding.

    While Metea Valley might not be a brand new high school anymore, there are plenty of firsts still for it to achieve especially athletically. One came Saturday as the boys swimming team won the school’s first-ever Upstate Eight Conference championship at the league meet held at St. Charles North.

    Marmion dominates regional Feb 8, 2014 12:00 AM
    Moving up a class for the state wrestling tournaments has been a godsend for Marmion. The defending Class 3A team runners-up, the Cadets were in a league of their own at the Waubonsie Valley individual regional Saturday afternoon in Aurora. Crowning all but one of their 11 championship finalists, the Cadets dominated the largely Aurora and Naperville field by almost 140 points. Waubonsie Valley and Wheaton Warrenville South combined for 13 qualifiers to the Hinsdale Central sectional next week in placing a distant second and third, respectively.

    The many local teams that journeyed to Bloomington Friday with high hopes in the state cheerleading competition were whittled to a smaller number of finalists in a long day of competition at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. Preliminary results are in for all four divisions, and the competition will resume Saturday morning at 11.

    Realizing that Metea Valley was bringing a five-game winning streak by an average of 5 points per game while averaging 70 points a contest into Friday’s contest at Hinsdale Central, Red Devils coach Nick Latorre knew that a key for his team was not allowing the Mustangs to be in a position where they could tap into the confidence they had built up by winning tight games.

    Gymnastics regionals can bring tears of joy and of sorry.Hit your routines and finish in the top five in an event and you qualify for sectionals individually and perhaps also help your team do so. Wobble too much or fall and you might be left wondering, “What could have been?” Naperville North doesn’t have to answer that question, nor did the Huskies shed any tears after they won Wednesday’s Naperville North regional with 138.3 points, finishing comfortably ahead of runner-up Oswego co-op’s 133.975.

    A perfect final round led to a perfect ending for St. Charles East on Saturday afternoon. Ryan Valesh and Isaiah Vela inspired five consecutive championships beginning at 132 pounds, and along with Anthony Rubino’s crown at 113 to start things off, the Saints won all six of their finals to lift the Upstate Eight Conference trophy for a second straight year.

    Trailing by 5 points in overtime, the Metea Valley boys basketball team got a huge boost from Marquell Oliver in the Mustangs’ rematch against South Elgin. The Mustangs, who won the first game between the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division teams, got 12 points from Oliver in the extra period to earn a 68-64 win on Friday night in South Elgin. Metea Valley (12-8, 4-4) has now won 4 of its last 5 games, and Oliver finished with a game-high 24 points.
