    Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program recently announced it will award nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes to more than 2,500 students who have made a positive impact on their communities. Nominations for kids, age 6 to 18, will be accepted Jan. 30 to March 13 at kohlskids.com. “Children around the country are doing inspiring work in their communities every day and Kohl's is proud to reward these future leaders through the Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program,” said Bevin Bailis.

    High school students can learn more about the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at “Explore ACES” on March 13-14. This student-run event introduces both prospective and admitted students to ACES faculty, academic offerings, and student organizations. More than 100 exhibits showcase academics, research, and student development opportunities. Students can also learn about study-abroad programs, how ACES graduates are using their degrees, and tips on applying for more than $2.5 million in scholarships within the College of ACES.

    Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois is offering “Frosty Frolic” to all local families who want to experience winter camping together. Families, couples, and small groups are invited to bundle up and explore Mary Ann Beebe Center in Harvard from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. Activities will include sledding, cross country skiing, and snowman building. Cost is $10 per youth or $5 per adult. Registration is open and ends Monday, Feb. 9.

    Two men who police say attempted to break into a safe at a Barrington church Sunday have been charged with felony burglary to a place of worship. Barrington police officers responded to a call of a burglary about 4:20 p.m. Sunday at St. Anne Catholic Church, police said in a news release.

  • Lindo Theatre presents classic Cold War thriller “Fail Safe” Jan 20, 2015 6:03 PM
    The Cold War Film Series continues at the Lindo Theatre with the thriller “Fail Safe” (G-112 min) on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 1 and 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person, and tickets are on sale at the Lindo Theatre box office, located at 115 S. Chicago Ave. in downtown Freeport, or online at www.classiccinemas.com. A brief introduction before each movie and a discussion will follow the film presentation, led by Dr. Ed Finch and Alan Wenzel. The film takes place during the Cold War; U.S. bomber jets are equipped with fail-safe boxes that instruct pilots when and if to attack. When an attack order is inadvertently administered due to a system malfunction, the president played by renowned actor Henry Fonda must scramble to fix the mistake before the bombs are dropped on Moscow. He manages to stop almost all the bombers headed for Moscow, except for one determined pilot who manages to complete his mission, with deadly consequences. The film also stars Walter Matthau, Larry Hagman and Don DeLuise. The Cold War Film Series, which is co-sponsored by Highland Community College and the Stephenson County Museum, continues with “Dr. Strangelove” on March 4, “October Sky” on April 1, and concludes April 29 with a bonus movie, “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming.” Admission to the “Russians Are Coming …” film is $5 per person or complimentary to those who purchased tickets for the entire film series.
